"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

cheers from southern FL (got here yesterday): hot and humid and cyclone alert and so on (and I'm just out of the Everglades), but then again, who cares? I'm on holiday ;)

Where will you be in Florida? My native stomping grounds!

Whoa Fausto, you're in south Florida?? Do you have time to hit Key West? Bahia Honda Key? If you make it to Key West, the tour of Hemingway's house is a must, as is the old Light house, and the Duval street pub crawl tour. And there's some clothing optional bars to hit. And Miami's South beach is a great place on a Saturday night. Have fun!:thumbup:

Carl's right about Key West -- I'd just add that you need to buy one of those hand-rolled cigars and smoke it while the sun's going down. And if you're going all the way to Key West, be sure to hit the No Name Pub on Long Key. It's VERY laid back, and very very Florida Keys. A really special place.

The best deal on cigars in Key West is the walk up Dominican Cigar stand on Duval street. Great cigars and very moderate prices. The walk in stores are outrageous and over priced.

The Schooner Wharf Bar is a great place to chill out with a cold brew or rumrunner. The staff is friendly and the locals hang at this place, so it's no tourist trap with high prices for watered down drinks.

Just been listening to an interesting interview on the BBC radio with a survivor of The Battle of Imjin River in the Korean War, when a UN force of under a thousand held off a Chinese force of tens of thousands for three days. The interview isn't online yet, but for anyone who is interested there's a couple of links about the battle here:

Plenty more links available with a simple Google search.

Not heard that term before Christian, thanks for the link  Astounding!

My pleasure Jack. The idea of using iron sights to hit a 12" target at 300 yards is daunting enough. Doing it 15 times in a minute boggles the mind. Those were some seriously skilled riflemen.

Carl and Mark,
thank you for your suggestions :-)
I've been to the Keys (and to Key West) during my last visit (three years ago), and I really loved it. Might as well go back there this weekend, but nothing is definite yet. What I enjoyed about the Keys, is the feeling of being in a totally different place from the rest of FL, which is relaxing and refreshing, even though I smoke no cigar. :p
Nark, for the record, and since this is your State, I'm currently in Homestead, SW of Miami :)

I don't know how many of you like gardens, but I stopped by Longwood Gardens, of Dupont fame, on my birfday yesterday. Walking for four hours yesterday is killin' me today, but I have pics to share.

How does the FL coast compare to the beautiful pics you post of your shore? I would love to take a peek at your camera man, you get some amazing shots.

Thank you all for your kind expressions....

Elliott, my condolences to you on the loss of your friend....

(Sorry, I'm a little behind the times.... just haven't much felt like forum crawling)

Alright Ladies & Gentlemen,

I need to tell you some news from my own personal side... Some of you guys & gals almost know it, but now I think the time has come to tell.

We (my wife and I) will have a baby in a couple of months.

I´m really very excited and I think this will be the greatest challenge in my life I´ve handled until now. But I´m propably the happiest man on Earth. :) :)

Congratulations Andi, wonderful news.
Time to buy a small pair of Lederhosen and another Jagdnicker or a small Dirndl ;)

Uncle Andi will now also be knows as Papa Andi!

Congratulations man!

My father and uncle kid around, because when they were younger they looked a lot alike (30's and 40's, same general build). The kids called them Uncle Daddy. In retrospect, that does sound bad, but heck, they were kids.

Congratulations to you and the missus, Andi! Good news indeed!

CONGRATULATIONS ANDI!!:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Have you popped a Champaign cork yet, or waiting until actual arrival?:D

Carl.
