"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I haven't been around here as much as normal lately. Elliott, it's good to see things are going well with Skylar.

It's getting to be my favorite part of the year to spend time in the outdoors. It's archery deer season here in Missouri with firearms season rapidly approaching and the leaves are starting to change color before dropping. The weather has finally cooled off a bit while still being warm enough to to not have to worry about snow yet.

While this part of the country may not be as idyllic or picturesque as some of the scenic photos posted in the "lounge", it will always be special to me. Many of my most enjoyable memories are from the outdoors here. It's just wooded hill country interspersed with farm fields, but still beautiful in it's own way. The last picture was taken a week after the others and although the hills in the background are out of focus, it shows how much the color has changed in a short span.

Thanks for posting your pictures Danny. I also find Missouri a very scenic state. The drive down Interstate 55 from St Louis to Cape is very special. Also being a former landowner in Washington County NW of Potosi I know just how special of a place it can be.

I didn't know you used to have land down this way, Ken. These photos were taken north of the St Louis area up in Pike County. We are fortunate around here to have a lot of nice wilderness areas to visit within a fairly short drive.

Dan,
Yep, I had a business for 18 years in Jefferson county. Owned a home in Pevely, or if really pushed, Horine! LOL. I am very fond of the land and people from Mo. I recently have thought about relocating to Lewis county.

Indeed it is. The first time I ever drove through the state of Missouri I remember thinking "Wow, this would be a wonderful place to do some hunting or fishing!" The place looked like a lot like my home state. The hills are about half as big as back home but very similar terrain.

I found the people to be very nice as well. Good folks.

Course the same could be said of your home state of Wisconsin Ken. I spent a lot of time up there (almost 7 years) and found the people and the state to be absolutely first rate.

I went to my sister and brother in laws house Sunday with my little brother, to skin a deer he had gotten with his compound bow. I took my Gossman Kephart EDC, my brother in law used his Gossman PSK I gave him a couple years ago, and my little brother worked off both of our knives. My little brother brought a Mora that he found, that I had left on my fathers boat as a bait knife, a nice old traditional piece with wood scales and a guard. It had gotten dull as anything, and I could tell my little brother wanted a good fixed blade of his own. I gave him one of my old Western fixed blades, a 36 maybe, that my father had given me, that he found. My little brother carried that all over the place in my fathers woods.

My brother in law told me he didn't like how his knife stained, I told him that the steel was O1 and a tool steel, and that's what it does, and told him to put a patina on it. He said he likes his knives shiny, and asked me to take it to Scott to get it cleaned up. I will do that, but now I feel the urge to get him a stainless blade from Scott, as well as the urge to get my little brother a Gossman, either PSK or UNK. This is what is commonly referred to as backfiring, when you try to create knife nuts!

The club (chapter of the Isaak Walton League of America) a few miles from my house where I spend a good portion of my free time. 125 acres of a slice of heaven on earth.

Check out my Facebook group slipjoint addict, one of our members is sharing a ton of really nice custom peanuts from the masters. Just saw a custom peanut size lannys clip. Amazing work.

Elmer_McCurdy.jpg

Have any of you folk ever heard of Elmer McCurdey, a cowboy turned outlaw, who robbed a passenger train thinking it was a mail train, got away with a relatively small amount of money, got himself shot, and then bizarrely, as nobody claimed his body, ended up as an embalmed circus and sideshow exhibit for the next 60 years?! Apparently, at the time of his death in 1911, nobody turned up to claim the body, and the undertaker embalmed him. His corpse got sold on and passed around, and somewhere along the line, people forgot they were dealing with a corpse, and thought they were dealing with a wax dummy. Then during filming of an episode of The Six Million Dollar Man in 1976, a crew member accidentally broke Elmer's arm off, and the truth was discovered!

Elmer McCurdey was subsequently buried in Boot Hill cemetery 66 years after his death.

I just heard this story on the radio, and apologise if it's already well known to some of you. For anyone else, here's some links about this bizarre tale.

Wow, that sure is strange! Never heard of Elmer before. What an unfortunate end.....

I'm glad there's at least two of us Alex. I was worried I was going to replies along the lines of "Yeah, have you ever heard of Robin Hood?!" :D

Thanks, Leghog. A fine remembrance for Veterans Day.

Hi Guys!

Well - life is strange somehow... many come and many go... but we always come back to the forums once in a while.

But I haven´t heard/read anything about Doug Add for a long period. Does anyone know what´s up? I really hope everything is ok...

Hello my friends. How are you all?

I've been working my butt off lately, so please forgive my not being around. It's all the joys of Bonfire night, the peak season for the business I'm in. Still a ways to go before I can return to normality, but I'm gonna try and get a post in here and there again.

I had said in an email to a fellow member the other week, I'd really been slacking on the traditional front due to the need for a 'one hander' at this time of year.....however, I did not stray for long. I soon came to my senses, realised my Svord Mini Peasant was perfect and it has been enjoying a lot of pocket time.

Yeah, I've heard they still burn witches out your way! :D ;)

Good to see you in here pal, your presence is missed. You've a lot of catching up to do!

Hope to see you soon (that bottle of Bad Kitty I've had for you the past few months is looking mighty tempting! :D)
