"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Hi,

Great photos! It must have been quite an adventure to ride there and back.

You have a cute little Granddaughter. I'll bet she has Grandpa wrapped very tightly around her little fingers.:)

Look like you had a great road trip last Sept! Thanks for sharing the pictures Todd.

Always nice to see family:thumbup:

And last it wouldn't be a fun trip unless you go to jail once or twice, so here I am being arrested -:eek::D:thumbup:

Just kidding - the cop is my son in-law Kelly's husband -

Shucks, I had the best line for this photo... "Got any weapons on you? Knives..." ;)

Great roadtrip story Todd.

I have this disgusting, bad, rotten, hideous habit

I love fine cigars ;) :D :D

I have a nice (small) Colibri butane lighter. It works just fine until the breeze

picks up a little. I need a MORE MANLY outdoorsy type butane lighter.

Any of you manly men have suggestions?

I've been using an inexpensive Ronson JetLite for my cigars for a few years. Not sure if they still make 'em but they were about $3 at Walmart, work great and look reasonably nice.

You can get a butane insert for your favorite classic Zippo.

Edit: Of course, Zippo also makes butane lighters now. They don't have the same shape as regular ones.

I use nothing but disposable lighters anymore.

I got tired of the burn/rash you get from overfilling a Zippo when it leaks through the pants pocket, and I hate refilling butane lighters. And I especially hate losing an expensive lighter.

I might use a Zippo or a nice lighter if I had a place inside to smoke and keep my smoking paraphernalia. But I am almost exclusively an outside smoker.

Or my old Zippo and my hand cupped around it.

That's what I do- cup the hand

Disposable lighters are the cleanest when it comes to taste, for me that is, but there is something about that slight hint of sulphur from a strike anywhere match that seems to add to a good cigar. Depends on where you're at. Threw in a photo of a couple of Old Lions.

For lighting a good cigar, my preferences in order: Butane gas jet torch, Bic type disposable lighter, wood match (you gotta let the sulphur stuff burn away before getting the flame anywhere near your stogie) and tied for last - and least - a Zippo or the flame from a candle, both of which I find give the cigar a funky taste. By the way, there are some good tips here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xF2ir96lHkU

I would think a digital camera would seem much better that a scanner to get an image of a 3D object like a knife. However, a few months ago I researched a new all-in-one wireless printer/copier/scanner and picked up a Canon PIXMA MP560 Wireless Inkjet All-In-One Photo Printer. If you have several wireless laptops in your home like I do, it is the way to go. Scanning over wi-fi feels weird but it works great though I have not tried scanning a slipjoint. There should be plenty of reviews on this particular model to help you decide.

Again, IMO a camera will do a better job.

One cool scenario: wooden matches in an original MARBLES match safe, struck on the "match-strike" long pull on a good old Schrade Walden stockman. Oh... and perhaps a different species 'backy? ;) Oops! Strike that last clause... :D

I don't smoke and never have but I have been using same zippo for 10 years (I got it when I was 18) to light camp fires, candles or unfreeze my bikes lock during winter and anything you possibly can imagine but light ciagerettes. I do love Zippo and its so handy when camping.

Happy birthday to me! Speak of the devil, my wife bought me 2 Cuban cigars and a nice bottle of rum for my 42nd. I'm a happy man. :-)

Happy b'day and enjoy those cigars, Mark. I'd prefer bourbon but I guess rum will work as well!
