"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I too have the Sharpmaker but have been working on my freehand skills recently. I'm adequate at it but there's plenty of room for improvement.

I can free hand but I just have to pay attention with the sharpmaker I can be doing something else like watching tv or waiting for laundry. The only other system I have is the lanky blade medic which I backpack and hunt with for a emergency edge

I read an Amazon review of some Victorinox knife. "I had my old one for years. But it got dull. So I bought another just like it."

Lol must not of used it much it sad to hear this American culture has shifted from valve to it better to replace the item than buy a new one

This last summer I started convexing the edges of some of my knives. I was surprised at how easy it is to get a very sharp edge. I just took a chunk of 2x4, cut up the thickest mouse pad I could find and glued a piece to each side of the 2x4, and stapled some sandpaper over the mousepad. I used 1000 grit on one side and 2000 on the other. Very effective, very cheap, and super simple to replace the sandpaper when it's used up. Just pop a couple staples and staple a new piece on.

I've found that with this method I don't have to be near as precise with keeping a steady angle.

Sorry was groggy from lack of sleep...

That's watching TV when you should be concentrating on your sharpening Tyler! ;) :D

I keep meaning to give this a try

Those are very long days, but I know what you mean, it's a struggle for most of us these days  At least the hours of darkness will begin to get fewer soon :)

This winter and fall have been weird it just started getting cold today was in he 70s on Christmas, I live in New England and last year we had 3 solid months of snow. I just hope we don't get anymore then this first storm that was more of a dusting

You'll have to forgive the quick and dirty pictures, but I did my best for 2AM on a Tuesday night. I popped the paper off of one side so that you can see it a little more clearly.

As you can see I wasn't too particular when I was putting the thing together. I mostly stay to the middle, so the fact that the paper and mousepad hang over the edges a little doesn't really bother anything. I slapped the thing together in a couple of minutes figuring that I wouldn't use it more than once or twice, but it's now my go to sharpening system. Once you get the convex established it just takes a couple passes on each side of this and it's ready to strop.

I keep meaning to give this a try

I definitely recommend it. I don't sharpen all of my knives on this, but a good amount of them. I'm switching more and more over to convex as time passes. It's also about a two minute and three dollar investment, so there's not much to lose. ;)

Same here, despite it raining since September, the temperatures have been very mild. No snow yet, but who knows what the winter still holds.

ScruffUK, who used to post here, sharpens all his knives like this, and I've been impressed with his edges

I used to use those crummy pull-through sharpeners, which wore the steel away quicker, and didn't really get blades all that sharp. I did some research on different sharpeners and things, and it got a bit overwhelming with all the different types and styles, plus some are rather expensive. I just wanted an inexpensive, yet efficientvway to get a good edge on any of my knives. So after emailing jackknife about his technique, and watching the video, I started learning to use simple stones. I forget how long that's been now... Maybe a couple years. I would now say I can get a decent edge on my knives, although I don't have any so-called super steels, which is fine by me. My thinking was that there wasn't much point in having knives if I couldn't sharpen them myself.
