You lot are awesome, I was at a surprise party last night where everyone kept telling me how old I was. Then I visit the traditional forum and I feel like a wee boy again!

You'd be a wee boy around my house! Happy Birthday, Paul!

I had a "duh" moment today. I've been working at improving my freehand sharpening lately. In the past I've been able to make my knives usable, but not get them as sharp as I like. I have used guided systems and powered equipment with good results. Those methods have their place, but I feel that freehand is an extremely useful skill to have and it's always kind of bothered me that I wasn't as good at it as I would have liked.

It had begun to seem almost like I was just going on and on without making any progress, as if I was fighting the stones. For some reason, I had the thought "Maybe these things are loaded up and aren't cutting anymore." I cleaned them with a good amount of dishsoap and boiling water after heating them up slowly first with hot tap water. The soft Arkansas stone turned from a dark charcoal color to light gray! I could tell the difference immediately when I put steel to stone.

I grabbed the Opinel I've carried for the past week. After a few swipes on the stone and a bit of stropping, it was hair popping sharp. I did the same to a couple other knives also. I'm certainly not claiming to be an expert freehand sharpener at this point, but it appears that my technique wasn't as bad as I thought. It's one of those times where you go "I can't believe I didn't think of that before!"

Compared to some here we are pretty darn young ;).

We are, indeed ;)

Come on Fes, we all know you bounce between a wider range...surely younger than 17 :p

Yesterday I witnessed something quite unexpected. I went at my uncle's house for my little cousin's birthday party (more of a family reunion, I shall say). Among the many foods offered, there were sausages and cheese which were served on a board with a knife to cut them. My uncle came out with a lousy, production made copy of a Sardinian folder which looked bad and cut worse (it struggled into sheep cheese).
I couldn't help telling it to my uncle (he knows I have a passion for knives). At first I thought I was the only one to notice this, then I heard my dad and other uncle grumping over the knife, and I knew I was not alone.
End of story, my Oeser whaler took care of the rest of the cheese and sausage until I left. Yet, I will gift a decent knife to my uncle for these occasions (maybe an Opinel folder or paring knife, if I can't find a real Sardinian traditional for him).

I just got the Tennessee big box knife store catalog on the way to work, and a Case trapper is on the cover, with their new buffalo horn scales. I am a sucker for these, and I would like to get one. No available funds is a good deterrent! Because the backpocket looks great with these covers.
