"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Good news about traditional knives is that there are options to fit everyone's budget. I only have a couple of Rough Rider knives but they are excellent knives, and were both less than $10 each. If that brand were all I could afford, I'd be well served by them. Buck has some affordable options and there are some bargains on some of the Case knives.

Sorry to hear about the break-in. Our house was broken into two years in a row, in 2010 and 2011, almost a year apart to the day. We lost a fair bit the first time. They didn't have much to steal the second time. Such is life, you go on as best you can.

I completely agree John. Most of my 25 or so knives taken weren't of anything too valuable. I only had a small handful that were a little higher priced but not terribly expensive that meant a lot to me. I used them mainly for carving and whittling. I will be back on my feet once my finances get back in order. It was just a rough end to the year for me is all. Not a big deal. Thank you for your concerns.

I'm back.... wait where am I? Oh for a second I thought I was somewhere else  I've been away for awhile will you have me back? :o

Aside from that...I took a few minutes this afternoon to start on my second whittling project. I'm trying the classic "ball in cage" project. So far it is seeming to be much more difficult than simply carving out an archaic owl lol. We shall see how this one goes. I'm thinking rounding the ball out will be tough. Here's the start...not much to look at yet but maybe you get the idea.

Reminds me of mine.

As far as multi quoting I agree that doing it excessively without filtering redundant, irrelevant and unrelated pics and text can get annoying. That being said I don't see a lot of it here. This is the friendliest most down to earth safest place on BFC. I have always been welcomed even after being MIA or off world for extended periods of time and I like many here welcome all with open arms like the folks on the Porch have always done for me.

Frank I know more than most what a tough job the mods have and appreciate the time and effort you give up for us, I just wanted let you know your efforts don't go unappreciated as you well know most here feel the same way.

I oughta take up whittling. It would give me something to actually use my pocket knives on.

Very nice...hopefully mine comes out that nice.

It's a great deal of fun. But beware of the pain that comes from pushing with your thumb on the back of the blade until you build up the necessary calluses lol

Has anyone done the impossible joint?
One cube; white wood on the bottom, black wood on top, dove tail joints all around?
It's a classic.

No I haven't...sounds fun. I'm going to have to look into that one for sure. Maybe a future project?

Question please.

Is there a 'Thank You' button that I am missing here so we can thank a person for their beautiful picture or pictures and for a wonderful post or story?

Do you want us to only thank a person if we have a LOT to say in a thank you post to them instead of just saying, "Sweet!" or "You have a beautiful knife! Thank you for sharing."?

Do you want the 'Thank You' to be Long or Short here in this section?

Do you want us to NOT quote someone with their words with NONE of their pictures when we respond to them now?

Okay.

If some of us, including me, have quoted an entire post with a whole BUNCH of pictures and words made by the ORIGINAL POSTER with our response to them and a heart felt thank you be it long or short... I apologize if I screwed up in doing that.

I will delete any OP's picture from my response to them for sharing their beautiful pictures in this TOP section and BELOW in the other part of the Traditional Knife section In The Future.

Either way, I LOVE the pictures that so many of you put up here in this top section and below in the Traditional Section.

I love the pretty knife pictures posted in the GD area, in other sections including the Axe section and in the BUCK knife section too.

I love the knife descriptions. I love the good stories. I like it when someone explains what something is 'knife wise' to the rest of the forum and especially to Newbies.

Maybe there should be a Thank You button.

Happy New Year!

Cate

Carl,

My husband and I pray that you and your family are okay down there in Texas with all of the horrible storms.

I hope that everyone else who is hurt from these storms will recover in the near future too.

Take care.

No worries, Cate.
There's "gotta haves" and "nice to haves".

Slimming down posts by not including all the pics in the post qualifies as a "nice to have".

The "gotta have" is, we gotta have you posting.;)

^^^

Sometimes I quote the entire post and other times I don't do that but I will try to watch how I do this.

I am not computer whiz which most of you can tell!

I can't say it any better, Cate!

I don't post or quote much, but with recent conversations it will probably be limited to reading. You would probably have felt the same if I posted more, because I've had many of the same thoughts as RobertJ1, just never commented.

Frank, Gary, are folks getting the wrong idea? I think they're afraid to post and quote. Grump01, Catherine, it's not the quoting that's the problem it's the 10 pictures that were quoted that were also in the post directly above it. On phones it's hard to edit out the pics or the unnecessary commentary but a little discretionary editing of quoted posts goes a long way in keeping the flow (as laidback as it is) moving forward smoothly.

Personally I love the comments on quoted pics and appreciate the time it takes to address each pic and leave a comment. To me it's kinda like show and tell and you can't have the show without the tell. ;)
