"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

This young fella has been a daily visitor to our backyard for awhile now. He likes that bird seed. There's a herd of a dozen or so that we see frequently.

Nice image, Gary. We get about a dozen deer (sometimes at a time) daily.

Two days ago we had a nice 8 point buck out back behind the house. We don't see them too often so it's always fun when one shows himself.

A close friend, or rather brother and long time contributing member of our gang here is dealing with a family member who is being treated for breast cancer. The treatment has been quite severe, but the results have been promising after some very hard and taxing chemo bouts as well as some tough surgery. It has been a rough road for both of them, but they are holding up well on all fronts.

Please keep Noi in your positive thoughts and or prayers, if you are inclined, through this and always stay on top of your loved ones to keep their screening tests.

Thanks.

Gus, I will certainly keep Noi and her family in my prayers.

I've had several family members battle breast cancer in the past few years, it is a horrible disease. It's hard to keep a positive outlook, but that's just as important as the treatment.

My hopes and prayers to them and their family. I know how tough it is as I lost my sister 22 years ago this week to cancer, she was only 29. What a sin.

I was going to post this in MDSMITHS thread about carrying one knife, but I don't want to derail it any further, so I'll post here. My great uncle was an old timer that got around. I live in northern MD, about a stones throw from the Mason Dixon line. Well, my great uncle visited this area a long time ago. He used to ride his horse from Baltimore, up to the state line for barn dances. After the almost day long trip, he would go to the barn dance, with a sawed off double barrel shotgun strapped to his leg and a bowie knife on his hip. This of course was in the early part of this century, when he was a young man. He said northern MD was like the wild west, and you had to go "well heeled". I only remember him in bits and pieces from my childhood, but you would never think of this kindly old man, my great grandmothers brother, doing that.

Listen to the old folks, they have some stories to tell...

It was probably the early part of the last century. ;)

Yep, those old timers had some interesting tales to tell, no doubt.

Sounds like he may have known Cal's grandfather. :p

If there is not already a bottle of Tabasco sauce on the table next to the salt and pepper you probably chose the wrong restaurant for breakfast. Just a thought.

I cut out these two jack o lanterns this afternoon using my Menefee zulu trapper. The thin blade was ideal for the job. Happy Halloween y'all!

Amen brother. And if it has a jar of those Trappey's Tabasco peppers in vinegar sitting next to the Tabasco bottle, you know you're home.

Heck yes! Even the elementary schools in rural Oklahoma have Tabasco and Trappey's on the tables!

I have shied away from all of the Barnes and Nobles, Borders and other booksellers out there, and stuck to picking up used copies at the local library sales, flea markets, Goodwills etc. I went through my very large collection of books, and found about 50 books that I have bought over the past few years at these establishments, and have not gotten around to even opening yet.

Anyway, right now I have about five books going at once. Yep, I think I'll even admit I might be a little ADHD. Anyway, one of the books I am reading now is an autobiography of Louis L'Amour. I'd picked up a few of his books for my father, and a few friends who liked westerns. Other than reading a few western novels, historical novels and scifi have been my favorite genre of books. I found two volumes of L'Amours collected short stores for a pittance at the Goodwill, and devoured both over the course of two days. The stories were not epic, but the vistas he was able to conjure in my mind were amazing. Maybe I just have a great imagination, but I truly believe he was a great storyteller. Anyway, it is interesting reading the autobiography of this man. He lived a helluva life before he turned 18.

Like all knife nuts, I am most interested to see if he talks about what knife he carried ;)...

I love to read, but tend to go in spurts. I'll read 2 or 3 books in a week, or go weeks at a time on the same one. I rarely buy books anymore though. I keep a huge "wish list" on Amazon, but mainly use it as a reference. I've gotten in the habit of going to the public library and checking out books. I love the price!

I did recently buy Keith Richards' autobiography and I'm about half finished with it. The first chapter is the story of his being arrested in Arkansas and charged with carrying a weapon for the possession of a hunting knife. I know that he carries a ratchet knife at all times, and supposedly has a switchblade collection, but the Arkansas arrest is the only knife content so far.

Today is my 1 year anniversary on BladeForums, and I re-upped from Basic to Gold Membership.
