"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Hey gang!

I haven't posted here in the lounge too often, but I'm hoping to ask a little favor. My wife and I just found out that we are expecting our first child! Katie is still very early on, about 6 weeks. We're both very very excited, but also pretty darned nervous. If I could ask, if you have a moment, could you all keep Katie and the baby in your prayers? It would mean so much to me, I'd really appreciate it.

Katie (as well as my parents) are all hoping for a boy, but I must say I'm really not concerned one way or another, as long as it's healthy and happy.

I don't think we'll be able to attend the GEC Rendezvous as planned, since it's time to start saving back extra cash for the doctor bills, but that's alright. There's always next year! And now we'll have a junior knife enthusiast to bring along! :D

Thanks again for your thoughts and prayers, I really appreciate it!
-Dan

Congratulations on the begining of your new adventure!!

Once your child in in the world, and maybe the second, your children will be the biggest thing going. For the next serveral years, you will have the incredible joy of introducing the kids to the new stuff in their life. And at that stage, everything is new to them. Boy or girl, it makes no difference, they will still love walking in the woods, seeing new things in nature. My daughter Jessica was just as great to raise as an outdoors person as my two sons. Still is more of an outdoors person than my oldest son.

Your greatest adventure is beginning.

Carl.

Jeff that's an impressive garden you've got there, quite a wildlife sanctuary. I like to see people feeding the birds (and letting some animals take a share too), humans have destroyed so much of our world-willfully-that we need to put some back.

I don't know why, but I've been very fortunate to get near to wild animals. At the country place I've had a vixen fox and her cubs come to the door for scraps. In the car one day, a few kilometres up the road I came across 3 adult foxes by the verge. I stopped the car and they weren't bothered by me at all, two laid down like cats quite unconcerned and I watched them for several minutes just a couple of metres away! Even had a young wolf come to me by chance, it was a staggering experience, neither of us were afraid just respectful- very odd. A winter or two ago I was coming home in town and a Hare crossed the street and stopped right next to me, I could see his eye and nostrils steaming in the cold as close as a pet rabbit would come to you! Recently a young bird bangs on the window for seeds, when I open it and put some on the sill he will clear them then fly in the kitchen afterwards, perch on a chair and chirp at me as if to show thanks, then fly out. Such is the beauty of nature.

Jeff, great photos! Even when I had a decent working camera I was never able to take a picture of a fox in time, your's sits and poses for you, I'm so jealous!

God bless you both Dan, and congratulations! I am a bit old school and traditional with it, but I feel that a man's single most important job in life is to be a father. You must be so proud. Congratulations again.

Paul

Yes, Paul it was pretty astonishing. The fox sat there for about 30-40 seconds, then just lay down. He stayed there a good 4-5 minutes, until I moved out onto the deck to try and get better photos. The sight of me made him bolt. No telling how long he would have lain there if I hadn't disturbed him.

That is awesome Jeff, thanks for sharing.

I recently lost a very sentimental bottle opener. I was very bummed out, as it is not like me to lose things. Tonight, my caring, lovely wife handed me a beautiful Boker box with this beautifully balanced, perfectly functioning, damascus bottle opener.

Excellent, Kris!

On a side note, how's the new job going?

Thank you for asking, Frank. Your words could not be more true(A new job is always a testy time, no matter how good you are at what you do.) This is a much different work environment than I am used to, but I am getting the hang of the corporate mentality. It's nice to only have to concentrate on one manufacturer. Right now, I just take it day to day. Thanks again,

Kris

Hang in there, Kris. The first few months are always tough, even for jobs that turn out to be a pleasure to work at.

Sorry to here about a lost momento Kris, but WOW! what a gift.

I love the pic of it holding the bottle....testament to how us Europeans know how to make a good cap lifter! ;)

Keep at it with the work too. I work for a big multinational and as much as all the corporate state of mind, the 'for the good of the business' mentality can be a bit much at times, there is plenty of stability, benefits and opportunity to be had.

Best wishes.

Hate losing anything, sorry to hear about the loss of your trusty bottle-opener Kris, but that's an excellent replacement, a lovely gift, and a good opportunity for those great pics

It really hasn't sunk in yet completely for me. It's definitely going to be a HUGE change in our lives, but we've been married for 6 years this coming Thursday, and I think we're ready for it!

-Dan

Too cool, Dan! You're not ready for it ..... you never are. But you'll do great nonetheless. The key is to always support each other (man/wife) and to always put your family first. AND to never stop laughing and enjoying all the little blessings and wonderful moments along the way. Our first was a girl, and second was a boy (and third was another girl). You can't explain it, but you love all of them the same (infinitely) but in different ways. Hang on for the ride, man. It's going to get really interesting.

Saw an elderly man in a Davy Crockett hat today! Haven't seen one of those in a long time. Mind you, he was clearly mentally ill, poor bloke.

I used to have such a hat as a kid.

On my jollies I found a couple again, but ar'lass wouldn't let me get one :(

Think I had one too, but I was very young and not sure what happened to it.

What a shame! I could have introduced you to the bloke I saw wondering round the £ Shop waving his walking stick and dragging a shopping trolley! ;)

I occurs to me that I haven't let this pastoral corner of Bladeforums know of my travails....

My wonderful wife and companion of over 30 years passed away on the 28th of May.

Alice was the dearest person I have ever met and now my life collection has a huge gap of grail unobtanium.

But she is no longer in pain, tired or worn out. But the girl had a lot of try, more than most.

We got to tell each other "I love you" one last time and then she was gone....

Excuse me if I'm not around much.

And thank you for all your expressions of caring.

So sorry to hear that. No words of wisdom here, just some support from my little corner of the net. Stay strong.
