"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Been a few days since I've caught up on this thread. I really enjoyed the discussion about sharpening. I admit, I used to take all of my knives to someone else to have them sharpened. When I lived in Arkansas, I used to take them to AG Russell's. After we moved out to Arizona, and I couldn't find a place nearby, I decided to try my hand at freehand sharpening. I bought a couple Arkansas stones (I admit, I may have been drawn to them initially because I'm from Arkansas :)) and after some trial and error on cheap knives I didn't care too much about, I got to where I could do a serviceable sharpening job - not great, but it would cut. The problem I had with the Arkansas stones was that some knives seemed easy to sharpen (carbon Opinels, for example), but there were other knives that I could never seem to get sharp.

Recently I bought a couple DMT Dia-Sharp continuous surface bench stones, and I've been really impressed. They just seem easier (and much faster) to me. I still wouldn't say that I'm "great" at sharpening, and some days seem to go better than others, but I feel like I'm improving. The biggest problem I've had with the diamond stones is making sure I don't over-sharpen. I got a sheepsfoot #25 recently on which the edge wasn't perfectly straight (curved up ever so slightly at the tip) and in trying to straighten it out, I ended up sharpening it so much that the little notch between the tang and the edge was completely gone (admittedly, it was a very small notch to begin with compared to most GECs, but still... when I realized it, I was a bit frustrated).

(Also, if there's a proper term for that notch, please enlighten me.)

RobertJ1, sorry to hear about your break-in, man. That's terrible. :(

Barrett, That little notch is called the choil.

Well New Years Eve 2015 has been a complete disaster. I came home from work tonight to find that my place has been broken into. My coins and knives are gone aside from my two that I had with me today. The money I had put aside to get a new knife was taken. My watches etc. I have no insurance here as I am renting and don't pay rent due to an agreement with the land owner. What an awesome day. Hope all you have a better holiday.

Time to start all over again on my slipjoint collection. Atleast I still have one.

Robertj1

your stories( and there are many hints of bad things that you have quoted )- are quite concerning is all I will say at this moment.

I didn't want to write what I was thinking but the bait has been placed all over the forum it seems...glad you're pointing it out Campbell that you have the same suspicions as myself. Hope we're wrong!

I didn't post what happened yesterday with any intentions of anything. I was simply telling of what happened on my crap day yesterday. I'm sorry that many of you may think that I have or had different intentions while posting what I had. I'm not looking for charity or anything. I have full intentions on replacing my own stuff. I just had a bad day yesterday and thought I'd share it. Sorry to alarm anyone.

Aside from that...I took a few minutes this afternoon to start on my second whittling project. I'm trying the classic "ball in cage" project. So far it is seeming to be much more difficult than simply carving out an archaic owl lol. We shall see how this one goes. I'm thinking rounding the ball out will be tough. Here's the start...not much to look at yet but maybe you get the idea.

Thanks btb01. It sucks but all I can do is just move forward. I'm considering putting up a small camera or two that I can check with my phone as well as looking into some sort of alarm system. Won't do me much good for anything like ADT or whatever it's called as I live way out in the sticks. I'm close to a lot of dirt bike trails and off road trails which is how I'm sure they found my place. Everyday when I'm home I can see the trucks and dirtbikes/quad runners go by.

Nobody likes to see another forum member burgled or robbed Robert. When new members start posting here they are always met in a friendly manner by the generous warm-hearted folk that frequent this place regularly. But people will judge you by the posts you make here, and your own posting history prior to today is one which would make a lot of people suspicious.

Beautiful Ranger. I've been wanting a 112 or 110 ever since my Grandpa showed me his. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get it when he passed because my family members were jealous and wouldn't let me have anything at all to remember him by. I'm still wanting one for sure.

Such a fantastic pattern. I've always loved the Grinling Whittler...now if I could only be lucky enough to get my hands on one.

Good grief...all the good ones end up on here when I'm broke lol. I want that Seahorse soo badly. But alas payday is not yet here.

I would however I have to wait for my bank to get situated. My card is currently not working so until then I have to find one locally or find some other avenue.

This is hogwash...I have a few stores around me that carry Case and I went on a hunting spree to track down a CV Peanut on Saturday. Not a single store near me carries anything but the brown delrin SS peanut. So wanting a peanut in CV will just be a dream of mine until one of these places gets one in. I asked if they could order one for me and they said that they just get what the distributor sends them. Lame! I really want a CV peanut now...Bad enough that I could give a body part for one.

All the good knives come up when I dont have the cash lol. Beautiful knife!

Wish I had the cash. Very nice knife. Perfect for EDC.

If the Alox is still available when I get paid I'll take it.

Hey folks I am looking for a GEC #77 (Northfield) Medium Barlow in Sawcut Red Bone. Spear or Sheepfoot doesn't matter. Let me know if you may have one you'd care to part with. Thanks!

:love-struck:

:love-struck: Drool! I want one soo bad

My friend you are a lucky gentleman lol. I hope that one day I can find the great generosity of this wonderful forum. I have never been a part of a more wonderful forum.

I am so happy for you Tyler...the NF Barlow is one of my grails. More so than the TC lol

Rev you are a stand-up gentleman! Wish I had a good Christmas like this lol. Congrats Tyler. Now someone find me a Chestnut CV Case SBJ haha.

Congrats! Now I just wish I could find my grail haha.

Hello all,

I am currently looking for a Case SBJ in Chestnut & CV if you have one you could part with. Please let me know as this is one of my grails. Thank you all! .

Still trying to track down a Case Chestnut SBJ...still no luck anywhere

Just gift it to me haha...honestly I would put it up for around $50-$75. It's a specialty knife that will appeal to some but not most.

I would've gladly accepted that 23 as a gift lol

God I wish I could afford this specimen right now. Such a gorgeous piece of cutlery.

Congrats on your new Grinling Whittler Bob. I myself have been having a hard time tracking one down as well. Someday I will find one...I hope

I wish I had the scratch for that Case but alas my 7 mo daughter took up all my last money for Christmas this year. Good looking knife!

You've now made several posts about your burglary and the loss of a particular knife in the Barlow thread:

As some of you may have read in the off topic forum, I was broken into yesterday while at work and lost my knives aside from the two I was carrying. I lost my coin collection as well as some other stuff that just didn't mean as much to me as my knives. Unfortunately I lost my Northfield 77 Barlow Single Sheepfoot in African Blackwood (Ebony). She was pretty beaten up but still a good knife. I was currently in the process of trying to track down my Grail to replace her for use and just retire the ol black handled beauty. I'm hoping to be able to get my hands on a 77 2 Blade in Old Red Sawcut Bone but only time will tell. You never think much about stuff like this until it happens to you.

And then there is your prior (prior to today) VM exchange with Bob, a man who I think it's fair to say, probably has his hands full at the moment: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/converse.php?u=442259&u2=396722

You can take this advice or leave it, but if you want to win some respect around here, and allay the suspicions being raised about you, please alter the way you post

I understand where you are coming from Jack however I never thought that by me expressing how I'd like to get a certain item in my collection that I've ever alerted anyone. Sorry for posting with such enthusiasm. I will no longer post anything that has anything to do with my like and wish for any particular item. My comments will now only reflect the niceness of an item or something of the like. I have also explained to everyone that wanted to help me that it was never my intention. Sorry to alarm anyone. Maybe I'll just remove myself from the forum if it will continue to be such an issue.

I am currently in the process of removing my posts as well as as not to alert anyone else. Never thought that having enthusiasm and talking about my own want of getting certain things in my collection would have caused such suspicion. Sorry to all.

Well the posts speak for themselves Robert - or did. I don't think it's your enthusiasm that's been the issue. We generally post about knives here - the knives themselves, not the mechanics of buying knives, or the inability to buy knives due to our poor finances. As I said above, you're free to take my advice or leave it

Sorry to hear about your loss Robert. Our home was broken into several years ago. Fortunately nothing of value was taken as the thief was after drugs and was not interested in anything else; however it does affect one's sense of security. Unfortunately this place is not a court of law and if you are accused of something, whether or not you are guilty, there is no evidence and a trial but only opinions which may or may not be accurate. All the best in the New Year.

Ok all of my posts saying anything to the effect of wishing to find or get a particular knife have been deleted, posts saying anything regarding not having the cash currently have been deleted or edited, WTB posts have been closed and edited and any remaining posts have been edited to express congratulations or people's fine choices in particular items. Now back to our regularly scheduled programming.
