"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I hope that this not Off-Topic* but I wanted to thank everyone for the wonderful advice, education; and, civility that I have been afforded since stumbling on this forum in my quest to find a civilized gentleman's knife. I have found many gentleman's knives in the gentleman's forum.

Happy Holiday's to everyone,
David

* - if it is: - then what I meant to ask is: what is Santa's TRADITIONAL KNIFE? ;)

I agree... What a great place. Rumor has it that Santa will be visiting my house with an USA made 77OT in his pocket.

Happy Holidays everyone!
Paul

Yeah, this quite a pleasant little corner of the internet.

I see Santa as a barlow sort of guy. Or maybe a whittler. But probably a barlow.

Happy Holidays indeed, gentlemen.

Santa surely carries a harness jack, what with having to make repairs to those reindeer reins. All the takeoffs and landings puts enormous strain on the leather.

I wouldn't put it past the Jolly One to "carry a SAK" full of all the necessary tools to fix gear and occasionally help out his buds. Those tweezers gotta come in handy for pulling splinters from little elf fingers.

He is quite a talented guy and I can see the need for the occasional carving tool, so I'm certain he also carries an old Joseph Rogers whittler.

Being the consummate working man, he probably drops a Barlow in one of his huge pockets from time to time as well.

Come to think of it, there's not a thing keeping him from being a knife nut just like the rest of us. :D

Happy Holidays.... Have a very, merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year.

Merry Christmas guys!

May the tree be fruitful with blades of 1095 ;) and the table covered in great food to eat.

Happy holidays everyone.

Something that has been on my mind over the last year.

Would I be abusing my position here if I ban  people who call slip-joints "slippies". :D

Something about the term slippies makes me want to put my hands though a monitor and slap the taste out of a few mouths. :)

I think it's a fine idea, Gus...heck, even Santa likes to administer a beat down every now and again...

If you really want to eliminate something annoying, how about banning the phrase "knife porn"?
It's so corny.

Boy, we could be at this all day...(if not longer)

Tactical Knives

Mall Ninjas

I shudder to even attempt a list of all the ridiculous terms extant...

Some wise man once said, "Slippies" is ghey". I agree with that man. :D

When I read "slippies", this is what I picture:

Can we add "sheeple" to the list? That one has always bugged me. Just because someone doesn't appreciate knives doesn't mean they are bad, it just means I am better. :D

One of the good things about the traditional forum is that those terms so rarely come up here :).

That's traditionally because the slippies worn by most sheeple turn out to be the very popular and comfortable mall ninja model which the tactical holiday shopper still has an opportunity to find by close of business Friday...That is if they're not too consumed by viewing knife porn to actually leave the house before the stores close.

:D

Has anybody else watched the new version of True Grit yet? I went to see it yesterday. The original version with John Wayne is one of my all-time favorite movies, so I had mixed emotions about seeing the remake. On one hand, I think the Coen brothers are geniuses, and have loved every movie of theirs I've seen. On the other hand, I thought it was approaching sacrilege to tamper with such a classic as the original.

I have to say I absolutely loved the new version. I can't pick one over the other, but I will say that I don't think anyone will be disappointed in the remake.

Jeff Bridges was excellent as Rooster Cogburn. I wonder if two actors have ever won an Oscar for playing the same role? The gal that played Maddie Ross was very good. I thought Matt Damon was better than Glen Campbell in the role of LaBoef. And the guy that played Lucky Ned Pepper was also great (Robert Duval played him in the original). The cinematography was excellent.

I read the novel many years ago, and will re-read it soon to see which movie version is closest to the book. I won't spoil it for anyone by pointing out the differences, but I did notice that many scenes were exactly the same as far as dialogue.

I'll be interested to hear what others think.

Haven't seen the new version but I have seen the old one several times. Actually, I saw it recently again on AMC a couple of nights ago. My brother-in-law wants to watch "The Searchers" this weekend. I've seen that one many times and it is my favorite John Wayne western. I doubt anyone could remake that one with as much emotion as John Wayne put into the character of Ethan Edwards.

p.s. It is nice to see a resurgence of the old western movies. I am quite tired of the fast paced "Transformers" non stop action and the product placement movies of today.

I just watched The Searchers yesterday, and it is definitely one of Wayne's best. Some film writers have placed it in the top 5 of all American films, not just westerns. Near the end when Wayne scalps the Indian Scar in the tent, you briefly see him pull out an interesting Bowie, which he shows earlier in the film digging dirt after finding Lucy, dead. I checked YouTube unsuccessfully for a clip of the scene. Anyone have a picture, or know what kind of knife Ethan used to scalp Scar?

Another one of the John Wayne/John Ford movies often seen this time of year is "3 Godfathers". I always liked that one too.
