"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

When the end of the line comes, we'll all have a few special days we remember. For me, one of those days will be Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013.

I took my boy (8) fishing for the first time. His day started at 5:15 a.m. when I woke him up. He quickly got dressed and grabbed the backpack we'd loaded up the night before. We drove to the lake as the sun was beginning to rise. We found our spot together and had lines in by about 6:30. We baited hooks together, we shivered together (and later, the sun warmed us up together), we whittled together with our Swiss Army knives, we devoured our sandwiches together, we threw rocks together, we discussed the finer points of casting together, we talked about life together. And around 11:30 when we had to load up and go home, he said, "Dad, you know what would be cool? If we could fish all day and then sleep in a tent, and then fish again the next day." :) I had to agree. That would be cool.

Here's my best buddy for life ...

Oh, we didn't catch anything. In retrospect, that hardly seems important.

That was really good to read, thanks for posting that. :)

Elliott I try hard sometimes to remember what I realized in the hospital. Not all the time. Grab your loved ones and squeeze them tight.

For those who listen to pod casts, I found the BHK radio podcasts on the podcast app. Dan and LT host a show every Sat in Ohio. Entertaining to listen to through the drudgery of work. Pandora got too expensive!

Little story from yesterday morning.
A bunch of nursing students who had been practicing with us were moved to another area, and brought us some food to say goodbye and thank us (yes, around here any excuse is good to bring some food and share it). Obviously, a blade came in handy, and I had to grab my Opinel from my scrubs' pocket and pass it around (no one else seemed to have a knife around, just disposable scalpels :D). So, while we were eating, a colleague of mine came out with something like "yes, it's definitely true: a pocket knife is the most useful tool and every man should have one around". I know for a fact that he doesn't carry a knife, which made the statement even more valuable to me. I'm going to gift him a knife (not sure which one yet), and I feel that one more pocket will host a knife from now on.
Always good news for a knife enthusiast :)
Meanwhile, I plan on visiting the knife exhibition in Pattada this weekend or the next. Hopefully this year I will be able to take some decent pictures, so stay tuned ;)

Good story, Fausto :)

I´ve had nearly the same thing some weeks ago while I was eating lunch with my co-workers, bosses and collegues. I´m sure that the meal the people were given to you was really fine.

In Sardinia you have some great knife patterns around. For your collegue I would think a stainless Opinel (maybe #7) should fit the bill.

Very cool! That's a proud moment. :D
Looking forward very much to your photos this year!

Fausto, its always great to hear a telling of a knife ambassador winning over a new convert
I look forward to the pics of some Resolza and Pattada knives!

Well said that man!

So true. I treasure the moment every time I hear someone ask me for a knife. Anyone who knows me knows that I will always have one. I love tutting at blokes who ask me because they don't carry one.

It's gotten to be a joke among my friends:
Someone needs something cut, and they say "Hey Rachel, you wouldn't happen to have a knife on you, do ya?" Everyone laughs because I always do, and I'm so eager to get to help with a knife.

Yes, I'm also thinking about an Opinel, but I could steer to something else...we'll see.
As for the pictures, I hope they let me take some this year. Two years ago, for mysterious reasons, it was forbidden to take pictures of the knives exposed (which I found totally absurd); I could take a few bad ones, and I wasn't willing to discuss the issue. Hope they changed their opinion about it.
The exhibition this year is a bit different, and (aside from the town's little museum) includes a visit to one or two knifemaker's workshops, and a small show about traditional clothes and tools. I should go there this weekend :)

Great story and idea, Fausto. I hope to see some great pictures of the knives from the exhibition as well.

I had a good visit today with my mother.Last friday she had been released into a rehab facility, then re-admitted to a cardiac ward in the middle of that same night for labored and irregular breathing. Today she was finally able to sit up in a chair for three hours. This has been a long couple of weeks for all of us, and she is definitely not out of the woods yet, but today I saw some hope, small hope, but hope nonetheless. Friday I need to return home to NC, but I think it was very important to have some time to visit...

Just an FYI, for those of you here that like BHK. I have been listening to podcasts of their Saturday morning show to get through the work day. Informative, fun. I've only ever met LT, and he sounds like he does at shows, not putting on (the radio voice). Dan seems like good people. A good alternative to the iPod and talk radio. I have been loading up my iPhone, I should just download everything on my iPod tonight and listen to that tomorrow. Good listening when my radio has gone up, but the aux jack still works.

They talk about lots of things, not just knives. Alot better than burning through minutes on Pandora.

Wishing you all the best, Duane. You'll be in our thoughts.

Duane,
we're all with you and your mother. The more she follows her rehab program, the less she will risk such troubles. So look forward. She will be fine.
