"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Thanks Anthony,

Well, here is my main truck, and main project for the last 2.5 years, 1978 Ford Bronco...
In no way a restoration, I got it free from the last guy that off roaded it hard, then it sat for 10 years with not topper... There was 8" or 9" of collected moss, mud/soil and leaves in the back of it. amazing the floor didn't rot out. A couple hoses, oil change and gas and it drove home though. I was going to make a mud drag race truck out of it... till my daily driver died a year ago. So, it transitioned to being street legal again.

These pics were this last August just after I changed the front clip, got the rear window in, and just got the hot rod flames finished up.. Has a 400, C6 auto, 205 gear driven t case, and someone swapped in a 8.8" rear end out of a 86 f150 instead of the stock 9" They also did lift coils in the front and pre '76 f250 highboy pickup springs in the back-- nets about 3.5" of lift.. Also makes it 5/8 ton truck instead of 1/2 or 3/4 ton ;) :D

The rest of the customization is mine. I hate trucks with toppers, no visibility out the back, and love the short wheelbase on these trucks, so it was a perfect idea to convert to a short, short bed pickup. (I also didn't get a topper with it, that came later) What they called 'Half Cab' on the older small broncos...

Thats the stock rear window and a section of the topper re mounted permanently as a pickup cab wall. I have 2' of in cab storage behind the seats, and 4.5' of bed. That rear bumper is off a '90 Suburban... fits the bronc body line and width perfectly and was free. ;) I have no problem mixing brands.

Its not as purty right now, I got in a fender bender on Oct 5, and now have a less straight replacement fender on the pass front, with no flames, and the grill shell is bent up a little...(I rear ended a guy with that corner) and the radiator/core support pushed back 5 or 6 inches... I have a parts truck though, but am one fender short... I've bought 3 parts trucks this year, and something always happens to bring me up one passenger fender short.. Lol...

meh... I'll shut up now that I'm rambling on, and on, and on..

Oh, yeah, almost forgot!

Hey Jim,
if you take him up on that... or even if you don't actually, I have some free pipe tobacco for you if you want it... Or if anyone else wants it(Jim gets first dibs though!) Its flavored stuff i got in a sampler package, a couple ounces of "Brandy Alexander" and of "Margarita" The BA is OK,a litle sweet, just not for me, but the magarita I hate, its actually fruity and a bit sour... tasting.

my favorite pipe right now was a cheaper one(around $30 as I recall), its a Baraccini briar, a churchwarden thats about 10" long. nice pipe, a cool smoker and only took about 7 or 8 bowls over a week to break in and cake. My christmas list this year is topped by another like it, but shorter for better portability... that church warden can be a pain to smoke while driving or anything other than sitting around ;)

Short wheelbase with axles high above ground and some good wide, mud/snow eatin' tires and you can get just about anywhere you want to go.Good huntin' buggy! Dual tanks?
Greg

Thanks for the generous offer Anthony but after giving it some thought I have decided to not get another habit started.

Thank you gentlemen! yes, it is a blast to drive. In a way i wish i hadn't lowered the gear ratio in the rear; The rear the last guy swapped in had a 3.08:1 ratio... I had it up to 120mph with that. :D I lowered it to 4.10:1 for more torque and off road pull, but top end is around 80 now.. but its all good, since something this high, but short wheelbase would be easy to roll at that speed. Thats why I bought a low 2 wheel drive long bed with a 460 big block this last summer; building a drag truck.

Ah, nope, not really enough room under it for duals, but it has the factory option 33 gallon tank so it equals out a little... Not that i can afford to fill it.(7mpg average) ;) Yeah, it eats deep snow, and mud, but ice isn't great, the tread is too big to grip... I need to get another set of tires to stud/sipe for next winter.

Went quail hunting with my dad and brother last Saturday. Dad has three pointers, two are full blood german shorthair and one is a shorthair-brittany mix. The dogs had a great time and so did we. 40 birds in all. It was a long day but worth it. Pictured from left to right, my dad, myself and my brother.

Super day in the field, Chuck!

Any pictures of the dogs by chance?

Anthony

Congrats! Not too many quail left here in the midwest.
We used to put up 7 coveys a day on our property in Southern Illinois, and now we're lucky to find one or two.
Still plenty of deer, though.

My work buddy got the call yesterday morning, they had found a kidney match for her. Operation today. She will be in the hospital for a week, and then out of work for about 6 months. Her name is Gisele. She's a good friend, and when I first started working with her about 5 years ago, I found out she was on the transplant list. It's been a long ride for her. We are all hoping and praying that the kidney takes. Thank you in advance.
