"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I love the western movies, but more than anything I have liked the family MacHeyans. Spelling this feels wrong, but Zeb was the hero of my childhood. I was around 10 when it was shown here in Sweden. The music still thrills me as does the music from the good, the bad and the ugly.

I loved the sheath! definitely a nice knife.

Absolutely gorgeous! Thanks for posting those images. Yeah, the leather is as nice as the knife in those. Just sweet.

Amos, you're back!

Been so long I thought maybe the wolves or injuns got ya! :D

Carl.

Lol! Wish they'd had hauled me off to live with them mebbe!

Hung out for a year or so on a 1911 forum. Got to be a lot of the same stuff repeated as happens on forums when you been there awhile. I also got to spending too much time reading and posting, as also happens. I've found I need to just go rambling around the net for a sabbatical, or as Crocodile Dundee would say, a walkabout to clear my head.

Good to see you fellas are still here and going strong.

We were at my in-laws just down the street for their traditional Christmas eve gift giving and I was in the kitchen when I heard my wife say, "Ohhh, Honey! We need a knife." LOL, she knows that if I have my pants on I have at least one, and probably a couple of knives on me. Of course I say, "Whatcha gotta cut?" before I pull on out. Oh, open a box with packing tape. Drop the Queen single blade jack that Waynorth gave a few years ago back into the right pocket and pull out my well used SAK Classic from the left pocket. Don't like getting tape on my primary knives.

For a year or so now my standard load out is a traditional slipjoint and a Morgan dollar in the right pocket and the little SAK and an Engelhard 1 os., Prospector in my left. Traditional pocket knives and silver. Nice companions.

I currently have to figure out/find just the right knife to go with a S&W 25-2, .45 ACP, 6.5 inch, pinned barrel I picked up about a month ago. I'm sure if I try real hard I will be able to find the perfect companion for it that isn't in my pile of knives just so I'll have to buy a new knife. :D

Btw, I like the OT thread. Since this is one of the more down home, home away from home kind of sub-forums, it just needs a place to gather and chat. One of the things that was getting frustrating when I left. No place to talk about the peripherals that just go with traditional knives and folks gathering around them.

Good to see you again you cantankerous old blackthorn wielding, burley smoken, rum toddy sipping Irishman! Need a few more like ya around these days. Hope y'all are still zipping around on those Vespas. Okay, maybe not right now, but in the good weather.

How's the S&W 25 shoot Amos? I passed on one of those a year back as I've always been more of a semi-auto man. Do you still have that Springfield 1911.

I can't believe my eyes!
Welcome back Amos!!
Good to see you around here. It's been too long.:)

Hiya, Charlie! Good to see ya again. I still tell stories about my knives from that American camped out up in B.C.! I actually unwrapped that Appaloosa Case and carried it in my vest pocket to the company Christmas party for the site I work at. They put on a fancy event so it seemed like just the knife to go with my suit.

Naw, Christian, as I tell my wife, about the only things I'm pretty sure I won't trade or sell are her and the dog. The Springfield went down the road sometime back. I was carrying a Colt Series 70/MKIV at work for awhile, but it was modified with the bells & whistles. I traded it off and will eventually replace it with a basic GI type. I like those best. Probably another Rock Island Armoury basic format and just trade out the extractor and grips. Haven't shot the 25-2 yet, but I will have too soon. Rebuilding my .45 ACP stock. I went to a S&W M&P 9mm for work. Points like a 1911A1 and shoots dead on. I figure if I haven't got things sorted or gotten out of the AO by two mags worth I've pretty much/am screwed up anyway. ;) Though I do get a hankering for a 11.43 mm on my hip now and again.

Sigh, gotta get ready for work. I'm leaving early so I can stop by the gun shop. :D

I am glad that One-Eyed-Jacks was mentioned here. One of my favorites, but a huge failure for Brando. If I remember correctly, the girl who was Maldens step daughter died not very long after the movie. She was a heavy drinker and drug user.

Okay, so I don't need the new monitor and computer upgrades I'd been saving for. It was just because anyway. There was a sweet little Henry .22lr lever gun on the used rack at the shop. Emphasis on was. I'd sold a few knives recently and saved some fun money back. I've missed the Henry I traded in on another gun a few years ago. Yep, I was pure ripe for the moment. Picked up a nice little cordura scabbard to go with it. Don't have a clue what I'll mount it on or where I'll wonder off with it to, but ya never know what opportunities might arise. Home from work and it's sitting nearby.

Time to play the match the knife to the gun game.

Btw, Henry is coming out with a .22lr version of the Mare's Leg in February that has an MSRP of $360. Guess I need to dig out my DVD of Wanted Dead or Alive and watch some episodes.

They have a .45 Colt version targeted for April this coming year. That sure would go nicely with that Sam Elliot knife rig Robert was showing.

Howdy Amos,

Glad to see ya stopped by in here again. :)

GOD Bless you and all of yours, pard. Please be safe for the New Years!

Hey Amos, everybody needs a lever action .22! Nothing better for those afternoon plinking sessions, seeing how far you can bounce a Coke can on one tube full of bulk pack Federals from the 'mart. :D

Got about 6 boxes of those and maybe another 1200 or so rounds of other stuff. I kinda like .22lr. Heck, I don't even have a centerfire rifle anymore, but I have 4 1/2 22lrs (okay the puple laminated 10/22 is the "Wifle" as it is the wife's) and 1 .22 Mag. The 1/2 is an original Charter Arms AR7 that needs a stock.

A double-duece, a pocketful of ammo, and a good slippie. A man could live in the deep woods with that combo. Oh yeah, your Dad was just such a man. ;) Makes you laugh when you hear all these guys who claim you have to have the latest uber-tactical firearm and mega, super, monster blade to even set foot of the pavement. When I hear some of em talk I tell then about your Dad and his peanut/Colt Woodsman combo and how it was all he needed. If I think they have any sense to hear that is. Otherwise I just smile, nod, and move on as soon as I can.

Maybe add something like a Case Finn or a Mora to round it out if so inclined. I do like a sheath knife, and one sized to wear as a neck knife doesn't hurt. I've worn my Eddie White that way a few times.

Anthony, I finally got around a few years ago to trying that Speyburn you suggested. That's the other single malt I have on hand now. It's kind of like an everyday pipe or cigar where the Glenmorangie is more like your sit and focus on it indulgence. Those and a bottle of Knob Creek small batch Bourbon make for a good stock for those rare sippin occasions. (Took me 2 years to finish the KC and still working on the single-malts.)

Might be interesting to try and see what certain other enjoyments we have would suggest themselves as if they were slipjoints. Such as how would you describe a Montesino cigar, what kind of knife would it be? Pattern? Steel? What scale material, color, and jigged or smooth.

Many have got by in lean times with just that combo.

One of my best friends, a fellow soldier from Kentucky, came from dirt poor roots. Growing up, he helped keep his family fed with an old Remington bolt action .22 and his Case stockman. Worked on everything from small game to deer.

I like a knife to have the whole package...a fixed blade is only as good as the sheath you keep it in, I am a very big fan of baldric carry.

I thought the remake of 3:10 to Yuma was about the best western I've seen made in the last 10 to 15 years. Westerns are my favorite genre, it was the first thing I'd seen for a while that actually felt like a western, and not a contemporary action flick with guys in cowboy hats YMMV.

A couple listed here that I've not seen, like"open Range" will try to see that soon.

"Once Upon A Time In The West" is my all time favorite western. Anyone else like that one?

Otherwise some of my favorites that I can name off the top of my head are "two mules for sister sara", "rio bravo", "El dorado", "Joe Kidd", "pale Rider"
"The Sacketts" "monte Walsh"......

:eek::eek: :thumbup::thumbup: Yeee-Haaaaw! been wondering wha one of those in .45Colt (or even a more time period realistic .44-40) would be like; Just go through watching the first season last night, my Dad got it for Christmas. I couldn't believe it took him till one of the last 3 or 4 episodes to flip the gun Rifleman style... That thing is so short it just begs to be spun!

Hi,

Got up this morning and put on a clean pair of pants and discovered a hole in the pocket when I dropped my Boker Barlow in to it. Went right through and hit the floor.

Now I can't find my little patch kit nor the Wife's sewing box, (she's at work). I do have my dirty pants in the washer. But I'm forced to wait until they are dried. So for the next couple of hours, I'm forced carry one of those new-fangled pocket clip models.

At least I don't feel completely unprepared to face the world.:)

LOL- I had to read this twice for it to sink in what you meant. You have a knife clipped to your pants pocket so it won't slip through the hole in your pocket.

At first, I thought you meant that you had a knife clipped to the waistband of your boxer shorts while you were waiting for your pants to dry! In my defense, I worked night shift last night and just woke up, so my reading comprehension maybe isn't up to speed yet.

On the other hand, I was thinking the other day about when or why a neck knife would be a good idea. It just dawned on me- a neck knife set-up is perfect for nudists!
