That’s wonderful news Jeff. Send her my regards.Does anyone have any news about Charlie's surgery yet? My wife had her hip replaced on Monday and was home on Wednesday, doing great. Charlie's was a few days earlier, so I'd hoped we would have heard something by now.
I haven't heard anything Jeff, I tried sending Charlie a text a few days ago, but there was an issue with my network provider. Glad to hear your wife is doing wellDoes anyone have any news about Charlie's surgery yet? My wife had her hip replaced on Monday and was home on Wednesday, doing great. Interesting, and comforting, information, Tom. Thanks for sharing it here!Due to the almost complete disappearance of genuine Okapi knives from the websites of online retailers, and knowing that they have recently faced fierce competition from both cheap alternatives and outright counterfeits coming from <that Asian country which shall not be named>, some here have expressed worries that the company had gone out of business.
Rest easy, however! I have it on the firm authority of some unnamed guy from South Africa I never met (who says he buys Okapi knives every couple of months to resell on the big auction site), that the company is alive and well and still making knives in Durban.
I had tried to contact the company’s sales staff, but did not get a reply (though I did once in the past).
Anyway, I imagine it would be news in SA if such an iconic brand folded, and this guy would have heard about it, and it was very nice of him to answer my question so promptly.

Thanks Tom, that's really interesting
I am familiar with their website - that is how I got their email address. Sometimes websites stay up even after the business is closed, though.
While we are on the topic, check out this thread from a now defunct South African knife forum. I have posted the link before, but I think this is the type of thing that would interest you, Jack. The pictures have been degraded, but you can see them clearly enough still:
Okapi visit.
I figure this post belonged under Factory knives as we visited a knife factory. neels vd Berg and I went down yesterday to collect some of Stephan's 1070 (about 600kg worth) and we were given a tour of the knife factory. What a treat. Neels and I were grinning from ear to ear the whole way. This...www.sablade.com
Seeing how they are made makes it really easy to spot the fakes. I can’t imagine there is any practical way to recreate that handle construction in particular. Thanks Tom, that's really interesting![]()

I am a bit behind schedule, with my healing, but we are on the road now.
They kept me in the hospital a few extra days to sort some issues, but I'm feeling like I'm catching up - slowly.
Hard to sit here right now, but I'm on the path back!
Thanks for everyone's concerns.
I apologize for missing a lot of posts; It won't be too long. We've got a BF knife to wrap up!!
Later, folks!!
