"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

As long as we are on the subject, and in the same spirit that TCM has at the end of each year when they show all the people who have passed, I looked at some old posts and have a long list of folks who have not been seen here for at least a year, some over ten years. I know some of them have been called home, while most have stepped away for one reason or another. In remembrance of porch members we miss:

Two others that have not been on for some time are supratentorial and Merrymadmonk.

Amazing how time slides by. Did some searching and MerryMadMonk's last post was March 25, 2020. Here is a link to a great thread that he started on Antique Winchester knives. A great thread that hasn't seen the light of day for quite some time.
Supratentorial's last post was in the Simmons/Keen Kutter thread on June 21, 1918. I really didn't realize it had been that long.

I knew Pertinux was back, from seeing their 'Like' on one of Charlie's posts in late January.

I was wondering when they might choose to break cover and actually post something. Welcome back, Pertinux!

Is the rule about not using your real name (which Charlie just ruined) still in place?

I might be wrong, but I think she has been called by name many times in past posts. I'm not really sure what or if there is a written rule, but I think staying away from last names is appropriate unless someone has posted it themselves.
Frank, knarfeng knarfeng , is a lot smarter than me, maybe he has some input.

Beats me.
There is no rule on BF about addressing another member by name in a post.

These days, unless I am sure that a person does not mind being identified by their first name or unless they have it in their signature line, I just use their member name. And a lot of times I just use the member name anyway. Personally, I don't think identifying a member by first and last name is appropriate unless the post is about a scammer.

When I have a relationship with a member through PMs if they don't post their own name I usually just address them as J. (for John, etc.) in my post.
Using their forum name seems too impersonal for someone that I have corresponded with to any degree.

Yeah that bothers me too. I usually respond, Hello (your name goes here) my name is Dan. My grandma taught me it’s polite to introduce yourself when I meeting new people. I’m still amazed by the folks who just don’t get it!
Cheers, Dan (that’s called modeling behavior) 😜

It was a specific request by that member as I recall.

Edit: I found the post. Sep. 17, 2017. In this very thread. It was part of a more general conversation about identity safety on the Internet. I have respected their wishes in that post ever since.

Agree. I remember there was a discussion about it in this very thread a few years ago.

But there is no posted rule about it that covers the entire site. (...and I don't think there's a posted guideline about it in the Traditional Guidelines thread either.)

Agreed. Peregrin said as much in the original discussion, while stating the voluntary guideline specifically:

Not really a major concern for me, I was just respecting a particular member's opt-in. I would not have mentioned it again had not my comment recently been specifically questioned.

Present and accounted for 😎 I don’t address members by their name unless it’s in their signature or in their posts.

Maybe I should take you up on that; do you live near an Austin Moonlight Tower? 🤓
I recently read a book about the Midnight Assassin serial killer in Austin in 1885 (?) and learned about Austin installing these insanely tall light towers for street lighting.
Sorry I missed this post back in Feb! Glad to see you enjoyed the book, Gary! r8shell r8shell My client Skip Hollandsworth worked for nearly as long on researching and writing that book than it took for Austin to get those towers installed around town. Skip and I are speaking to a college class of aspiring journalists in Dallas later this month, telling the story of how that book deal came to pass. He also wrote Texas Monthly feature stories that were adapted into the great films “Bernie” and “Hitman” to name just a few.

That's great. I guess I'll have to pick up a copy of the book for summer reading. (I really enjoyed the Bernie movie)
