"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

My son looks just like his mother's father and his mother's brother. Just like them. So much so, when his uncle got married when my son was a little boy and his uncle with new bride came out to visit us in Hawaii for their honeymoon, she confided in my wife that she had at first suspected we were raising her new husband's illegitimate son. Days later in that trip my son mistakenly called his uncle, Dad, and all of Cher's doubts again came to the fore. It was quite a few years before those doubts were completely erased.

Rick Bragg had a nice article in July Southern Living about Southerners and our pocket knives. Read it with a grain of salt, he's not terribly knife savvy.

I was going to say, our British members have some interesting times ahead, talking Brexit.
Maybe it will be fine.

As you know Paul, I share your view, as well as your worries, but this is a political discussion, which some members may take a different view on. I don't think The Porch is the best place to have it

I've got to agree with Jack on this. This is not the place for a political discussion, please.

Strange and surprising times we live in. I wish all the best to our friends in the British Isles.

Rightio. I thought the porch was the one place on BF we could come and air our thoughts. Oh well. Thanks Jack and Gary for pointing the way. :)

I think there are sound reasons to keep political discussion out of The Porch Paul, no matter how strongly we feel about an issue personally, and perhaps precisely for that reason. Hence why I replied to your earlier post privately my friend. I take it as read that our friends in the US, and elsewhere, wish us well in what may be difficult times to come. It's also worth remembering that there's a good chance other UK members have an entirely different view of events

I think all of us could benefit from reading through the forum guidelines from time to time, there's a lot of good sense in there in my opinion, but some parts of them often seem to be ignored.

Political, Economic & Religious Commentary; Offshore Manufacturers & Brands:

This is not the "Political" or "Current Events" sub-forum nor is it the appropriate area for the examination of religious topics, beliefs or proselytizing.
We have many nationalities, faiths and beliefs represented here so please be considerate of the feelings of the other members of our community and keep religious and nationalistic messages and statements out of forum posts.

This forum is not the venue for diatribes on economics, political policies, customs or the governments (and entities) of foreign countries which are the home to various knife manufacturers.
We are a large international community and we want our "virtual living room" to be a comfortable and rewarding place for all to visit and participate in without feeling singled out or harrassed.
Bladeforums has "Political", "Feedback" and "Current Events" sub-forums available for those discussions and any such threads will be closed or moved to the appropriate venue.

Obviously there are many times when political events affect us personally, and it can be difficult to separate the two, but I think the old adage about discussing anything except religion and politics is well worth trying to remember  And of course 'flippers' and 'thumb studs'! :D ;)

When thinking about why we keep political discussions in proper place, I think of a incident that involved famous actor James Stewart and Henry Fonda. The two of them were very well known as the best pf friends for many decades. They lived near each other, went fishing together, their kids were friends.

But one time, and one time only they had a serious argument that actually came to blows. Jimmy and Hank got to a punch out. The reason was politics. Jimmy Stewart was on the conservative side of things while Hank Fonda was a bit more liberal.

Both men were so sorry after their duke out, that they swore never to talk politics again, no matter what. They held their friendship in such high regard they just never talked politics with one another again for the rest of their lives. Sometimes friendship can transcend a lot of things, even politics!

On that note, I sincerely wish our British friends and forum family well in the trying days to come. No matter what happens, I feel they will come through this. Great Britain brought us the steam engine, the industrial revolution, exploration, ocean spanning maritime trade, an empire that the sun never set on, English common law via Blackstone, as well as survived the blitz. Many years from now looking back on this day, it will be just one of the speed bumps in history.

God bless the Queen!

Good story Carl, I'd never heard that before. It's hard not to wonder what Jimmy Stewart and Henry Fonda squaring off against each other would have looked like! Two Angry Men ;) :D

the movie that inspired me to run was Terminator 2 judgment day. According to my friends, I run like the T-1000 when I sprint.

LOL! Fantastic, I hope you have that speed! :D  I rewatched the first Terminator film just the other day, I think it's still my favourite of the series :) The hairstyles have certainly dated though! :D

I'm afraid I meant 'run away from the cinema'! ;) :D A few years ago, I was surprised when one of my daughters asked me to get her Forrest Gump on DVD, telling me that it was her favourite film. Of course, I obliged, but I couldn't help wincing! ;) :D
