"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Thanks to all of you guys, she is doing well, and is stable. My brother told me maybe tomorrow she can be moved to a regular room, then on to a rehab facility for probably some time. She is a tough one! Again, I thank you, my friends, for the well wishes...it means a lot.

Thanks for the update Duane, that's good news

Duane, I just saw this and I hope all is well with your mother!! She will be in my prayers. I know all about this all too well.

Duane - I'm sorry to say that I saw the post about your Mom yesterday and discovered today that I had not replied to it. I hope she has a full and worry-free recovery. Best to your Mom.

Thanks, I just got off the phone with my dad, and she is doing very well. It will probably be a few days till the move to a rehab facility, and then probably a couple of months in there. I spent yesterday at the dealer getting my car squared away and ready for a long drive...
Sorry if I derailed this thread, but I do appreciate all of you guys kind words of support, Thank You All for that...

You didn't derail the thread Duane...not at all. This thread has no real rails (not that I'm aware of :p)
We're glad your mother is better. Rehab will require patience and dedication, but in the end the worst part of it is probably already behind her back...so all good :)

I don't think it even has rockers. I've been off my rocker for some time and haven't found it here.

I do have a mote though. Thousands of those pesky "dust motes" all over everything.

A friend of mine retired today at work. I had known for some time that he was retiring, but I forgot. You know how that goes.

Come yesterday and I suddenly remembered. Dang! I've worked with this guy for over 10 years. We've drunk scotch together in the evenings while on business trips. What am I gonna get him?

Dude! What's ANY knife knut going to get for friend for his retirement. Ah, but there's no time for buying online. Now what?

Did you know that there actually is one store in San Diego that still sells Case knives? And that it's an old timey True Value Hardware about 15 miles from my house? I wen there. There was STUFF all over tucked into every nook and cranny. Haven't been in a store like that in a decade. It was heaven. I tell you true that it is run by an old bearded one-eyed guy. Very nice fella. Let me look at his stock and pick the one I wanted. Then, because it was a bit stiff and I was taking it straight to give to my friend, he oiled the joints for me. A nice butter bean with blue covers.

I need to go back to visit the one-eyed bearded fella and spend more time in his store.

Sadly, those little hardware stores are becoming few and far between. There's still one a couple blocks away from where I live.

This is from a local publication called the Riverfront Times. It's from last year's annual "Best of St. Louis" results.
Your pooch has once again blasted its way through the back-door screen, and you've had enough. You need a paw-proof grill. It's either that or get rid of the dog. You could go to a big-box hardware store, wander the aisles aimlessly and hope to catch the attention of some teenager pretending to work while chatting on his Bluetooth, only to find out that what you want is out of stock anyway. It's hard to imagine that the tiny hardware store tucked into a corner of the Tower Grove South neighborhood could have what you want, yet when you and your guilty pup walk in, owner Don Scherer promptly gets out the step ladder and pulls down five different kinds of door guards. He compares the mesh to the size of your dog's feet. He shows you six or seven types of window screen. The place is spotlessly clean and smells like grass seed. A burly tradesman stops to give the pooch a pat. You decide to keep the dog after all.

Thought you folk might be interested to see a couple of wee things I picked up on my travels today. I don't know if anyone remembers the Valet Autostrop Razor made by the Autostrop Razor Co of New York. A bit before my time, but I found half a dozen blades. Also came across this British penny from 1785 :)

Interesting blades those, how did they work? Was it like the Rolls Razor that came in a silver plated box and you stropped it in situ?

Mammoth Penny, Cartwheel Twopence perhaps?

I come across the Rolls Razors regularly. Maybe these were for an alternative.

Yep, that's a Cartwheel :)

So that’s a cartwheel.

Do you have examples of a mag (farthing), joey (three pence), tanner (six pence) bob (shilling), and quid (pound)?

You guys don’t seem to have as much fun with your money since decimalization.
