"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

It appears that Bambi kindly pruned my cucumber vines for me last night 😫

The plastic fencing from the last few years’ gardens deteriorated somewhat, leaving a low spot. I thought the suggestion of a barrier would be enough to deter her from getting inside, but I guess not. Thankfully she left my tomatoes alone.

Apparently she has a taste for jalapeño plants as well:

I used some wire and scrap lumber to block off the gaps - hopefully she stays out tonight.

In my parent’s neighborhood, the deer problem is even worse. I think somebody must be feeding them again - this one came right up to me the other day when I went to check on the place:

I feel your pain. We've had to put 6 ft. fencing around all our young trees to keep the buck from scraping on them and killing them. In our orchard the deer eat any apples they can reach standing on their hind legs, and in the winter they all come around the apple trees and eat all the low branches. We put up 6 ft. fencing around the garden to keep the deer out, but then the raccoons climbed up and over. So now we have a band of electric fence going around. It's a non-stop battle with nature. I encourage every deer hunter I know to come over to my property and shoot a few, but for some reason they aren't as easy to find that time of year. :p

Ain't that the truth!

That said, if you are in Oregon, I'd be happy to try to swing by during hunting season...

I do more turkey hunting than deer hunting. And I do much less actual getting. But it is fun seeing toms strutting around fanning out in front of my house every morning during hunting season and then driving out of town to where I can shoot the birds and seeing absolutely nothing.

Dan sf fanatic sf fanatic paid tribute to Willie Mays in the "What Traditional Knife are You Carrying Today" thread today.

This is where being an old guy kicks in with certain advantages.

I was watching TV live when Willie Mays made "The Catch". I also remember watching the New York Giants on TV before they moved to San Francisco to become the San Francisco Giants and also remember watching the Brooklyn Dodgers before they moved to Los Angeles to become the Los Angeles Dodgers and hearing Vince Scully as the announcer for the Dodgers before and of course after the Dodgers move. Boy!!!!!!! There was one heck of a hullabaloo when the Dodgers made the move - much like when the Washington Senators moved to Baltimore becoming I think the Baltimore Orieols.

Now I'll go back to one the drawbacks of being an old guy - putting ice packs on my knees.

I've always enjoyed turkey hunting, although 9/10 times I come home empty handed. I agree, seeing the Tom's try to impress the ladies is amusing.

OK, I've had about enough of this! It's been in the 90s all week around here, and the weather guessers in Harrisburg say we'll probably be one day short of setting a record for consecutive days above 90F. The record was 11 days straight set in July of 1999. I'm ready for October.

I'm glad it's cooler indoors!! 😲

Senators moved to Minnesota to become the Twins.

Ahhhh. Thank you. My feeble old mind has been slipping lately.
Even if we didn't have feeble old minds, keeping track of the Senators' history would be a challenge!
The original Washington Senators moved to Minnesota in 1960 to become the Twins.
Soon (the next year?), Washington got a new expansion team, also called the Senators.
But the "new" Senators eventually (1972?) moved to Texas to become the Rangers.
Much later (2005?), the Montreal Expos moved to Washington to become the Nationals.
(I recently learned that "Nationals" was the official name of the Washington "Senators" from 1901 until the mid-1950s, even though they played in the American, not National, League.)

My neighbours huge, totally rotten, maple tree finally fell early yesterday morning, blocking the lane going back to his house. This thing was a good three feet across, and completely hollow inside, except for all the sawdust that the insects left behind.

I was out inspecting it with my morning cup of coffee when he came down the lane riding his lawn tractor, and pulling a little trailer. In the trailer he had his trusty little 14" electric "chain saw." After a little chat, I said I was going to get into some long pants & boots on, and get my Stihl chainsaw & my pickup to help haul the stuff back to his burn pile. He's one who insists on doing things his way, and said that his "saw" & little garden cart would be adequate. Oooookaaaay!

Still, I got changed & helped him clear it away. Even though the thing was completely soft & rotten, it took all morning to cut that thing up in pieces small enough to fit in his little garden cart. I could've cut it up faster with my Buck knife.

Here's what's left of it this morning.
