"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I do not see myself spending more than approximately $400 for a custom and something much less for a non-custom knife.

My limit for fixed blades is $100 or $120 max in most cases. For folders it is around $50. It is not so much that I value fixed blades more, but rather that I use folders more so I put more wear and tear on them.

However, I buy a lot on the used market so I can sometimes get a $200 knife for $90 (Lone Wolf T2) or a $100 knife for $20 (Swiss Champ) as I have done in the past.

As for customs or at least made by hand (for some people custom means designed by the buyer but made by a knife maker) you can often get real nice knives in the $100 range from up and coming knife makers on various forums.

For in person knife purchases I usually stop at $30, but online I've bought $130 factory knives, and Vince has removed about $250 for a custom Lloyd knife. But those days of customs are probably far behind me for a while, so other than whatever BF is chosen next year I don't see me spending more than say $40 on a knife. Most of my slipjoint purchases are under $20. But when you get a colander of knives for $3-$35 it's hard to go wrong:

But I also suggest that a person not buy their first Slipjoints new, and rather check out working used older knives to see what works for them or not before dropping the $100 on what might not be for them.

I posted this in the 2014 forum knife gallery but I'm posting it here too in the hope that I'll have luck with finding out who it was who was so good to me.

THERE'S SOMETHING SPOOKY GOING ON!!!

This arrived in the post. I didn't order it.

I contacted Barry to tell him that I hadn't bought one this year due to an incoming baby, and I was worried I'd been sent one in error and someone would've missing out... I then received an email from Charlie saying that a mysterious benefactor had stepped up to assist me in my plight and that it wasn't him!

Will the mystery traditional blade forums present giver please make themselves known?

This deserves a special thank you and I am extremely grateful - this is a lovely piece of cutlery.

Paul

There was actually a small queue forming to send you one of these Paul ;)

Just a matter of choice and preference. As always, it all comes up to what you want in a knife.
Some people are happy with production traditionals, others just want it "their way".
Some prefer to have 50 knives for 20 usd each, others will spend the same budget on 2/3 customs.
It's all about what makes you happy. :)

And, talking about knives that make you happy...enjoy your 2014 knife Paul. Whoever gifted it to you, I'm sure that public recognition interests him/her less than the pleasure of knowing you have it and enjoy it :)

And indeed she did!

As soon as they were don humiliating the poor girl, I was right there with her bag of jerky treats. There has to be some kind of reward for her ordeal!
Thank goodness for that, I felt her pain :) She is adorable Carl!

Oh she got her reward for being the good girl that she is. Keeping in mind the expression on her face in the first pic, here's a shot of her shen she see's the jerky treat bag in Karen's hand. A whole change in attitude, now that all the candy had passed out, and the night was done. She'd now be willing to wear that ridiculous costume all day for the right reward!:D

Poor Pearle! My next door neighbor has two poor little dogs that I've never seen without clothes! Disgraceful! They're always clothed appropriately for the time of day/weather, etc. They always have pajamas on at night! I assume they wear these even when indoors. I wouldn't know because I've never been inside their house.
I hope this doesn't get out of hand with poor Pearle!
My Daughter dresses our terrier up from time to time and he has that same panic in his eyes.

BTW....my Daughter just added a Corgi to her menagerie of critters, Pics later maybe.

Fall hike in the woods.

Karen and I took a woods ramble in the hills of central Maryland. Temps in the mid 40's, perfect blue sky without a cloud in sight. Very windy, but nice. Love the sound of the wind rushing in the trees.

Great pic Carl, looks like a lovely day

Saw a peregrine falcon as I was on my way home from my IWLA chapter clubhouse yesterday. Seeing more and more birds of prey (eagles, hawks, and falcons especially) in the area as the years pass by.

Very cool  I see a lot of red kites round my way, some kestrels, the odd buzzard, and a few types of hawk. I love to see wildlife :)
