"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Exact! My 45+ yo Barbour jacket has badly worn cuffs and I once brought it back to the shop to have them mended. The price asked was way too much in regard of the trouble wearing worn cuffs on a mc jacket every %!😡#!!! hipster tries to steal. As long as it is waterproof I'll go along with these cuffs! 😏
Sounds like a quality jacket Alain :) The hem on the Barbour I bought the other year started fraying almost as soon as I got it, I don't know if it is even worth re-waxing :(

My superglue would probably thwart her efforts. And void the warranty.
The label in my hat says they'll replace the hat if you lose it. You probably have to produce the lost hat to prove you used to have it.

LOL! :D Yeah, they've tinkered with that one too  I was just watching a video of an American guy comparing two hats, one just like the one I bought today, and another brand which cost a fraction of the price. They looked like they were produced in the same factory, which I dare say they were. There are identical hats on sale here too, with a different brand. That's another problem with sending your designs overseas  What am I talking about, I had the same problem sending my designs to Sheffield?! 😠 And those guys were being properly paid! 🤔 :harrumph:

Just shelled out for a Tilley hat, about £70 here, and at that price I was expecting it to be "Handmade with Canadian Persnicketiness"

From the Canadian delegation, we'd like to congratulate you on your Tilley purchase!

I may have a couple laying around. The hiker on the far left and hemp on the right are my favorites :)

Nice collection Mike :) I'm afraid mine will be going back though. I really liked the idea of buying an iconic Canadian product, but don't think I got what I paid (quite a lot) for :( Maybe I'll buy another if it's made in Canada, but I think the decision to start manufacturing overseas, while still hanging onto their iconic 'Made in Canada' status, de-values the brand :(

Understandable Jack. Mine are all made in Canada models. I wasn't aware they had moved some models overseas.

If you decide to try again, check out the T4MO-1 Hikers Hat or TH5 Hemp Hat. Both still made in Canada, and great for the outdoors. Going to stop selling now, as I'm starting to sound employed ;)

I don't think they've advertised it Mike :( LOL! :D Those are great pics my friend :)

I regularly visit the St Vincent De Paul op shop in Narooma....where a couple weeks ago I scored a like new black leather coat for 60aud bux.....perfect fit....turns out to be a USA made Fox Creek Leather....To buy new would have been around 600 aud bux.....didnt come with a warranty though...the only guarantee is that I look super cool .

I’ve got one I bought in 94 or 95 for a trip to Greece. Been a boon companion a lot…though I accidentally ripped part of it using it as a part of a shooting rest off the tailgate of a truck. It had shifted so it was below the front of the barrel…works still however. Love the hat. My wife hates it and I can’t figure out why. Actually a lot of my buddies give me crap when I wear it in the fishing or hunting.31A1BED2-2D17-4620-A1E0-0A221067D111.jpeg They all wear cowboy hats or ball caps. And me with my old tilly…and yeah it is a Canadian hat. Didn’t know they moved overseas. D92C8572-039E-4988-9448-01ED862C3D25.jpeg

Great pics :)
I'm glad I got my Canadian Grohman. How long before they follow suit?
Good reason to go out and buy one ;)

I was surprised to learn this as well. I just checked their web site, and it seems production of my preferred hat—the LTM6–has moved to China.

That’s just wrong. *This* is how all Tilleys should be:

That was the model I got too, apparently it's been their most popular model for many years. I think what the new owners have done is really short-sighted. I saw quite a few Tilley hats out and about in Leeds today, I hope they were made in Canada
Keeping it family friendly here, what the... is the... point of a... Tilley hat if it isn't... well made with Canadian Persnickitiness?
Exactly! :)

First let me say, I am in total agreement, but...
I keep waiting for the "no politics" (lol) chastisement that we hear every time this subject comes up in regards to knives manufactured "over there".

I don't have a problem with companies, like AGR, for example, who import knives, and are open and honest about their origin, selling them at a price that reflects that, or any other company who does the same. I do have a problem, with companies like Taylor's Eye Witness, for example, who crow about their Sheffield heritage, and sell their wares packaged with the same claims, while importing their products from places a very long way from Sheffield :( I wasn't meaning to be political, for me, it's simply about honesty

I understand and completely agree. It is what Buck knives do. I also believe the same applies to Schrade. They play off the longstanding American name.
As far as the price point for offshore mfg.- that is rapidly changing.
Cheers

Exactly this. I regularly recommend AGR knives to folks. I like the company, I like the quality, and for folks who are maybe a little less obsessive, but want a good quality knife for a good price, AGR is a great option. And AGR is honest and open about where their products are made, what materials are being used, etc.

But when a company is famed for making their product in a particular place, it debases the brand when that becomes a lie. I don't want a laguoile made in the USA. I don't want Dom Perignon made in California. Heck, I don't want a Filson shirt made outside of the Pacific Northwest. It isn't about politics, it is about honesty and authenticity. Appellations have value, when a brand builds an Appellation and then debases it, it is very disappointing.

^^^ this exactly would be an unwelcome surprise. I am not trying to bash China…I like a lot of Chinese things. Art…food, etc…but the conditions in the factories are tough on the folks there. Check out a film called Manufactured Landscapes. The opening ten minutes covers production in a factory and I am grateful not to be working in one.
