"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Dan, I’ve been thinking about this ever since you posted in the Guardians thread the other day, and your post tonight prompted me to see what I could find out. Honestly, I hesitated a bit about posting this, as I’m not sure what the proper etiquette is here, but I think it’s fair to let Harvey’s friends here on the Porch know that he passed away recently. The obituary I found was dated June 18th. (I’m not going to post a link to the obituary here, as I don’t feel like it’s my place to do so, but those of you who knew Harvey well enough to know his last name and where he lived should be able to find it, or you can feel free to send me PM.)

I’m sorry to have to share the bad news. Harvey was a good guy and standup member here. He will most definitely be missed.
Oh No!!! I didn't know him well, but I sure knew his photography!! His passing diminishes us all a bit!! Rest in Peace, Harvey!!!
We will miss you on this Porch!!!:(

I was sad, and surprised, to read at breakfast this morning about Harvey's recent passing. I appreciated his encouraging words, his knack for hunting down vintage knives (especially lambsfoot knives), and his amazing photography, which in my mind often featured delicious-looking baked goods along with his splendid knives. In Harvey's memory I ate a double chocolate chip cookie after breakfast today.

I also thought of Harvey, when I ate an Eccles Cake earlier. Same knife too. Sadly, I forgot to take a pic :( Here's a substitute

Harvey had some superb old Lambsfoot knives, and when he was amassing them, would regularly PM me to ask about them. He was always so enthusiastic :)

Try clicking on the three vertical dots in the middle of the toolbar.

ETA: Are you seeing brackets on the far right of the toolbar (probably in a second row)? If those are highlighted, click on them and that may fix it.

Terribly sad news that has shocked me, to hear for the passing of a great Traditional friend here cigarrodog cigarrodog Harvey!

To all who got to know Harvey I am extremely sorry and sad to hear of your loss, I didn't get to know Harvey as a friend, but I kinda feel in a way that most of the Traditional people here are my "Traditional" pals, and Harvey's Posts always had a "good fella" kind of feeling about them every time and I always liked his posts and loved his photography.
To all who knew Harvey - I am terribly sorry to hear of your friend fallen, and hope that you and his family and other friends find some kind of strength to help them through this.

I've mostly been away from BF for the last several weeks, and I'm very sad to come back to read this. Harvey was a great contributor to The Porch, and seemed like a really good guy. He will be missed around here.

Hopefully it isn’t disrespectful to turn to more light-hearted discussion, but I have had a crazy week and feel like sharing.

My very small home has been in complete disarray this week. We had 6 new windows installed Tuesday, so Monday after work I had to move everything around to give the guys room to do that, then put everything back Tuesday night. Wednesday evening I had to take everything out of the kitchen in preparation for a remodel which started Thursday. I’m paying a guy to do it - he helped me go buy the cabinets and flooring and carry them into the house, but I have spent a good amount of time running around trying to find appliances and such.

My wife managed to cook for our holiday Wednesday, and we lived off the leftovers until last night. I set up a table in a bedroom with a microwave, coffee maker, and toaster oven, but I think we will have to resort to carryout for at least a few meals. I hope to have a sink again by Tuesday…

Outside of office lunches, I don’t usually use my EDC pocket knife for food prep, but since all my kitchen stuff is in plastic bins, this week has been an exception. It usually isn’t the sliciest of blades, but it certainly cuts cold lamb like a champ. Add to that all the additional cutting tasks which have come up around the house this week, and it has gotten quite a workout.

Trimmed the excess of some packing foam I used to protect the new windows from the “window shaker” AC units. Cut through smooth and clean with no snags.

Add to all that an extremely busy work week and my usual responsibilities, and I am definitely enjoying a few lazy hours here this morning…

I spent almost $15 today.

The table knives were fifty cents each. The blades are tempered like stiff springs, so all I'll do is grind knife-like points on them and sharpen them.
The hollow iron balls will be heads of walking sticks or canes, length to be determined, which will give me a couple of knobkerries with no whittling.
The cast aluminum garden fork just because I'm a sucker for these cast aluminum garden tools. Something to do with happy childhood memories.
