"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Interesting birds you have in N.America! Quite a bit different from the ones in Europe. Do some species migrate a lot in the Americas? We get birds from Africa and S.E.Asia here in the summer.

Oddly enough, winter can be quite a good time to see the resident birds, the terrible winter here forces them to come to feeders in parks or gardens. I feel it a duty & responsibility to put out food for them, it's rewarding to watch them as well, they bring a lot of beauty to life.

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

:D
From what little I have read, certain species of the Humming Bird migrate South to Mexico for the winter, and others I have observed take up permanent residency if they are fed.
OTOH, The Turkey Vulture travels all across the North Americas. Ugly but interesting bird.
I'm sure there are more.

Happy New Year!!!

My Thank You to all for great Bird photos, Museum and Knife photos and the many great nature and landscapes.

My Best to Kevin and prayers for his grandfather's complete recovery. The story of knife recognition was a delight.

This afternoon I did a project that should highly amuse anyone who has Mad Skillz with needle and thread, or who knows someone who does.

In preparation for an upcoming trip to visit a friend, I decided to stitch up a chamois cloth to serve as a knife roll. The last time I took a bunch o' knives with me somewhere, I folded them into a bandana-- which worked great up until the time I tried to remove one or more and the rest all slid into each other with that distinctive sound of metal and bone sliding into metal and bone. Eek.

Eight across the bottom, two up top. I left the top in halves to fit bigger knives horizontally if needed.
(Representative knives; I haven't made the final selections yet.)

Note the awesome stichery!

IMG_5526.jpg

Knives tucked in; once the two knives are in the top section, it folds over itself once to hold them in place atop the line of eight.

IMG_5527.jpg

Vertical fold; top knives nestle next to each other, the bottom eight fit like an eggshell, every-other.

... All knots were inside, until I noticed some oopsies after the fact and re-knotted the thread on the outside. That's how you can tell it's handmade. Snort.

Voilà!

The result will serve my purposes well, but throughout the process I was newly mindful of my mother's words of yore.

Years ago, seeing a pair of jeans I'd patched All By Myself, she said,

"That's pretty good for someone who doesn't know how to sew."

Thus endeth today's Craft Corner.

Now that right there is "funny!" :p
Love those Russel Barlows. ;)

It's been long enough that my hair's been falling out and turning gray that, some years back, I just said forget it and started buzzing it real short. If my hair's gonna do that, I say off with it! I used to pay to have it cut, but then I went the cheapo route and bought some clippers. Now my wife does it. We just put on the no. 3 clippers and run it all around the ole melon every so often. :D

Today was haircut day and it got me to thinking: How do you traditional cats get your locks trimmed? An old school barber named Floyd who knows where the fish are biting? A slick, upscale salon with Evian to drink, and bottles of $30 shampoo for sale? DIY at home? For $2 at the barber college just across the tracks?

There's a very old traditional barber shop I go to, with an old school Greek guy. There's car magazines, Field and Stream and Sports Afield magazines, newspapers, and talk that would embarrass the women folk. I go once a month for my trim, and wouldn't think about going anywhere else. I only found this guy a few years ago, when I had a major crisis when my old barber, an old Italian guy, retired to Florida. I'd been going to him for so many years, that when he retired, it was a major bump in my road. A man's best friends are his barber and his mechanic.

Upscale salon? Don't even think about it!

When I was a kid, barbers in England never seemed to have a clue how to cut hair. Me and my mate would alternate haircuts so we'd be able to laugh at one another. You had to practically walk round wearing a hat for a fortnight after. My sister, whose 2 years younger than me, became a hairdresser, so she cut my hair for a long time. When she moved away I struggled to find a barber that didn't mess around too much or charge the earth. I've kept it clipped short since the 80's, so any fool can cut it really. Eventually, a few years ago, I decided that fool might as well be me, and bought some clippers. I occassionally miss going to the barbers, but I don't miss the over-inflated prices they charge here, or all the messing around that sometimes comes with a simple haircut. A pal of mine has a missus whose a hairdresser and I have a long-running joke with her that she always looks at my hair and shakes her head, she strenuously denies this though :)

My mother and sister can give a good haircut. I go to them in the winter, and head down to old Wally World (yep, the Walmart barber shop) in the summer time. I get my hair short as can be, with my big giant head, I think it's a 4 on top and a 3 on the sides.

When I was younger, I went to the Hair Cuttery, where all of the cute older women would, well, give me a shampoo and a hair cut. I did not go because of the great haircuts...

Don't tell mom, but the best haircuts I've gotten were from the old guys, the real barbers. I got a really good haircut at a real old Italian barbershop in Timonium/Cockeysville, the day before my cousin's wedding last year. We talked about the Ravens and the Orioles, how he started. He was retiring the end of the year, I haven't been back. It was a little more expensive than Wally World, but I left a good tip. I was actually looking for a real straight razor shave, and I had stopped in his brothers shop about two miles down the road, first.

There is an old barber shop up the road in PA near me, Stewartstown. I've either been going to Walmart, or asking my mother or sister to do mine when they have time. I might head up there this weekend.

In the 1980's I went to this barbers once that was called 'Hair By Christmas'. It was aptly named. I only wanted a basic crew-cut, about a 4 at the time I think. The guy took ages, and I had to go back 3 times to get him to cut it short enough. I think he just really enjoyed cutting hair. He wasn't in business long.

theres a woman named angie at some chain haircut place in a strip mall next to a grocery store not far from the house. she cuts hair well and isnt scared of my bushy beard.

I'll bear that in mind for the future ;)

I was in a tobacconists today buying a little something for another forum member, when I saw they were selling off old cigar boxes for a couple of pound sterling. I was surprised to find the first box I picked up was still full of expensive Cuban cigars! The woman behind the counter was even more surprised when I pointed them out to her! :)

Nice knife roll by the way Sarah

My girlfriend bought me a Boker one for Christmas, but it only holds twelve knives. Might have to buy a few of those cigar boxes.

I had a whole slew of cigar boxes, I kept a few for my woodcarving knives, and gave the rest to my little brother. They were free too.

Hi,

Ain't no barbers left around me. Just hair salons. So my wife tends to cut what little hair I have left. And she has for many years.

A cigar box is a good thing. I have a few, but I should try and get a few more. I like the wood crates that clementines come in. I always like the artwork on the labels. They always remind me of my childhood.
