Well now, that is a problem in itself as the "Get Started Guide" can't be read even with a magnifying glass. I'll just keep tapping here and there until my niece shows up.

You might try Googling up the make and model. A lot of times the on-line help manual is a LOT more useful than the printed version. You will likely also find other sources on line. My first resource for for anything new is the web.

Beautiful spot Leghog. Looks like there might be trout in that stream.

Very nice pictures, leghog. Thanks for sharing them. There's nothing quite like an old covered bridge. The curvature of that one makes it especially cool.

Thats a wonderful and interesting photo leghog.
History fascinates me and its great that structures like the bridge are maintained. Also because I dare you to walk across at night ....I can hear the owl and the bullfrogs croaking 'legabod..legabodd..' then the creepy hoof steps which stop when you turn around to peer into the misty darkness.

I love the look of these old covered bridges. We don't have them here. How old is that one Leghog? Is there a specific reason WHY the sides are covered?

Leghog-that bridge was recently featured on a Maryland Outdoors or is it Outdoors Maryland show. Produced by Maryland Public Broadcast System (PBS). The show covered-covered bridges in MD, PA, Va & WV. You should be able to watch it from their website.

The span is 100 feet. It's sided for the same reason it's covered - to proctect the structural members/trusses from weather

Most atmospheric picture leghog. The landscape looks very similar to many places in Europe, a nice winter shot with a promising looking stream running through it....

Great photos Leghog. I really like old bridges and that is a beaut. Thanks for posting.

Intuitive

1. known automatically: known directly and instinctively, without being discovered or consciously perceived
2. knowing by instinct: knowing things instinctively

That's what they (whoever they are) say about these new Android tablets/phones and new OS'. All it says to me is that evidently, I am not an intuitive person.

They sold me a new tablet and only when I got it home did I find out that I had to be intuitive in order to use it. I guess I'll have to wait for my niece to come out from town to show me what to do with it. Until then, I'll just keep tapping different keys here and there just to see what happens.

Don't feel bad Ed, I'm fighting with a new tablet myself today.

LOL...it seems that a bunch of us are dealing with similar frustrations. I picked up my first smartphone a month or so back. I fought and fought, and tried to put it off as long as I could, but had to give in at the end when my old cell phone finally died as it refused to hold a charge.

This is the literature that came with my new phone. No how-to-booklet, it's mere CYA paperwork. They must really believe that these things are intuitive.

I'm familiar enough with smartphones, as my wife was an early adopter when she picked up the original IPhone. The problem is, I already have a love/hate relationship with cell phones in their basic form. I see them as a technological tether. Being easy to contact 24 hours a day, anywhere and everywhere. Who says that's a good thing? And now phones have expanded capabilities? In addition to having to deal with phone calls, now I have to add urgent emails and their ilk? Ugh...

(I think I'm going to keep my new phone on vibrate, just as I have every single one I've owned since 2005...hahaha)

The worst part is that they no longer make phones in reasonable sizes. The industry has wholeheartedly embraced the bigger is better mentality. My new phone measures ~ 6" x 3". It literally feels like I'm carrying a brick. Makes my #73 seem dainty in comparison.

I'm struggling to deal with the added burden. I think I have to adjust my thinking. This thing isn't a phone, it's a mini-computer that just happens to make calls. Time for me to go back to my youth and release my inner geek. Smartphones are the communicator, PADD, and tricorder made real.

I find a heavy dose of "Oh, sorry, left the phone in the car" tends to readjust people's expectations. :D

Sometimes I feel as if I'm from another planet. A week after I got this thing I went to a family get together to celebrate my cousin's engagement. My family has teased me in the past about carrying an "antique", so they were very surprised to see me with a smartphone. After welcoming me to this decade, they asked me what my favorite app is. I think they expected me to say Facebook or some game. They were dumbstruck when I mentioned Kindle...hahaha. I don't do social media and the only games I have are for my daughter.

I released my inner geek about 20 years ago (with a Psion) and have had some kind of "portable computer" in my pocket ever since. My iPhone is only the latest iteration. I use it and don't let it use me. No Facebook, twitter or other social media - wait, except the porch here.

My favorite apps are Kindle, Audible and Yahtzee. As I said, the iPhone is for me, not for others. If I don't want to talk or text right now, I don't.

My wife, however; is purely a flip phone person.

Christian,
welcome to the 21st century :D just kidding.
To me a smartphone is a tool. Just like a knife, or anything else. It's useful and makes sense just as long as the good things it brings are more than the bad ones. I use my smartphone alot for emails, and chats can be incredibly useful. My social networking activity is close to zero...aside from the porch ;)
Just a word of advice. Don't let others convince you that things are intuitive. Ask few questions to those who can help you, and fiddle with it (on your own!) for a while. Sooner or later you will own your own phone :)

Thanks guys. It's actually not that bad. Tweaking this thing is an ongoing process as I discover little by little what apps I actually have a use for. I've already disabled a lot of the bloatware, and changed some of the settings to optimize my user experience. And if I'm having trouble figuring it out, Chrome is right there to help me in my search for a solution. Perhaps that's what's most incredible about this whole thing -- this device gives me instant access to a vast store of mankind's accumulated knowledge.

It's even good for an occasional laugh. My daughter and I spent an entire hour asking OK Google ridiculous questions. Things like, "why do some people eat their boogers?"

As to intuitive, I had a small lesson in humility the other day. I've spent a bit of time the past few weeks figuring this thing out. Nothing too bad, and I was explaining some of the features to my mother-in-law who also has an Android. She then asked me to help with her phone, so my chest puffed up with pride. Big whoop. We watched as my little girl, all of six years old, proceeded to take my newly customized phone and immediately start using it. She had no difficulty at all finding the apps she used, despite the vastly different layout. I was reminded of a recent tv commercial that likened grandkids to free tech support...lol.

You guys are kill in' me . Sounds just like I feel about my Samsung . The only App I use is Weatherbug . Don't text , almost never get a call , almost never make a call . It is usually on the kitchen counter . If I have a knife reserved at CK , I might carry it to check E-Mails when the time is drawing close. I am not a young man anymore and have learned all I want to unless it involves something I like.

Harry
