"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I know the old Gal don't look like to much.....

One of the few times I'd ever disagree with you, Anthony ;) - that's a FINE lookin' Apache! I never get tired of looking at her whenever you post pics.

Luciano, I remember back in the early '70s my buddy had a '61 Chevy with a straight 6 - and talk about literally being "shade tree mechanics" -we drove it under a big old tree limb equipped with a chain hoist and swapped out engines - took us an hour and 20 minutes start to finish. Takes longer than that to change spark plugs on some of these newer vehicles ..... if you can even do it yourself.

Just for grins and giggles, here is my poor mans street rod. A 1959 Chevy Apache step side.

If you look up "mnblade's dream ride" in the dictionary, that is the photo you will see!

Anthony, that's a great lookin old yeller Chevy truck

Thanks to all you guys for all the vintage Chevy Truck support. :D

I am the quintessential back yard mechanic, literally. ;).. I learned enough as a young lad to mottle through most of a decent portion of the project. And have learned a bunch more and continue to learn as I go.. She is definitely a labor of love to be certain. :)

Best,
Anthony

I never pictured you being that "Sporty" Anthony :D

That is a good lookin old truck. I've never seen a 50's era truck, with a late 60's/ early 70's bed on it before

About 25 years ago, my dad had a 56 Chev with the big back window. He bought it from the original owner. Never wrecked, original paint and had really low miles on it ( I can't remember exactly how many though).
6 with a 3 on the tree. I loved that truck and always wished I would have bought it when he sold it. He sold it to our neighbors, it was his wifes truck. She had it for about 6 months and it got totaled :(

They just don't make em like they use to

The bed is off a '65 long bed as I recall, cut to size and covered with heavy diamond plate.. I told you she was a poor mans street rod. :)

Thats alright, shes a good lookin truck. I've found over the years, I have more fun in the rigs that aren't high dollar and perfect.

In a past life :(, when I had a car or pickup that was show quality, all I did was fuss over it. Worry about rock chips, people in parking lots, rain :D, etc.
On the ones that weren't quite as perfect, I just drove them and enjoyed them.

My boss and I were talking yesterday about projects. I've been thinking of picking up a Chev p/u from the 50's and Trav and I will fix it up, and it will be his first rig. He is excited about it, so am I.
I picked up one of the old car trader magazines, and he found some real nice ones in it. I had to point out the prices, and let him know "He was a little short on cash" to buy one of those :D He asked me if I had a spare 30,000 sittin around?

It took me a couple hours to quite laughing

Hi,

Man it's good to be home! It's been a long two weeks. A couple of funerals, a fall down the basement stairs, a Father-in-law who shouldn't touch any plumbing, and the general insanity that passes for life around here. I will get to have a couple of days to myself before I need to prepare for Thanksgiving and then we will need to travel back up north to finish up the plumbing before it to much colder.

I've missed checking in here more than I thought!

Dale

Hey Dale! Sounds like a tough fortnight. Ya, you'll need a couple days R&R to chill out, catch up on BF, and get ready for Turkey day. Welcome back!

Not fishing this week as we are planning to have Thanksgiving with my wife's parents who were not able to make it up to our place this year. Therefore I am working on the turkey today that we will take to them tomorrow.

For the past 14 years or so, I have been roasting a turkey on our smoker grill outside. I use a combination of mesquite wood and charcoal. Charcoal to help keep some consistent heat and the mesquite for the wood flavor. Originally, I tried smoking a turkey at the lower temperatures but that took forever. I usually had to start past midnight to ensure it was done for dinner in the evening. I now just roast it at a higher temperature simply for convenience and due to the fact that I brine the turkey for around 12 hours, it does not affect the juiciness of the meat.

As I mentioned, the brine has been the key to maintaining a moist turkey. I basically use the following (for a 12 to 14 pound turkey):

  • 2 gallons of water
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 cup kosher or non iodized salt
  • 1/2 cup dried thyme
  • 1/2 cup dried rosmary
I stir that all together in a pot big enough to hold the turkey fully submerged in the brine and chill it in the refrigerator for a couple of hours. I add the thawed turkey in the brine and then refrigerate once more for 8 to 12 hours.

The morning I prepare the fire, I remove the turkey from the brine, rinse it off and put in an aluminum pan and cover it tightly with aluminum foil. I then roast it for whatever length of time it needs for the size and towards the last two or three hours, I remove the foil to brown the turkey. If you don't use foil, due to the wood smoke, the turkey will come out almost black and the mesquite flavor will be a bit too strong.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving y'all!

Could anyone recommend a decent quality yet affordable tobacco pipe? Preferably one without paper filters. Thanks.
Jim

LJ Peretti has pipes out of Boston. Quality stuff. My father smoked pipes and we spent time there. Some are pricey but some look reasonably priced. He has his own line that are cheaper as well as estate pipes. I was just at the site and some lines are 20% off.

I haven't smoked any of my pipes for several years but when I did, my favorite one was a Savinelli. They have balsa wood inserts that you can put in the stem like a paper filter but I never did use them. It smokes exceptionally well without them.

I also really liked my Kirsten, especially for English blends. It really brings out the flavors of the stronger blends. A rather modern looking pipe but a superb smoker.

Niether brand was what I would call low cost but they were not that expensive either and the pleasure I got from smoking them far outwieghed the cost.

I had to try out several brands and styles before I found my two favorites.

Feel free to send me a PM, Jim, if you want more info.

Hey, you guys finally touched on my main hobby... Trucks! I'd thought about askin' if anybody was into older cars or trucks here before, but never do... dunno why.
Gorgeous truck Anthony! I'll have to grab a couple pics of my buddies 68, 69, and 70 Chevy pickups to show here..

Here is the 69(although the frame is a mid 70s style, its got an interesting mismatch of 2" in the rear and 6" in the front of the body lift because of frame curve differences)

the69.jpg

Here is a teaser(only pic i have here) of the 68 as it is now, in the middle of a frame off build we're doing... we did the 69 last year, but i lost all the pics I had of it before.. it was almost as much work. The engine sitting there covered is a small block 400, with high compression 327 heads, a custom flywheel to the 4 speed behind it. Trivia; Chevy Never offered the 400 small block in front of a manual trans from the factory, so it takes custom parts to do, we ran the numbers, this 400 is out of a late 60s camaro, the intake on it was a special deal they did for only that car for just one or two years....He went eddelbrock though. ;)

I'll grab some better pics this weekend..

teaser.jpg

Its funny actually, my buddy and I, he was raised with Chevy, and is die hard bowtie fan, I was raised with Fords, and love them(although I'm not strictly a ford guy, I'm a truck guy, as long as its USA made..) but we're best friends, get a long great, and work on each others trucks A LOT. lol

If you guys aren't adverse to Fords, I'll post my highly customized Bronco... Or my soon to be hot rod f150... or the daily driver... or... ;)

Gary.

Gary,

Nice old trucks! Much looking forward to checking out your future to be posted pix!.

Jim,

If'n your still looking for some good smoking pipes, I have 1 or 2 that are slightly broken in that I'd be happy to send you if you like. I just pretty much gave it up. Just need your address, pard and it'll be my treat. I even have some of those traditional--natural balsa wood filters to go with them too.

let me know?

Best Always,
Anthony
