"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Starting in junior high my friends and I started giving haircuts to one another. I'm not going to lie, the first few times weren't very pretty though we did eventually figure it out. That all changed when I went off to college. I didn't know anyone and there was no way I was going to let some total stranger near my head. I sought professional help, but the only places nearby were salons. Screw that. A man goes to the barber, where the reading material is Road & Track or Guns & Ammo, not Cosmo or People. So I started cutting my own hair. All you need is a set of clippers, a couple of mirrors, and a little bit of practice. Been doing it that way for almost fifteen years now.

Alice cut my hair for the longest time. Did a darn fine job of it too. She's just not up to it anymore, so I started going to a local barbershop, it was weird for the both of us for a bit. We're both pretty happy with the way it comes out now.

I like the wood crates that clementines come in. I always like the artwork on the labels. They always remind me of my childhood.

Dale

Me too Dale, when I was a boy some of our furniture was made out of fruit crates covered with wallpaper or 'Fablon'. When I tell my kids that, they laugh and think I'm making it up! :D

I just wanted to say thanks again to everyone. My grandfather is out of the hospital and doing much better. The support and words meant a lot. It was all very appreciated.

I've seen the game Mumblety-peg referred to here several times, but wasn't sure what it was until I looked it up on the internet. I was minded to do this by wondering if it was similiar to a game which was hugely popular among children in England, certainly up until the end of the 1970's, caled Splits. In fact, they're essentially the same game it seems. Over Christmas, me and my girlfriend, who grew up in a different part of the country to me, were talking about the game. Not only was it universally loved and one of the most popular games children played, but of course it relied on you both having a knife in your pocket. I think the game was shown to me by one of my younger uncles, and I doubt I was more than about 6 at the time.

Good to hear, Kevin! :)

That´s good news. I hope, he´ll be fine again in a short time and a fully recovery.

Thank you so much Andi! I also really appreciated the emails. I got the flu from the hospital so I had not had a chance to check back in and say thanks.

Hi,

We had some furniture that had crate parts in them too. Waste not want not you know. And according to my Father, (and now me :) ), 'times was tough'. But my Mother would re-upholster with fabric. So tell your kids I back you up on this.:D

Kevin it's good to hear about your Grandfather. Strokes are tricky things and the outcome is never for sure.

I think that one is a record.

Hi folks,
from my holiday's nest in the Caribbeans, happy new year to everyone.
Kevin, now I understand better the tone of your emails...and I'm sorry for your grandad. But, as Carl pointed out, many old men made their way through life learning hopw to stand yp after they fell. It seems that your grandfather belongs to that bunch, and I'm glad he's well and out of hospital.
Sarah, nice work on your knife roll. I just keep my knives on a desk display (not originally intended for knives, but more for coins and keys). The advantages of owning few knives
Barbershop for me as well. I'm afraid my barber will soon retire; I hope I will find another one like him, although I'm aware their breed is thinning out. My barber has a young associate who lnows his job, but it's not quite the same thing.
As for birds, I can't say anything. It's a topic I'm totally ignorant about. But, Kris, your pictures are (as always) amazing :)
Take care folks!

Ah, but see-- mine live on my Tray o' Happiness (perhaps similar to a "desk display"?), which is not conducive to traveling.

Although I am now wondering if I should simply find and cut a piece of memory foam to fit atop the knives in the tray, and take them All. Heh. (Not as packable, however...).

Happy New Year back, and I hope your continued vacation is a good break in every way.

You mean you guys and gals don't just put them all in your pocket :D ?

Mine just sit on the closet shelf, with my ever dwindling supply of one handed wonders.

Fausto - Happy New Year, too :)
