.October 25 is the feast of St. Crispin.

The St. Crispin’s Day speech from Henry V

by Private: William Shakespeare

King Henry V: What’s he that wishes so?
My cousin Westmoreland? No, my fair cousin:
If we are mark’d to die, we are enow
To do our country loss; and if to live,
The fewer men, the greater share of honour.
God’s will! I pray thee, wish not one man more.
By Jove, I am not covetous for gold,
Nor care I who doth feed upon my cost;
It yearns me not if men my garments wear;
Such outward things dwell not in my desires:
But if it be a sin to covet honour,
I am the most offending soul alive.
No, faith, my coz, wish not a man from England:
God’s peace! I would not lose so great an honour
As one man more, methinks, would share from me
For the best hope I have. O, do not wish one more!
Rather proclaim it, Westmoreland, through my host,
That he which hath no stomach to this fight,
Let him depart; his passport shall be made
And crowns for convoy put into his purse:
We would not die in that man’s company
That fears his fellowship to die with us.
This day is called the feast of Crispian:
He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
Will stand a tip-toe when the day is named,
And rouse him at the name of Crispian.
He that shall live this day, and see old age,
Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours,
And say ‘To-morrow is Saint Crispian:’
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars.
And say ‘These wounds I had on Crispin’s day.’
Old men forget: yet all shall be forgot,
But he’ll remember with advantages
What feats he did that day: then shall our names.
Familiar in his mouth as household words
Harry the king, Bedford and Exeter,
Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester,
Be in their flowing cups freshly remember’d.
This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne’er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remember’d;
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne’er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition:
And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin’s day.

From Henry V, Act IV, Scene III

I still wonder why there's no such epic litterature about Ste Caroline's day... That was july 17th, 1453, it happened at Castillon . 😂

Because the bad guys won that one? 😁
Thanks for the link.
No, because it is historically wrong.
Then, all those English nobles were just a bunch of mobsters, crossing the Channel to raid Normandy and Flanders (French fleet was doing the same on Channel harbours), a kind of guerilla.
Third the English army did nearly not need to fight, the stupid French nobles did the job.
Before the army would be in order the French cavalry (nobles) disobeyed the orders and did not leave time to the Genoese crossbowmen to take position and fire, then crushed them and the infantry when retreating, to finally get bogged down in mud., stuck in their armours..

Later , it was probably celebrated because it was absolutely unexpected and at little cost (and big fear). At that moment King Henry had lost most of all his possessions and all he gained was Calais and time to cross the Channel back.
Shoud they have walked to Paris, the end of the war would have possibly been different...
Same as players getting solace after losing the game , saying "yes, but we were leading at half-time !"

100 years war followed by war of the roses? back to back wars doesnt leave much time for recreation
Of course.

I've started going through my slipjoints and a lot of them need attention. I lost the use of my left arm 6 or 7 week's ago and sharpening on stones with only one useable arm just don't work. I bought a Work Sharp Precision Adjust sharpening system. So I thought that I would start giving my knives a little love and wow that new sharpening system works it has 220 320 400 800 ceramic and a strop. The screw going through the sharpener is for setting the angle from 30 to 15 degrees. I've sharpened with stones for years and this unit delivers a razor sharp edge a lot easier with great results that rival or really exceeding the old stones. over the years I puffed my chest and proudly declared I don't use any thing but stones and every one that is collecting just need to learn how to sharpen the old school way. Man was I wrong find yourself one of these sharpeners that you like and you find it works for you and start rolling up those burr's and buffing them down. Oh yeah I can sharpen using this unit with one arm.

Good on ya, for finding something that works for you. From someone whom has very limited use of 1 hand you learn to improvise. You can sharpen with 1 hand on stones, takes a lot more practice & figuring I've been doing it since I was a kid.
Good luck to you & hope your arm improves!

I also have one of the first versions of those and I have to agree with you that they Do Work although I have ended up mounting mine to a board to clamp it down in place . I don't know how accurate the Angle Settings are but it will get a knife sharp . I am thinking about getting the latest and higher priced version but have not decided to do it yet . The cost differance between the First Version and the Latest Version is quite a lot . Thank you for showing your's .

Randy, looks like a great sharpening tool. I’ll have to add it to my Xmas list. Hope your left arm gets better and in the meantime take care of the other!

Sorry to hear you are dealing with that, Randy. I hope it's temporary.

I've got 2 Lansky, a KME and fairly recently the Worksharp Elite electric belt system. I can put a super edge on a blade in 5 minutes or less, with the belt system. Took some practice on older kitchen knives and such, but I'm pretty good at it now.

When I was a young man it was a carborundum stone, and a bunch of scratched up blades. I agree, today's solutions are much better. At least for me.

As a guitar player that doesn't pick up his Hummingbird very much anymore, are you able to play?

Randy - don't stop fighting the fight- I hope you ate suffering only a temporary set back like our friends have already said!

Wee (?) story..
My youngest daughter was having a little trouble coming into the World during her Birth, she peaked out but kinda thought " well...... I am pretty cozy here I think I will stay here for a while"....
The Doctor ( whom she and I did not see eye to eye - she was one of those...) had Tayla by the head and her arms were visibly shaking using all her might pulling on Tayla's Head, I was standing right there and stated that this is not looking good and that that was a huge amount of strain on a wee Neck, it turned out that when Tayla was born she "somehow " had torn nerves + from her Neck to her arm.

So this turned out that Tay could move her fingers but had no ability to move her arm whatsoever - when that wee girl was lying on the floor - you would place her right arm over her chest- and it would just fall down again in a sickly flopping manner.

I saw that Doctor a couple of months down that track- who to be honest was not a nice person- and I let her know that if she was a guy- I would demonstrate on her just exactly the damage that she did, maybe I should have, I would be of Prison by now 🤣 🤣

We had specialists view Tay and they were planning on operating on her when she was around 3 to 4 years old- by then she would have had a string hanging off her Shoulder and would have been permanently disabled. I said to them that there is no way that is going to happen.

All that poor girl did was cry because of her pain - It killed me hearing her wails, I knew the terrible pain she was experiencing because through my training I had 4 Tears in one shoulder as well as 5 in my other shoulder at different times - which have now as I got older- still let me know in no uncertain manner that the'll never be the same.... and always will hurt.

Anyway.....
I was talking to my Chiropractor - who was a bit of a Nerve specialist as well - I used to see this guy every month or so, I was telling him about Tay - by now she was 6 months old - still had NEVER moved her arm in the slightest, he said to bring her in and he will have a look at her.....

Next visit, I bought this little bundle into the Doc's room, we had a discussion that there was to be none of the bone crunching he gave me- well ok it was me telling him this lol - Tony was his name- Tony looked at me and said no way- just watch.

He lay Tay down - checked out her wee joints then moved around behind her Head, placed one finger above her Eye brow - and went underneath her Back and positioned one finger in a certain area between her Scapula and Spine on the opposite side of where his finger above the eyebrow was. He pressed relatively hard for around 30 seconds, and swapped sides and repeated, he said that he would treat Tay for a year for free as he made enough money from me lol.

That night, when Tay and I got home I lay her down on her sheepskin, and for the very very first time in her life she lifted her arm off the floor about 6 inches!! I cried!
Tony basically was starting to " open" the pathway of messages from the Brain to the arm, Tony saw Tayla for around 6 to 7 months and worked on her as he was working on me, Tay regained probably 95% of her use of her arm- she actually is quite proud of her arm because it has a much bigger Bicep because of the compensation of the way she uses her arm- you can't tell unless you ask her to hold both arms out straight- them straight above the Head- there's a slight kink.

So.... if you are still awake after me raving on Randy - I apologise for the Novel, I just wrote this as I am concerned for you after reading your post, but whatever is going on in that shoulder / arm - please, please check out a person who deals with nerves and really go down that road my friend, if one doesn't work- source out another, fingers crossed for you Randy! 🤞

I'm crying now; and happy for Tay!! She has such a good Dad!!
I lost the use of my left arm 6 or 7 week's ago and sharpening on stones with only one useable arm just don't work. I bought a Work Sharp Precision Adjust sharpening system.
I lost the use of my left arm from a stroke 4 years ago, but with some determination and good physio, it's 90%+!! Took a year; and I hope you have success with yours, Randy!!

The latest update is that it was a 3.7 at 10 miles deep. It got our attention. 😬
Hope they settle down for you, Dan!
We don't get many in NYS, but I remember the Blue Mountain Lake, New York, earthquake of October 7, 1983. It was a 5.2.
We're in Syracuse, about 136 miles away. It rattled glassware in the cabinets, paintings on the walls, and boy you coud really feel it.
That's enough for me!

In 1989 I rode the Loma Preata earthquake. It was as I recall about a 7.1. I worked in the East Bay and was racing home on my bike to catch the World Series game between the Giants and A’s. As I rounded the curve of the Emery mud flats the quake struck. Imagine doing 60MPH on a bowl of jello while it’s being violently shaken. At first I thought I had a flat front tire but when I rolled off the throttle and looked down at my front tire I saw the asphalt splitting open I knew right then it was an earthquake. I pulled over to the shoulder and got off my bike. The approach lanes to toll booths looked waves asphalt going up and down. When it was over I split the lanes up to the metering lights which were red. People i cars started say that the bridge had collapsed and thought no way! A few minutes later the Highway Patrol were leading cars back off the upper deck. The rest of the story is long but trust me it is not one that I’d willing repeat. 🤯
