I too have the Sharpmaker but have been working on my freehand skills recently. I'm adequate at it but there's plenty of room for improvement.
I read an Amazon review of some Victorinox knife. "I had my old one for years. But it got dull. So I bought another just like it."
I used a stone in the scouts but now I use a spider of sharpmaker a little more idiot proof
Spider of Sharpmaker...That's an old family in the North Riding, isn't it?
This last summer I started convexing the edges of some of my knives. I was surprised at how easy it is to get a very sharp edge. I just took a chunk of 2x4, cut up the thickest mouse pad I could find and glued a piece to each side of the 2x4, and stapled some sandpaper over the mousepad. I used 1000 grit on one side and 2000 on the other. Very effective, very cheap, and super simple to replace the sandpaper when it's used up. Just pop a couple staples and staple a new piece on.
I've found that with this method I don't have to be near as precise with keeping a steady angle.
Sorry was groggy from lack of sleep...

That's watching TV when you should be concentrating on your sharpening Tyler!![]()
I keep meaning to give this a try
I wish I had more time for my hobbies work full time as a apprentice electrician second year I leave my house at 4:30am and get home around 7-8pm. And on the weekends I hunt and fish when I can. Just glad to not be laid off
Those are very long days, but I know what you mean, it's a struggle for most of us these days  At least the hours of darkness will begin to get fewer soon![]()
Can you post some pictures
I keep meaning to give this a try
You'll have to forgive the quick and dirty pictures, but I did my best for 2AM on a Tuesday night. I popped the paper off of one side so that you can see it a little more clearly.
As you can see I wasn't too particular when I was putting the thing together. I mostly stay to the middle, so the fact that the paper and mousepad hang over the edges a little doesn't really bother anything. I slapped the thing together in a couple of minutes figuring that I wouldn't use it more than once or twice, but it's now my go to sharpening system. Once you get the convex established it just takes a couple passes on each side of this and it's ready to strop.
I definitely recommend it. I don't sharpen all of my knives on this, but a good amount of them. I'm switching more and more over to convex as time passes. It's also about a two minute and three dollar investment, so there's not much to lose.![]()
This winter and fall have been weird it just started getting cold today was in he 70s on Christmas, I live in New England and last year we had 3 solid months of snow. I just hope we don't get anymore then this first storm that was more of a dusting

I received a nice message from Trevor Ablett's granddaughter a couple of days after Xmas. As I'd hoped, the family had come across the RIP thread - http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1335519-Trevor-Ablett-RIP - and she wanted to say thank you for the kind comments. She's clearly very proud of her grandad![]()
sigh.
My thinking was that there wasn't much point in having knives if I couldn't sharpen them myself.
How is Scruff these days Jack?Same here, despite it raining since September, the temperatures have been very mild. No snow yet, but who knows what the winter still holds.
ScruffUK, who used to post here, sharpens all his knives like this, and I've been impressed with his edges
