"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

If we knew... we would all probably be on that A&E show "Hoarders". I'll pass :)

My great aunt Liz, when she lived on her own, would not throw anything away. Her catch phrase was "That will probably be worth something one day"

You're right, of course. And the pity of it is, that most of the people that hoard stuff "in case" it becomes valuable, rarely ever live to see the money, even if it does "go through the roof."

I distinctly remember selling 500 baseball cards to a kid for $5.00- a penny a piece. And thinking what a good deal I had made. Those cards were all from the late sixties/early seventies. No telling how much they would be worth today. I kept 3 or 4 Nolan Ryan cards because he was my favorite player- and have no idea what happened to them.

I was surprised to learn yesterday that he is the owner of the Texas Rangers. I am a Baltimore Orioles fan (2010 season, the season of hope!) , so go Rangers in the AL series (no love for the Yankees ;))!

Nolan Ryan is one of the all-time studs in sport. Wasn't he over 40 when he threw his last no hitter? Two Ryan stories:

When he was with the Astros I went to Busch Stadium to see him pitch against the Cards, and we had 3rd row box seats right down the left field line,
where the opposing pitcher warmed up back then. We hung over the rail right by the catcher, and were literally within about 2 feet of where a hitter would be,
facing Ryan. As impressive as his fastball was, his curve was just unhittable. It got about 6 feet from the plate at belly button high,
and the catcher caught it about a foot off the ground. UNREAL!

I remember another time when he threw high and tight to some big, much younger hitter, and the guy charged the mound. Ryan stood there calmly,
waiting for the guy to rush him, and when he got to the mound, Ryan dropped him with one punch! End of drama. :p

Steve Holt! :D

When I used to collect baseball cards (where oh where are all of my Cal Ripken cards :(), I had a set put out by one of the various card companies, of Nolan Ryan. One of the dads in the SIDS group my family was in was a big baseball card collector. Anyway, he gave me that set, and one of my favorite cards was Nolan Ryan, his uniform covered in blood, throwing a pitch. The guy was one of the toughest men in baseball.

Cal Ripken Jr. was more subtle, but he was a bad dude too. Heard in an interview, he was going up against Roger Clemens, and Roger was known for a little tomfoolery ;). Cal, who is a big guy too, walked up to Roger, on the pre workout stretch bench before a game, and they started to wrestle around. Cal was letting Roger know that Cal was pretty strong, and Roger got the message.

I opened up the package and there it was: my brand new Case large yellow stockman. I picked it out of the packaging like a fragile jewel from some long forgotten treasure. The yellow spoke to me, promising great adventure and greater memories. As I slid the blade out of hiding the steel sang in the sunlight. As it snapped into place it was as if everything else in the world snapped into place as well. But everything wasn't right. Something was horribly, horribly wrong.
The yellow handle that once seemed so perfect now felt loose in my hand. As I peered inside the darkness between the liners a sudden horror came over me. The knife was being held together by tiny rotted wooden pegs! How could this happen? What sinister force could have conspired against me like this? And as if it were waiting for me to finally understand the the all encompasing evil at work, the liners slipped loose and the once proud knife crumbled to dust.

And then I woke up...

It was a beautiful day in Central NY today. I managed to put aside some time to get out in the woods and get a decent workout and some nice photos. It's past peek here but we still have some color.

These photos were taken at Clark Reservation State Park, a few miles from my home.

Thanks for looking!

Nice images and a beautiful part of the state. (Coming from a transplanted NY'er.)

Gary, I wish we had fall colors like that here!

Last weekend, the family and I spent three days camping at Dinosaur Valley State Park just southwest of Fort Worth. We camped out with three other families so it was lots of fun. It is odd how time slows down when you are camping. It seemed like we had plenty of time in the day to enjoy. I got to do a little bit of fishing but most of the time we hung around camp just enjoying our time together. Here are some select photos.

That looks like a great place to spend time with family and friends Luciano. It's pretty this time of the year in Central NY, but it won't be long before we're under a couple feet of snow.
