Is that a pikelet?

Or, let's see: You're a Yorkshire Puddin'head!

Am I close?

You're close in a way, since both 'pudding' and pikelet' are used as terms of (very) mild derision. It was once (and not many would say it today) remarked about British politician, and one-time Sheffield Council leader, David Blunkett, that he was "no pikelet". This comment, which was uttered by a Councillor Moscrop, led to the local newspaper headline: "Blunkett Not Pikelet".

There was a time when about half of England referred to this (below) as a pikelet, and half as a crumpet. They are toasted and served spread with butter. In Yorkshire, they were (and to some extent still are) known as pikelets, but our beloved pikelets fell victim to London cultural imperialism (the pikelet-crumpet divide was not strictly North or South)! First, the big bakers, who took over from the neighbourhood ones, started selling them in packets (rather than loose) with 'crumpet' on one side and 'pikelet' on the other. Then, they forced crumpets down our throats!!

Today, crumpets have replaced pikelets almost entirely. Some revisionists will even tell you that they were never in fact the same thing. Yet they shall always live on in the hearts of Yorkshiremen! Ah, an open fire, a toasting fork, pikelets, butter, and some Sheffield-made butter-knives, what more could anyone ask for?! :D

Had it been easier to find an image of a pikelet, I might have used one for my temporary avatar. To find the image below, I eventually had to search for 'crumpet' :( But it is in fact a PIKELET! :)

Seriously, I got my first Christmas greeting card this year and it was from knife dealer in the USA I've bought like 90% of my GEC's. WHat does that mean? It seems I am rather good customer :P Anyway it was really nice touch though. Bit funny though in generally it describes me rather well :P

Jack, as usual, thanks for the language lesson and humor.

Also? Should I get to foster more kitten babies again, there will now definitely be a "Pikelet" in the mix. :-)

Thanks P :D The folk of Yorkshire will thank thee greatly! :D

Just put up something temporary :)

The phoenix image is the logo of my former company 'Jack Black Knives'. It is loosely based on the emblem of the one-time British Iron & Steel Confederation (I used to have a beautiful antique silver watch fob, with the emblem in blue, white, and red enamel, but sadly don't have it anymore).

Very cool. I like it a lot.

MUCH better than the deflated popover.

Hi,

My GEC ebony Boy's Jack is due to arrive on Friday. Figures that the world is supposed to end on Friday too. Just my luck eh?:p I hope it gets here before the end arrives. A man should go out with something nice in his pocket.:D

Yah, the project engineers at work are sliding their due dates till after the 21st and crossing their fingers hoping that the Mayans were right. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

That's pretty funny! It reminds me of a friend of mine, long ago. We were watching a huge storm roll in over one of our lakes. He turned to me and said "It's the end of the world and I have no film!". Of course this was long before digital photography. Half of the humor was in his delivery but it still cracks me up to think of it.
