"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Ladies and gents, after using and amassing knives, I like to read about them. I've got a pretty good book collection going, and picked up two more over the weekend from a Maryland discout chain. Tactical Knife and Dr David Daroms Custom Fixed Blades. Believe it or not, the Tactical Knife has quite a bit of traditional knife pics and prose in it, and the Custom Fixed blades book has quite a bit of nice bowies and drop point hunters in it. The best part is, I got both books for 6 bucks a piece. In addition they had a number of gun and gunsmithing books. Reading about our hobby is an enjoyable part of collecting and amassing knives, don't pass up the chance to look for a book.

Hello my friends. How are you all?

I've been working my butt off lately, so please forgive my not being around. It's all the joys of Bonfire night, the peak season for the business I'm in. Still a ways to go before I can return to normality, but I'm gonna try and get a post in here and there again.

I had said in an email to a fellow member the other week, I'd really been slacking on the traditional front due to the need for a 'one hander' at this time of year.....however, I did not stray for long. I soon came to my senses, realised my Svord Mini Peasant was perfect and it has been enjoying a lot of pocket time.

Thom, it´s great to see you back again, my friend :)

Sorry to hear about your stress in the past period.

Yeah, the Svörd Peasant is a great knife. Great steel, imo!

The nightmare is over.

I won my appeal. The committee agreed that I should never have been dismissed, and I get my new contract tomorrow.

Still debating how to go about asking for 2.5 months of back pay since they overturned my dismissal, though...

Thanks, Jack. That's 52 lbs. of mayhem you're looking at. :p

I am on the road with work out of town a lot. So as my knife starts to dull I am looking for things to sharpen it with, coffee cups etc. I carry a knife in a KSF pocket slip.

So I decided that the side looked like a useable strop. And you know what? It worked great. So then I thought...what if I treat each side with some compound...

And the other side..

I have had no problems with it getting on my clothes and it gives me an easy way to keep my knives sharp when away from my home setup. No wear or damage to the slip either. Anyways..my GEC are happy now. Just wanted to pass on my experience.

Some fat leather on working clothes isn't a problem at all. Keeping your pocket knife sharp as ever is a definite pleasure. I will take your advice and duplicate it my way : I might treat my belt or my jean's seam with compound. Whatever works... Once you're accustomed to a razor edge of any kind, you can't go back.

Yesterday at work a youngster started to take the top off a can to spit in (dippers will understand) with a hen & rooster his father had given to him before he passed. I told him to stop wrong tool for the job. I used my P 38 I've had on my keyring since boot camp in 1977. He looked like I had just invented soup thourghly amazed. Sorry not really about knives but I had to share it.

At least this kid had a traditional knife and thinks it worth carrying. And he's not going to hurt it on an aluminum can.

I doubt many young people know what a p-38 is let alone how to use it.

Then again most young people would not have deleted their whole inbox by accident as I did earlier either.

To redeem young people somewhat, I think I have an answer! It's an army issue can opener. I don't know that for sure, just using logic, and I have seen the small can openers that generation was issued in the army. Sadly my uncle had to give his up at an airport one day. I felt terrible when he told the lady at security "The last person that used that can opener was killed by the Viet Cong!". I don't know if that was true, but it made me sick that airport security had to be so politically correct that they wouldn't let him take a harmless can opener on the plane.
