"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Great read, I don't have a BHK myself but I like their no-frills approach. Pure working knives. I like that. Great read, and it's good to see them getting media coverge.

Elliott, it's of course always good to hear from you.

As for your post?

How to break and warm a heart all at once.

So, do you think you'll be letting him on the couch?

:D

No one knew better the quality and depth of your love. His "approval" is a moot point; if anything, he'd have words for the foo' dog that didn't know how good he or she has it in your and Tina's care.

Blues, your pup's actions remind me of the story of the puppy that wanted a boy. He's just afraid other dogs will try to take the two of you, that's all. He's just gently reminding them that you're his now.

I like that.

And, you're on a roll....

Nice online article about Blind Horse Knives from CNN.

Thanks for posting that-- I would have missed it otherwise.

Yup! Did you know they make their reps get BHK tattoos before they can truly represent at conventions and shows?

At least, the guy who sold me mine in Titusville (not Dan or L.T.) had the striking BHK logo inked onto his forearm.

Maybe it isn't a requirement...?

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for the good words. "Smoke" is a good boy but we're not out of the woods just yet. Today will be a week he's been with us and we have yet another week to make evaluation.
There are some issues that need to be thought out and addressed and I am corresponding with the adoption folks and my own caregiver (who provides for the dog on those rare occasions when we are away from home for a period).

Hoping for the best but trying to keep a realistic perspective.

Yeah, I think we'll let him on the couch. He already knows which two are for his use and which aren't. (He's a clever, if stubborn, boy.)

Hi all, been a while since I've been active around these parts, mostly due to dealing with the loss of my beloved Weimaraner, Smoky.

Well, it turns out that Tina felt the empty nest weighing in on us and decided that we needed to add another personality to the household.

Strangely enough, on the day that I made my donation to the local fire rescue squad, a dog named "Smoke" was listed on a Weimaraner rescue site and located just 60 miles away.

Well, we went to visit this two year old, 90 lb. hellion the next day and wouldn't you know it?, he followed us back home. We've got two weeks to decide if he's a good fit for us.
(Barring unforeseen issues I doubt he'll be going anywhere.)

Anyway, here's a pic or two from the day we picked him up and making himself at home...

I sure hope Smoky would approve and I just thought the dog lovers amongst you would appreciate a small glimpse...though Lord knows what I've let myself in for...

That is so cool Elliott. I know how devastating the loss of Smoky was. I'm not much on fate, but I have to believe this was meant to be.
He couldn't have found a better home, and I'm sure Smoky would approve.

Thank you, Mike. It's always good to hear from you, my friend.

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for the good words. "Smoke" is a good boy but we're not out of the woods just yet.

Understood; I greatly respect you for even trying, not least because I know you'll do so responsibly.

I've recently been confronted again with my own limitations and the directives of wisdom, that place where I have to reckon that "can" doesn't mean "should." It sounds straightforward on paper, but is quite different when looking into trusting eyes that I could be good for, but likely at the expense of responsible stewardship and necessary resilience in other areas. But, I digress. ;)

I hope your path becomes clear, and the deciding is as peaceful as possible for all involved.

Thank you, Sarah. You are as wise as you are witty. You are a special friend.

Sorry about the loss of your dog and it will be waiting at the rainbow bridge for you. Enjoy the new dog for they are the best of family friends you can have.

Thanks for the kind words, Bob. You can read our boy Smoky's "Rainbow Bridge" tribute here if you'd like.

I'm sorry to report that we had to return "Smoke" to the rescue organization earlier today. He had some issues that required help beyond the time, love and training that Tina and I were able to provide.
He is a wonderful dog and would make a great companion under the right set of circumstances.

Elliott, I am so sorry to hear that it didn't work out.
That must have been a hard call to make. At the same time, I am glad that you were realistic in your assessment of what was possible. Better to know now.

Hope "Smoke" finds a good home.
Hope that you find another good friend to take into your heart.

Thanks, guys. We're pretty emotionally drained at this point but I've got to believe that it was for the best (regardless of how difficult).

We went through a similar situation a couple years ago with a beagle who came from very unfortunate circumstances. It's very taxing to realize that sometimes you can't help, no matter how much you want to. You made the best choice for Smoke, in that you put his interests first. It takes a big heart to be able to let go.

Thanks, guys. It means a lot to have your support. I know we're not the first and not the last to have to deal with these choices and decisions. It does help having you all in our corner, though.
If I can ever lend a hand when you all need, please let me know.

So here's a pic I took from the parking lot at work yesterday. This a chunk of downtown Pittsburgh, as seen from the south bank of the Monongahela River. The building on the far left with the pointy corners is One PPG Place, where I used to work in the past. The brown building in the middle has a beacon on top that blinks out "Pittsburgh" in Morse code at night. The brick building with the square, concrete framed windows on the right is the Allegheny County jail. The city's tallest building, the US Steel Building, is out of frame to the right.

Very sorry to hear things didn't work out Elliott. Hope that you and Tina eventually find a new pal :)

^ That's a great pic Blaine

I've just spoken to Duncan on the phone, and he seems to be having a great time over here. We're meeting up in Sheffield tomorrow :)

I'm sorry to hear about smoke, but like others have said, it's very brave of you to actually take the plunge and return him knowing that you cannot give him what he needs. I wish you good luck in your search for another companion who will fit the mould.

On another note, could I ask that the collective spare a moment to pray some people they have never met; a member of my fiancé's family killed himself this morning following the destruction of his marriage. If you could just take a moment I would appreciate it.

Paul
