"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

After two days of a MIA opinel, i knew it was in the laundry. Finding it in the just finished washer, I didn't bother taking it out, just put it in the dryer.
A little bit of rust on the carbon blade, that i swiped off with 1000 grit paper, but opening was just as smooth as before.

Plus it's clean! [emoji14]

Eegads! It didn't melt!? And it's not even H1 steel! ;)

Seriously, though, my we patinaed Opinel carbon no. 8 is my go-to food-prep knife when travelling.

My wife treats it EXACTLY like she would any stainless knife we have in our kitchen: Cut something, toss in the sink full of dirty dishes, rinse off, repeat.

My 8 is my go to dirty and dangerous knife. Although after removing patina yesterday it cut up some wonderful pork slabs.

Jolipapa.
I always like those steam train rides where all the people are leaning out the windows laughing and waving. They never show them alighting at the end because their faces are covered in soot and smoky grit has entered every crevice in their clothes and bodies.
There is a journey down here that comes down the illawarra escarpment .The Cockatoo Run.They hand out safety glasses. Also use diesels during bushfire season. Not as romantic but safer.

We had a president (a short man) that once said that if you don't have a Rolex at 50, your just a loser. :D

You also had another president (L'Oncle) who reputedly never wore a watch of any kind :D Loser is a word much favoured by little people of all kinds:rolleyes:

"If you don't have a Traditional Knife at 50, you're just losing out, massively"

Thanks, Will

ooo at the end of the day its just a watch tho. heck a timex might tell time even better. Get all sorts of folks in the clinic. One man told me about how he scored a rolex at an estate sale only to find out it was a stolen rolex and its serial was etched out. Another man came in with a iced out rolex daydate with a matching iced out pinky ring. Yet another came in today, a doctor with his watch unclasped. Turns out he snagged his two tone date just on a door knob and messed up the bracelet. Its just a watch, no big deal. I suppose the nicest watch that ever passed by the clinic mustved been a Patek

:D Don't forget that commercial speed was up to 100mph on the French portion! That was the time cows were adjusting their watches on the passing of the trains. :D

His neighbours in the cemetary are complaining because he does not stop drilling these days! :D

Oh! Last friday I was worried because I had interverted stamps on letter and parcel. Yesterday I've been told the parcel arrived to his recipient. :)
This was inside, a simple 7 jewels Empire Smiths ticking very accurately

Not much different than many knife or blade steel or handle material or shield or what have you discussions around these parts of the internet.

definitely, parachrome hair spring vs the previous gen. some people will say the latest and greatest is best, but even in rolex tech you dont want to be the first to adopt some times. My favorite model had quite some issues when rolex switched over to the new tech. the GMT function would fail during time changing and it would have to go in. I was only a college kid when they ceased production, so now all the bugs have been hashed out.

Best movements Rolex made were the 15XX and 30XX series and they were introduced about 50 and 30 years ago respectively.

That's a handsome watch.
Thank you! I sold her to buy a knife, my interest is now focused on the knives. I'll just keep a very small number of watches, to offer to my grand children later. I'll love to see them wear them. I do the same with my sodbusters. When they come to my home they choose one (my children also), that they use but will stay at my home. They 'll take it when I'm gone! :) A way to have them near me, not simply in pictures! :D

that is indeed, the workhorses. shame they aint pretty to look at tho, very rare to see display case backs for rolex, unless custom made. Ive been flirting with the idea of a datejust, maybe two tone. Ill probably never have my grandfather's watch, but supposedly he had a datejust

Teenagers taste buds never cease to amaze me. My girls are of course out of school for the summer and both are off of work today so they asked (begged) for me to cook them breakfast. Not an unusual request in it's self but their request was for peach pancakes with whipped cream and fried potatoes and onions. Strange combination to me but as always I obliged them. :D

It's the first one I've ever seen. A Fireball is a very bright meteor. I was sitting in my favorite chair reading when I glanced out the picture window to see a "scifi movie worthy" Fireball flash by. The thing was huge. I've seen meteors and meteor showers before but this made me jump from my chair with a "Holy ---!".

According to the AMS I was one of 114 folks who reported it. I'm glad to know I didn't imagine it...

114 reports about a fireball seen over NH, NY, PA, Ontario, VT, MA, ME, Québec, NJ, MD and RI on Wednesday, June 15th 2016 around 01:29 UT.

Pretty cool!

Here's a '71 Oyster I got from my best friend's estate 12 years ago. He bought it when he graduated university in '73.

The Rolex goes to my son along with the Omega Seamaster my Mom bought Dad in 1956 when they lived in Spain.
