"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

So much for mowing the back 40. At least until mama comes back and collects her little one.

Cool! A lovely little fawn!
Something I've never encountered in my inner city lawn!

I've only once seen a fawn that age in the wild. My wife and I were on an impromptu road trip where we flipped a coin to determine whether we were heading north or south. South won and we decided to head from the Bay Area towards Los Angeles and camp in the national forest north of there. We took the slow, scenic route following Highway 1 down the coast. In a particularly winding and deserted stretch of road we came upon a little fawn that was bounding down the road, Pepé Le Pew style. Fortunately there was plenty of time to slow down and we ended up following it for maybe 100 yards before it decided to leave the pavement. It was one of those wonderful, unexpected experiences that we still talk about from time to time. Thanks for jogging that memory, Gary!

Thanks guys. I really love seeing the wildlife. We're lucky to be somewhere that allows us to look out our windows and see all manner of critters.

We see fawns every year but usually not that young. Mama finally showed up, and after a quick lunch for the little one, they wandered back into the woods. I got to finish my mowing.

:thumbdn: I'm so angry against me! I used to collect Smiths watches and sell one from time totime to raise money to get a new knife. Yesterday I went to the Post office to send a parcel to GB with a watch inside and another enveloppe for a downtown address.
I don't know how I could do it, but I switched the stamps from the machine and send the enveloppe with the international tracking! :grumpy:
I think my poor buyer will have to fork some money to pay the difference (and there is a big one!) of price. Of course I'll won't let him being charged, but I wonder, Doctor, am I getting that senile?

Thanks for the compliments! I take a lot of pictures and once in awhile I get a good one. Back in the day, prior to digital photography, I spent a fortune on film and processing. My dad and I had a darkroom for many years.

The camera is a compact digital with a 30x zoom and was at max or close to it. I was using auto focus because I figured she wasn't going to pose for long. I'm going to guess that I was about 30 yards away from the doe. The focus could have been better, but sometimes you just have to take what you can get.

Jolipapa around here we call it (old timers disease). :D

Jack someday you need to come to WNC to see wildlife. Over the years from my deck I have saw Whitetail Deer, Black Bear, Fox, Raccoon, Possum, Rabbit, Squirrel, Turkey, Groundhog, Geese, Duck, Hawk, Eagle, Hummingbird and all kinds of other birds. It's a great place to live but I have never saw a Sasquatch.:D I do however live on the side of a mountain with a lot of woods that lends itsself to habitat for wildlife.

Ah yes quite the set up! very good job with out scaring the deer away. my father is very into photography and still has his old cameras. he bought most of his gear with him when we came to America. In fact he still has his old Nikon's with almost every piece of lens attachment possible. He brought most of it for my college graduation pictures but I was being a brat cause I hate the heat and it was a blistering summer day. Actually tried to sell one of his old cameras while we were in Japan to fund his new Canon 5D. Like you tho, he laments the change to digital even though its the way things are going. Film is incredibly expensive for no reason nowadays. he used to tell me about his darkroom set up and about the thermometer i would borrow for science projects in elementary school. Do you go on scenic routes sometimes to take pictures? Id love to share some of his wildlife snaps, but I do wonder about the hosting qualities, those pictures are like 16mb!

hey randy, would love to! isnt UNC Chapel Hill about to let out for summer? ;) seriously though, that sounds like a great camping trip location

Yes but she's staying there she has moved in with her boyfriend I can't stand. He's a weirdo jerk that looks just like Drop Dead Fred. :D Seriously I try to be nice but I just can't bring myself to like him. His comment on my knife display's in my living room was "Oh my God are you one of those violent Hillbillies!" I explained to him that he must be a girl except I used a different noun and he would do well to return to the rock he crawled out from under.
