Howdy, folks.
As you may or may not have noticed, I've been away from the forums for the better part of a week. It's not because I don't like you any more...

Tuesday a week ago, a close cousin of mine passed away suddenly. She was 26, and had been married for just two years, leaving behind her new husband (no kids yet, thankfully) and our large family.
On the evening of Monday, Feb. 10, Emily experienced a severe headache, bad enough that she went to the ER. While in the waiting room, she suffered a stroke and lost consciousness, at about 8:30pm. She did not regain consciousness from there, and slipped into an irreversible coma. By the time my dad reached me on the telephone, at about 5:30am on Tues., she had had zero brain activity for 8 hours or so, and it was time to drive the two hours to the hospital in Baltimore to say goodbye.
It turns out that she had come down with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, an extremely aggressive form of the disease, and the doctors say that she likely developed it around the preceding Thursday. There was not much they could have done to save her life.
Emily was truly a delight to all who knew her. She was unbelievably intelligent, fiercely independent, stunningly beautiful, and bafflingly creative. Wherever she went, the world was a better place for her presence.
So, our giant clan has been circling the wagons for most of the past week, and the funeral took place yesterday. The dust is starting to settle for me, and my eyes are beginning to ache a little less, but her nuclear family and her young husband have a long, difficult journey ahead of them. I would like to ask that, if you have a moment, and if you're the spiritual type, please remember the Schuetz and Stryker families in your prayers (in particular... Mom & Dad Julie and Eric Schuetz, husband Taran Stryker, siblings Cameron and Kirsten Schuetz), or put some smoke in the air, or whatever it is that you do to commune with your Great Spirit.
I hope that you all are well, and that everyone can remember to love their people while we have the chance.
Be back around more regularly, soon, I hope.
Best,
Alex
