Fantastic Barlow Tyler, really something to treasure

Wow Jack! Incredible.

I hope we haven't lost any members in the recent weather south and west.

I have a cousin in York, but I think he's ok- a couple to a few blocks from the River Ouse, and next-door to the minster, which I should think would be on high ground.

They are used to flooding in York Jer, but they've had it bad this time. Hope your cousin is OK

I often wonder what the phrase "DO NOT ENTER FLOOD WATERS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES" (As issued by emergency authorities to warn people of the danger ) Actually means -because whenever I see a picture of flooded streets I see somebody in the water.
Down the road from my place a few years ago the Creek transformed from a sluggish green trickle to a turbulent brown frothing monster. A couple of the local boys thought it would be good fun to ride boogie boards down and under the road bridge emerging downstream somewhere. . A crowd had gathered to watch the rising waters but not one person had the brains to tell them to stop.
Until I drove past and saw them and told them to get out. The water was almost up to the underside of the road bridge and moving incredibly fast. It's not the water so much as the debris, logs, dead cows, big rocks and such that will get you.
Hope everyone is safe.

It's incredible how stupid some people can be Meako. I was just reading in one of the reports here that local fire crews had issued a warning saying that 'a severe flood warning means that lives are in danger, not 'come and have a look'!'

I gave someone a quick tow. I stopped. Our friends stood and watched as the other car crumpled my bumper.

Eisenstein said, "Two things are infinite. The universe and human stupidity. I'm not quite certain about the universe."

Prayers said for all of those people caught in high winds, high water, snow, ice, horrific storms, etc.

Losing your home and business is horrible! Dealing with damage is horrible too.

Dealing with severe injuries and loss of life is even worse in my opinion.

Stay safe, dry and warm.

Cate

Thanks, Jack. I haven't heard anything about the Minster being flooded, and my cousin is apparently right across the street from the Minster's gate, so fingers crossed. Anyway, it's a civilised country and I'm sure he's fine.

Now there's an emergency alert. That's just right for the Serpent Ships to come a-raiding.

I was reading this list of '200 things to get rid of' tonight, and one of them struck me as a bit funny, and a bit ridiculous. '189. Dull or duplicate pocket knives'. First off, if a knife is dull, why would you throw it away? That seems pretty wasteful to me. I suppose there are people that actually would do that, though. Second, duplicates... Man, where would we be without duplicate (or multiple) pocket knives?
I can understand the need to declutter... But just one knife? Don't know if I could do it... What if it gets lost, or breaks, or someone I know needs one and doesn't have one, or...
Maybe I've lost it. :-p

you would be shocked at how the number of folks who post in General who flat out say they don't know how to sharpen a knife.
Some say they send their knives out for sharpening.

The flooding is unprecedented, but it's important to get things into perspective, we're not talking about New Orleans. There are a lot of flooded homes, but few if any fatalities. York has two large rivers, the Ouse and the Foss, and the area around the Foss is usually protected by a flood barrier. This time though, the flood barrier was overwhelmed, and the gates opened prior to it collapsing, so the flooding in that area was not only unexpected, but sudden. Sad to see so many old bridges washed away, including the bridge in Tadcaster, dating to 1700, which some may remember from when Earl visited me. The last time the bridge there was destroyed was during the English Civil War!

Some more pics here - http://metro.co.uk/2015/12/28/in-pi...ed-by-floods-in-the-north-of-england-5587173/ - More rain and another storm on the way.

They could make a fortune from the York Viking tourist trade! ;)

I don't know how to sharpen knives. :D:o

I've tried on and off over the years, and never had much luck. I know it's a skill I could develop, but it's never particularly interested me. Maybe it should? Maybe, much like traditional knives themselves didn't interest me until a year ago, it'll appeal to me down the road? I don't know.

For the time being, at least, when I need a knife sharpened I take it to a professional sharpener. He does great work, and I don't mess up a knife I love. Win-win!

Not that hard to pick it up, Dadpool. Just takes a little reading and a little practice. Some good info in the Maintenance, Tinkering, and Embellishment forum here.

I've found that I enjoy using traditional stones with traditional knives - some Arkansas soft and hard stones with a little honing oil handle most of it, old leather belt for a strop. Recently picked up a Norton combo India stone and combo Crystolon stone for speedier reprofiling (pesky Queen D2).

Though once you know what you're doing, bottom of a ceramic mug and some cardboard for a strop can keep a working edge forever.

I used a stone in the scouts but now I use a Spyderco sharpmaker a little more idiot proof

Fixed.

I likewise used to freehand it, but now use a Sharpmaker. Do some reading in the Maintenance forum. Lots of learning available there.

I only free hand my larger fixed blade I use for hunting . I want to get a better system even more idiot proof like a edge pro apex
