"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Hi,

Congratulations Jani!! An important milestone in your life. And the GEC is a fine choice to accompany you on your graduation.

Dale

My work buddy got the call yesterday morning, they had found a kidney match for her. Operation today. She will be in the hospital for a week, and then out of work for about 6 months. Her name is Gisele. She's a good friend, and when I first started working with her about 5 years ago, I found out she was on the transplant list. It's been a long ride for her. We are all hoping and praying that the kidney takes. Thank you in advance.

I'll add my prayers for a successful operation and a speedy recovery for Gisele.

A small announcement to my friends in traditional forums: I've just graduated from my university and I am now Bachelor of Business Administrations: Logistics and Logistical computer systems.

Thank you everyone, this place has given me strength to push thru and graduate in time :D I am going to wear my GEC #61 bloodred jigged bone Congress on pocket when I get my diploma at graduation ceremony.

Congratulations Jani! You'll never regret the hard work it took to get that degree.

Tonight we had a dinner and white elephant gift exchange. There was a range given for the gifts and to stay in it, I picked up one of the new CRKT congress knives. It ended up going to one of the older gentlemen in our group. He mentioned his knife had worn out.

I had picked up the knife hoping to share my hobby. I knew of one other knife nut in the group. I sort of thought John would be the one to end up with the knife. In fact, his wife had picked it and people laughed knowing it would be added to John's collection.

As these gift exchanges go, he had taken the knife from her. She had taken another gift. When someone took that one, she took the knife back from him. John quickly intervened and made sure it stayed with him.

I think any of us in the group would have done the same. And, had I known his knife was worn out, I would have offered him any one of my collection.

You see, he was one of the heroes that fought across Europe in WWII. I would not have known, except when there was a discussion about Patton one day, he was asked his opinion. The men laughed as he said, " He was a real sonofabitch" or something similar. It seems that he was still mad that Patton taken his units gas and ammo in his race across Europe.

Once again, I find myself humbled. You just never know how some nights are going to turn out.

Well, it sounds like you made someone's Christmas very merry!

You'll have to pass our thanks to John for his service so long ago.

I should be clear.
You see John did not end up with the knife.
When his wife sought to reclaim it for him, he made sure that it stayed with the other gentleman.

Of course John should be thanked as well. His service was in Vietnam.

Ed T, maybe "Santa" should make a special trip to his house on Christmas Eve for a "surprise" gift that was no loaded on the sleigh for delivery . . . :D
Please pass along our thanks to him as well for his time & sacrifice for our freedom we enjoy today.
Be safe.

Since it such a "wonderful place in the neighborhood". Did Mr. Rogers ever pull out a pocketknife on the show or just a blunt scissors sort of place....not real world if not. CH/300

I don't know if Mr. Rogers ever handled a knife on his show but he always wore a sweater and long-sleeved shirts. He was an ex-Sailor and his arms were tatooed. He thought it was a bad example to show young childred tatoos.

Actually, that's an urban legend. Mr. Rogers never served in the military.

I see him as a Congress sort of guy.

Dear Urban Legends:

I've been listening to the radio today, and a couple of speakers made mention of the "fact" that Mr. Rogers was a Marine sharpshooter; some even said he's supposed to have had something like 150 "kills" in the Vietnam War. I don't think that can be true, because I think he was on TV during the war — in any case, he would have likely been too old to serve in Vietnam.

I was wondering if you'd heard the story, whether it — or any part of it — was true.

Dear Reader:

Unless all the biographical information we have about him is wrong, Fred McFeely Rogers never served in the military in any capacity, let alone as a Marine Corps sniper (or Navy Seal, as another version of this apocryphal story claims). Some cynical folks may be loathe to believe that the gentle, soft-spoken host of "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood" was exactly what he seemed, but he was.

Rumors to the contrary began circulating in the early 1990s. It's unknown where, precisely, these stories originated, but around 1994 Fred Rogers' alleged military exploits became a hot topic on the Internet, and grew hotter as the decade wore on.

I had heard some years back that he was in the Marines. I never bothered to check it out, but I always had a hard time picturing him in the Corp...

My son took his oath as a soldier in the US Army this past Tuesday. He will leave for basic training on 01/10/11. I couldn't be more proud of him. Please keep him in your prayers.
