"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I'm in the market for a new stockman I want a medium size and not hard on nails and skin, along with old age I seem to be more adversely affected by pocket knife nail nicks these days.. Anyway , I have bought a few knives of late but all modern folders and not for sharing on this little part of the internet. So I just want to know has the advancement in CNC technology done for knives what it has for guitars, used to be a sub $500 electric guitar was just crap now you can get a great one under $300. So how are the import brands like Schrade, Marbles, Rough Rider are those type brands any of them good, can you get a good knife for $25 or so. or should I go straight to the Case counter and start there. I still have some knives that are now selling for far more than I thought they ever would. so I've turned them into closet queens, I'm just trying to get back in the hobby but things have changed so much in the last few years I feel like a newbie again.🥴
knarfeng knarfeng 's Buck suggestion is spot on. A 303 or a 301. Well made, easy pulls :thumbsup::thumbsup:

I like Frank's suggestion of a Buck 303. I don't have one, but my 301 has a very easy pull, more so than any of my Case knives.
My favorite knife lately has been my Opinel, though--a friction folder. Easy to open and close--won't snap shut on me and take a fingertip off!

I bought a Buck 301 in carbon fiber covers back in April, that came in very nice and sharp with good edges, and it's not a nail puller at all. It's hard to take good pictures of the CF because of the way this sanded-down carbon fiber reflects the light weirdly and not in the way it looks in real life.

At the same time I bought a cheaper Buck 389 Canoe that is also very well done for a Buck made in China (I assume China due to the low price). It's easy to open and feels like a knife costing 2-3x as much.

Ignore the bottom 2 knives in the first pic. I gave them away.

Wow I'm late for the birthday but the wishes remain 🍾

Very happy to see you two in that beautiful landscape .

In the same time we were on the north-west coast of France invited by P philippe .
A beautiful and relaxing place. A bit windy but nothing compared with the storm the week-end after.

Bother. Two lines on the card.
Well, according to the current CDC guidelines, 5 days after first symptoms, I'm done. And they appear to be correct in that for the most part. Back working today. I did ask my boss if I could work from home the rest of the week. I don't spring back quite as quick these days and it is less stressful to work from home. The warm wishes have been appreciated. Muchas Gracias, Amigos.

I bought a knife last night that I really wanted but with Christmas coming up I really couldn't afford good thing I'm no longer married. Anyway I was talking with an old friend that lives in Montana now but we stay in touch at least once a month. He's a retired Park Ranger who spent his last 11 years in Yellowstone and is into knives. As we talked I found out he had 2 of the new #47 Vipers so I bought one for way under $200 SCORE. When it comes I'll post pictures. I gues I'm back in the knife addiction in the last week I've bought 2 NOS Schrade Stockman, my son wants to start collecting knives so I bought him 10 Rough Riders for Christmas in various patterns to get him started and let him start finding what he likes . This place is a great place to be but it can get expensive.

I have a shameful confession to make - hopefully this won’t get me voted off the porch…

My wife was struggling to open something this morning - the type of situation we all live for - an opportunity to demonstrate the usefulness of these bladed implements we keep accumulating, and to provide at least SOME justification for for the money we spend on them. I was still in my PJs, with nothing in my pockets, and suddenly faced with a decision to make - do I go to my desk and grab one of the knives I have there, or go to the drawers where I keep the rest of my stash - and which one to pick? Frozen for a second in front of the bewildering and overwhelming array of choices, I went to the kitchen instead and grabbed a pair of kitchen shears from the knife block there…

I think the solution for similar situations in the future will be to purchase some MORE knives, to pre-position about the house. That sounds reasonable, right?

Packages are usually wrapped with sticky tape which leaves nasty and hard to clean with anything residue on blade, especially cheap tape. I absolutely hate that, and I hate to have my tools dirty, that's why I open boxes and stuff only with a beater zero-value knife that I keep on my desk. Or scissors, yes. I might change it to something more fancy one day though. ;)

At the risk of making my confession even more shameful, it was thick foil packaging. No tape-gunk risk was involved.

Oh, well, we all do crazy things sometimes, right? :D Also, you can't have a knife in a pocket if you got no pockets on you. So you should've first decided what outfit to change to, then which knife you want to carry today... Two important decisions, but no time to waste, so you made the only right tactical choice. No shame at all.

You need to adopt the "5-step rule." Nowhere in your house should you be more than five steps away from a knife. Drawers, table tops, in a coffee cup on a desk, a book shelf, just anywhere within easy reach. The only problem I've found with this rule is when the grandkids come over: how many do I have to move so they can't get at them.

Opening packages with tape certainly fouls & clogs up knives but a spot of WD-40 removes residues very well.

Yesterday I had a box to break down, nothing very big (certainly not a fridge or cooker type of thing) quite thick card but no staples. Started off with a small Modern but VERY uncomfortable in the hand the pocket clip (gasp!) digging into the palm/thumb. Decided to use a fixed, safer. Normally a carbon Marttiini would do it but years ago I had a deviant fad of buying Bark Rivers - they do look attractive (and that's about it, crap sheaths and the knives disappointing in durability) Anyway I got out a BR Escort which was unused and unsharpened, sunk tang a comfortable handle. After cutting the 4 sides and some inner packing I find the edge has several dents and nicks on it as if it had cut sheet metal or been seriously abused! Never sharpened nor used... But, they are nice ornaments....:poop:o_O
