"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

haha! ive been slowly considering the opposite, i love knives, but i love watches as well. i get in a frenzy some times and have been considering selling some to fund a new watch

That means to let quite of lot go!
The choice to me was easy, except high end customs, nice knives are less cheaper than watches in the samecondition. Furthermore Smiths watches all date of the 70s at best and the rate of gone-berserck-after-few-days (hours sometime) of use was tremendous (maybe 3 out of 5:grumpy:). Unless a big hazard, there are much less chances a spring breaks on a knife... or get a true lemon :D
For my last job I used a Cricket, which I'll keep beside family watches and I have my grail Jaeger-Lecoultre on my wrist everyday.

Only one thing impresses me more and thats gotta be steam trains.

Did you see that they are getting one of the original Big Boy's 4-8-8-4 back up and rolling, and plan to tour the country with it to show people what a real train is supposed to look like. I hope they come within 50 miles of me.

And I missed the fireball flash, too many trees around my house to notice much of anything. Although I did have a mamma bear nosing around my birdfeeder a few nights ago.

very classy! Reverso? Master Control? i could never buy a super high end custom for some reason. I almost bought a ferrum forge, passed on the sebenza cause at the end of the day thats still a midtech knife. I have thought about custom traditionals, but I always end up going no way. At best, my most expensive knife is $140-$150. Bar a custom mikov dagger im building, but thats time spent and not cost spent. I definitely need to sell some things, other wise im just an endless horder.

You reminded me of something else that is impressive.
Encountering wild animals living in nature and both of us living to tell the tale.:)

Alas not a top end J-L, a Kryos with chronometer, it was the smallest ever, now it's just a bit too small to check elapsed time without a magnifier!

Jack I don't know which I love most knives or guitars. I recently sold all of my "good knives and a bunch of PA gear to help with funding my latest guitar purchases with the exception of a Tidiout #15 spear point Glennbad is putting stag covers on for me, the S&M Winterbottom Barlow you gave me, a WW11 era Camillus Radio Jack that has had the covers replaced with cocobolo that BigBisquit gave me, and of course my old Barlow my grandfather gave me that I had Glennbad put stag handles on. Other than those I have a few Case knives and some odds and ends mostly old USA made knives but have started buying a few less than $100 knives. I have since, actually just a few days ago sold most of my guitar collection to a friend that owns a music store (he made me an offer I couldn't refuse) including the ones I sold my knife collection to buy and only have a 1983 Les Paul Studio (the first year they made the Studio model) and a 2003 L-4A acoustic with factory pick-up and some inexpensive guitars and bases left in the basement music room. To add insult to injury when my wife saw what I sold the guitar collection for she commandeered the majority of the money for the savings account. Don't ever marry an accountant. I say this to say be absolutely positive before you sell your things to fund other things because once you do their gone and I am absolutely sick over what I have done. Here are the sad remains of my guitar and knife collections.

still better than my guitar gear and stuff! i remember in hs when i thought dude! get a guitar, chicks dig that. you can so play! Three guitar later, 1 acoustic and 2 electrics, 1 violin turns out im not much of a string guy can barely play ode to joy. My harmonica collection just about comes up to $600 actually, which is the instrument ive truly had a passion for. I have definitely spent twice if not triple that on various knives. I still remember when my dad told me not to get an engraving jig for ring making because he learned the old school way and I should too if i was inclined which some days I am, actually just sent another ring with him for casting soon. You can always get more knives :D also found out the more I look at these rolexes, the more im tempted to buy , hope you got your money's worth! what was the guitar collection before this?

It was really quite a sight, Duncan.

I wish! I was far away from a camera and it was only in my line of sight for 2 or 3 seconds max.

well still nice to see! we dont get those cool sights deep in the city, i need to move out

This thread is reminding me of when I had to sell my Alembic Epic 4-string. One of the worst days of my life. I don't even miss my G-K heads as much as I do that bass.

Kind of a sad tale, Randy; sorry to hear you feel so bad about the way things turned out. :(
For what it's worth, I was ecstatic to see that you still have that display of Case chestnut jigged bone knives. I remember your picking those up as one of the first times I noticed this r redden guy and thought, "That guy has good luck and great taste!!" In my opinion, just having that display case full of a "matched set" of knives means you've got a VERY fine knife collection!!:thumbup:

I've been away from the forum for a week or so. We spent a few days in Las Vegas with my brother and his wife. They're moving to the UK next month, so we won't see them again for a while. I was hoping to come back from Vegas with a little cash to spend on some new knives, but no such luck this time.

I had a surprise from France waiting in the mail when we got back home. I mentioned somewhere on here a while back that I collected cigar bands, and Jolipapa sent me several from his father and grandfather, along with a very nice letter. Thank you so much! Or should I say, "Merci!"

Nice Barrett, and good on you JP  Say Barrett, whereabouts are your brother and his wife moving to?

My pleasure! Pa and GrdPa were not really collectors, they just kept things that pleased them (I realize I do the same ). They also kept boxes! :D

Has that changed now that we're supposedly buddy-buddy with Cuba again?

Really would like to get my hands on a box of Romeo y Julietas (not Dominican) without having customs all on my case.
