"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

A day to reflect and remember.
Hopefully, my wife and I will travel to Normandy next year. We were supposed to go when the pandemic hit. We had our plans all set and paid for. She's been there. It'll be my first time. My mom's Uncle Johnny died storming that beach and is buried there.
Let me know if you fancy some company for a couple of days pal

Some times life reminds you that you’re not immortal. That was made apparent to me about ten days ago when after indulging in my daily doses of alcohol I fell down and couldn’t get up. It took my wife and me about a hour to get me on to a chair. My wife wanted to call an ambulance but I refused. When it happened again the next day was off to the hospital. It was a good thing to. I was suffering from acute renal failure. As my doctor brother said I was “Circling the drain”. Fortunately the doctors were able to get me back to normal. It was truly a humbling experience. Long story short, no more alcohol or tobacco. And nothing but healthy living! 😀
Glad you're doing well, Dan

I do not like the sound of that Dan
sf fanatic sf fanatic .
Good to hear you've taken steps in the right direction....just be aware that this so called healthy lifestyle and diet can lead to other, much more serious conditions....like veganism or wearing silly clothes and losing interest in Porch business.👍

A little history for you and me; this knife, a Gerber lockback, was won by my Father, in the Summer Pistol event - must have been in the 1970s, judging by the price on the box! He won a lot of Championships, as a great marksman!! NRA indoor pistol; he scored a perfect 100 on the rapid fire, and his total in the event was 297 out of 300!!!
He taught me how to shoot pistol from a young age - I was third-highest in my Company (of 200 men) during Vietnam - but I could never quite shoot like he did!! ;)
He passed in 1989!! R.I.P.
The name of his club is somewhat less than politically correct these days - I hope no-one takes offense!!

That is a cool story, fabulous marksmanship, a wonderful memento, and also a pretty darn nifty knife to boot.

Nothing wrong with the name, Charlie. Great memories.

Great bit of history Charlie, that's quite some shooting! 😎🙂👍

I've just got out of the dentist, and I'm 2 teeth closer to having to live on soup! 😩
Thanks for the compliments for my Dad , Jack!! :)

Sorry about your chompers!!😲
I'll be 1 tooth closer soon!! Waiting for the phone call to come in and have it pulled!!:(

Sorry to hear you ended up having to lose a couple of teeth, Jack, but here's hoping that puts a permanent end to your recent oral pain.
Besides, soup is nature's most perfect food!🤓

(In the first 3 months of 2023, I had a couple of teeth unceremoniously yanked from my mouth, but don't miss them at all from a functional standpoint.:thumbsup: One was the very back lower right molar which had gone through a couple of root canals and numerous crowns and finally broke off irreparably, and the other was a lower left canine/eyetooth that was being "resorbed". The loss of the latter one has some aesthetic consequences, but I'm really too old to worry much about that kind of thing any more.🤓)

I have a "peg lateral" that will cut your knuckle if you punch me in the mouth.

I had a canine being resorbed, and the endodontist was able to cut the gums and bone to get to the base of the tooth and clean out the resorption cyst and fill it (like a root canal), and I still that tooth 10 years later!

Unfortunately 3 of my upper rear molars haven't fared well due to some bone loss, but the periodontist and I have been able to halt the process since losing those. I'm due for an implant on the upper rear left where two of them were lost but I only need one. And I have good health on the bottom teeth now, despite having three implants where teeth cracked down the tip of the root over the past 15 years.

Thanks Gary, I made some tomato, red pepper and lentil soup last week, and put it in the freezer, in anticipation! :D Sorry to hear about your own dental woes :( Three of my lower back teeth are missing now, so I hope it's not going to interfere with my eating. I have one eye on an overseas dental 'holiday'!

That sounds like an evolutionary advantage that should become characteristic of the species, given enough time!

There's no snaggle-toothed smiley face!

Sounds like a good dentist buddy :) Sorry you've had all that trouble though

I expect it to go Soup-er, Jack!! I hope you are comfortable with the latest assault on your Pearlies!!
Thanks Charlie! :D I'm not very happy about losing two more teeth, especially as they were fine before I went to see my previous dentist, who re-cemented a crown in, without first cleaning the tooth, and left the other tooth uncrowned after that came off in the pandemic. They told me it'll take a couple of weeks for my mouth to heal. Then I'll see if I can still eat, or if I need to look at getting some implants - at my age, I'm not sure it'd be worth the trouble and expense! :D
