"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I understand and completely agree. It is what Buck knives do. I also believe the same applies to Schrade. They play off the longstanding American name.
As far as the price point for offshore mfg.- that is rapidly changing.
Cheers
Yes indeed Mark, RR knives have always been about 4 times the price here than in the US, but still inexpensive. However, some of the recent models are considerably dearer here than Case knives, and in fact approaching GEC prices
Exactly this. I regularly recommend AGR knives to folks. I like the company, I like the quality, and for folks who are maybe a little less obsessive, but want a good quality knife for a good price, AGR is a great option. And AGR is honest and open about where their products are made, what materials are being used, etc.

But when a company is famed for making their product in a particular place, it debases the brand when that becomes a lie. I don't want a laguoile made in the USA. I don't want Dom Perignon made in California. Heck, I don't want a Filson shirt made outside of the Pacific Northwest. It isn't about politics, it is about honesty and authenticity. Appellations have value, when a brand builds an Appellation and then debases it, it is very disappointing.
I like the company too :) Well said

Here's what company founder Alex Tilley thought: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/rep...make-his-hats-outside-canada/article22528484/

Exactly! Imagine my surprise!

but the conditions in the factories are tough on the folks there.
I just think their prices should come down when their costs go down. Unregenerate side-winding galoots.
And I love AGR too. He went offshore to produce great knives affordably, not to charge more for less.

Oh, we're in the lounge. I'll mention that I've had a heart attack.
It showed up on the EKG they gave me when they hooked up the long term monitor to investigate the irregular heartbeats that were showing up on my blood pressure monitor.
I didn't notice the heart attack, but I suspect it was in recent weeks when the irregular heartbeats started.

And the cardiologists think it's non-urgent enough that they can wait to see me till the 30 day monitor data has been analyzed, but the monitor will raise an alarm if I get urgent. So I'm unexposed yet on belay.

Terrible how our race has degenerated under my stewardship. Uncle Ed was something like 88 years old when he had a heart attack and fell out of a tree after they cut off his other leg.

I doubt I can top that, but I'm not done yet.

For a while there I was thinking, "I'll just buy whatever I want now", but now I'm thinking I might live long enough to have to pay for it, so I'll act normally, like Gene Wilder in Young Frankenstein.
I hope you live long enough to justify normal behavior many times over.

My Father was having a heart attack when at the doctor's office undergoing a stress test on a tread mill o_O I've always said the Doctor's office is a stressful place. ;) But Jer screened porch screened porch , at least you know what's up and you can ease up while on belay. Probably not a great idea to open your wallet unless you are made of sterner stuff than I. Take care and all the best to you.

Normal is a good idea! ;) Here's hoping for a good outcome, Jer! 🍻

Very sorry to hear about your heart attack Jer, but I'm glad that it wasn't a more traumatic experience, and that you're still with us mate. Long may it remain so

Thanks, guys. Talking to cardio was very reassuring. Certainly "worse things happen at sea", as some of our porch people know well.

[I went back and deleted wild uncle Ed and normal Gene Wilder. I guess I thought there was some self-pity in the Uncle Ed reference.]

I was thinking I should run out and buy a SCCY (I've heard id pronounced 'sky') CPX, which is the gun I was interested in when I found out the BDA .380 is no more. It's hammer-fired, metal-framed, and double action only.
I didn't buy one in the first place becauseI fell in love with the Security 9 Compact, which has turned out to be a little too compact for me, but the long clips with adapters will give me another 0.65" of pinky room. So it's a little early to go shopping.

The nice thing about the recent GEC Craze (read fiasco) is...
We are seeing a much wider range of different knives being posted, it's not all GEC, all the time any more.
Since I signed up here I have consciously tried to inject some diversity into the steady stream of GEC and Case content.

Some of the European members (and Jack :D) have done a fantastic job of broadening the scope of discussion.

Ridiculous or cool? On clearance for $31.49 down from $44.95.
I'll probably return this one too.

A billhook should really be concave all the way, and wider at the end wouldn.t hurt a blade without a point. And why the holes? A little weight at the end wouldn't hurt the chopping.

I need one of those. I have been using an axe and a saw…could use more heft though.

Yes. More flair at the end, and fewer holes would be good. I'll see how it works, though.
I couldn't resist taking it out of the plastic. If I can destroy it I'll get my money back, and if I can't destroy it it's probably worth $32.
