I agree, great photo Gary. We met my parents down at the beach and watched the eclipse over the lake. The kids were really into it and asking a lot of questions. We ended up keeping them out later than we anticipated. I explained to their teachers that they might be tired in the morning, but experiencing things is a much better way to learn than hearing about it in the classroom.

Fantastic capture, Gary! I was watching and it was magical:D 300 mm lens?

Thanks Gev! That was taken with a Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS40 camera that I recently picked up and am still learning about. It has a 30x optical zoom that's equivalent to a 35mm camera with a 24mm to 720mm zoom. I was zoomed in pretty good, with the camera on a tripod, so maybe more like 450mm or so. The detail could be better but not so bad for a camera in the "travel zoom" category.

Anyway, that's probably a lot more then you care to hear on the subject! :D

Thanks Cory. I'm sure your kids will have fond memories of the experience! Well done.

Can you guys come round to my house and show me how to set my DVD player?! :D

Up until about 7 or 8 years ago I had separate video and DVD recorders. When one of them gave up the ghost, I decided I would buy a VCR-DVD recorder (I was either drunk or had way too much spare cash on hand), which cost me about 10 times as much as simply buying a DVD/VCR player. I've never even read the instructions :o I keep meaning to pay a teenager to read them for me, and tape the 2 or 3 VHS tapes I have that I might want to keep a copy of (family events and suchlike) :o What a dope! :D

Somewhere I have a bunch of movies copied from tape to DVD with a machine I borrowed from my sister. They'll turn up one day.

Hey guys, does anybody remember a compact post giving the dates when which contractors did the BSA utility knives? I can't find it by searching.
Bearbug has asked me how old his is, and I really don't have much of a clue.

Thanks for the info and I do like all the details! The technology really is astounding in these cameras.

I have a foot locker full of VHS tapes that need conversion, since my VCR gave up the ghost:eek: Well, it plays but it won't rewind the tape.

I always wondered how well those things work:confused:

I had over a thousand VHS tapes at one time! Used to lend them out all over my street! :D I still have quite a few :o When I bought the recorder, I also thought I could copy all my films, but the quality of DVD IS a lot better than VHS, and DVDs cost next to nothing now anyway. Even so, I still hate those adverts they used to have at the start of VHS tapes, telling you how good DVDs are. Why, when you've just purchased a film, would they rub your nose in it so much?! "Hey fool, we just sold you a film on VHS! What an idiot you are, why didn't you buy DVD?!" Of course, now you get similar adverts for all the newer formats

i guess my only choice is to find another VHS player...lol A lot of the films I still have would be so hard to find if not almost impossible. I too used to lend them out...it was kinda fun and I found many at Good Will for a dollar and enjoyed watching them and thinking who would like it.

VHS ,super 8 and even (gaak) Betamax (hey back in the 80s I paid 1200 dollars for a clock. Theres only 3 films available) can be professionally converted to DVD or probably even bluray(?) Its worth it for family vids and they will last a lot longer.
My wife recently rationalised our dvd collection of over 100 films by chucking out the boxes and putting the discs in sleeves in folders. Yes they take up a lot less space but can I find Shogun Assassin ? noope.

And when I say "chucking out" I really mean "putting intio a huge blue plastic bag the size of straw bale and depositing in the middle of the floor of my already cluttered mancave".

Oh my goodness, I remember the Sony Betamax too!

We went out and looked at the moon. It was a cool thing to see! We look at the moon and stars often. That goes for any type of unusual event and everyday skies and weather - day or night.

I tried to get a few amateur photos of the Lunar Eclipse tonight. Here's one that was taken at the maximum eclipse. It was a super clear night and I got this off my deck. Pretty cool. Good night folks.
