"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Carl,

My husband and I pray that you and your family are okay down there in Texas with all of the horrible storms.

I hope that everyone else who is hurt from these storms will recover in the near future too.

Take care.

Cate

Thank you, Cate, all's well down here in Georgetown. A few rainy days with overcast but calm. The inlays and us, and Pearl The Wonder Corgi are just fine. Settling in to the house, now all we have to do is remember what boxes are what. But the coffee maker is up and running so all's well!

Personally I love the comments on quoted pics and appreciate the time it takes to address each pic and leave a comment. To me it's kinda like show and tell and you can't have the show without the tell. ;)

Me too, that thread, along with this one, is the life and soul of the forum in my opinion, and without the comments it would be an extremely boring place. I really dislike the attempts to stifle the conversation there. Whenever this subject comes up it has a corrosive effect on the thread :thumbdn:

Glad things are going OK Carl :) When are you getting your first stetson?! :D ;)

I always enjoy GT's posts. He always puts a little extra into his responses to everyone's pics and makes it amusing. I hope he continues his style of posts.:cool::D

Ted and anyone else who reads this. Frank and I posted at length in this thread. Neither Frank nor I will be pestering anyone about their multi quoting and commenting habits. If you feel like editing something that might be extraneous to your response, have at it, some members with a less then optimal internet connection will probably appreciate it.

It was posted in the guidelines as a request and that's all it is. In fact that post in the guidelines is now almost 7 years old. I expect that many more folks have a speedier internet connection then they had 7 years ago.

I know it's a real chore to try and edit when using a smartphone or tablet. At least it's a real chore for me. I avoid it at all costs. Some folks rely on a smartphone or tablet as their primary device.

So what's everyone's New Years resolution? I'm always trying to shed a few pounds so I'll continue to do that via diet and exercise. It's not a health issue, I'm not really overweight by much for a 65 year old man. More of a personal goal and the attempt to stay as healthy as I can for as long as I can.

I also plan on developing a database to catalog my knives. I figure I'll include photos, info on maker or manufacturer, steel, covers, dates and maybe what I originally paid for them. I'm not planning on checking out anytime soon but you never know. I'm sure my family will appreciate having that info so they can make some decisions when the time comes.

I've told my sons to load me and all my knives into whatever I'm driving when the time comes and drop the whole thing in a hole in the ground. I don't think they'll follow my wishes though.

just got some bad news from the doctor, well bad is dramatic. a little high cholesterol, and elevated liver enzymes. need to go to the gym more and less drinking for me, and less bad foods

Sounds like a good idea. I'm guessing your collection is significantly larger than mine, but I had been thinking about doing something similar recently (at least keeping a spreadsheet of what I paid for knives for future reference). I figured it would probably be a good idea to get started now while I can still remember or easily look up what I paid for things, before my collection gets bigger.

My resolution is to get well enough to attend GEC's Rendezvous '16. :D

Bob, that sounds like a great resolution! Best of luck!

Not if I have anything to do with it. There's a certain Burt Foster with "owls" in the handle that you won't miss in your hole!

Happy New Year, y'all. :)

I don't really do resolutions but my plans this year are to only spend $100 or less per month on knives. I guess that eliminates customs, keeps me checking the exchange and gets me back to buying old knives. Might be fun to see what I can score in good condition.

Has anyone else been having trouble with the site? I've been getting Error 524 time-outs, and was even logged-out. Been trying to post here for the past hour or so

OK that made me laugh, in spite of the fact that we've got company invading my peace and quiet shortly!
Is this the one? That's some crazy California Buckeye Burl. Depending on the time of day and if I've imbibed the images seem to change. I have definitely seen an owl though!

Happy New Year Sarah!

I missed last years and was really bummed. I'll do my best to make it in 2016. The prospect of meeting you and shaking your hand will be added motivation for me, Bob. We're all rootin' and prayin' for you.
