"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

There was Windows 8, but apparently Microsoft didn't find it invasive enough so they bumped it to Windows 10.

 windows needs to do a lot of QC on their OS. heard so many horror stories about the windows 10 just crashing once installed. Even my mac is telling me to switch to El Capitain which given how old this thing is, i hesitate. This things like the Falcon for me, ive made a lot of special modifications myself. she wont make .5 past lightspeed tho :D

I upgraded the OS on my iMac last year and it immediately crashed hard. No backwards technology for Apple either. DOA.

I "upgraded" to Win 10. It worked long enough for me to determine that I hated it. It wants to be a cell phone and bring internet content to your desktop. If you use Cortana, you have to use Edge, which I hated. And it wants to charge you for things that were free in Win 7.

When it finally crashed completely, the only way to fix it was to completely wipe the hard drive and perform a clean install. I figured that as long as I was going to do a clean install, I'd load an OS that was stable and was actually designed for a desktop machine. Win 10 isn't either of those. Win 7 is. So now I'm back to Win 7 and very happy.

isnt it sad that "upgrades" seem more of a "downgrade" . i upgraded my father's computer to instantly switch it back because the internet stopped working the second i upgraded to 10. honestly i remember being very happy with XP, even 2000. this is coming from someone whose first computer ran windows 95, then it was upgraded to windows 98. i still have this computer actually. it sits in the garage gathering dust. i think we even got rid of the CRT monitor. it only uses the old keyboard/mouse so its practically useless now. i remember when i upgraded my mac from snow leopard to mountain lion, crashed and lost some specific files. spent 2 hours talking to apple for them to just go well we're sorry about that, never heard of that problem occurring. let us send you this disc that wont help you get your files back but looks like we made the effort. i had graduated from college at the time and lost the free mac microsoft office that college gave at first as a disk then a computer download, which was quite a loss for me.

god awful, had to switch back to windows 7 right away for my father's computer. hes not every techno advanced and just uses it to sort his pictures and for photoshop. but cmon Microsoft, make windows 8 first, dont jump 3 numbers!

Yes, absolutely terrible. Frank, I remember reading your initial report on Windows 10, at the time when I was getting spammed to upgrade myself. Windows 10 is like a virus! :thumbdn: :thumbdn:

this is coming from someone whose first computer ran windows 95,

My first computer was a mainframe, an IBM 360/40.
It looked about like this and I often sat in the operator's chair.

My first home computer was a Z80 machine running CP/M and 64K of RAM. It had a baby word processor, a baby spreadsheet, and a dot matrix printer which would not print descenders. I ran that till the 386 chips came out, then built a machine based on a 286 chip running DOS 3.1.

And Win 10 still sucks.

Once Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated "If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon.

In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release stating: If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics:

For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day.

Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car.

Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull over to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason you would simply accept this.

Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.

Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive - but would run on only five percent of the roads.

The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single "General Protection Fault" warning light.

The airbag system would ask "Are you sure?" before deploying.

Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.

Every time GM introduced a new car, car buyers would have to learn to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.

You'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off.

that happened to my father the other day, except they called him on his cell phone at work. he kept telling them he doesnt have a computer, and then they called him again

Air horn. I need to get one before the scam IRS call.

Funny stuff, JP! :D

Windows 10 is like a virus! :thumbdn: :thumbdn:

Ain't that the truth. I like when it pops up and tells you it's going to upgrade your computer in xx hours (unless you find the tiny words that say, "No thanks.") We had several computers at work that did it randomly when left on overnight. I thankfully avoided it (it did try, but I managed to find all the hoops you have to jump through to tell it "no" for good… I think.) I use a Mac at home; it's not perfect either, but less of a pain than Windows 10.

Leghog back in the day when telemarketers called continuously one of my good friends Jerry kept a referee whistle next to his phone and let them have it when they called. :D

Hope everyone had a great weekend.

As I rebuild my collection one knife I wanted was another custom skinning knife from Blade Forums own GL Drew. Now I usually would go for a drop point but when I saw the profile on this clip I had to have it. Gerry is another amazingly talented knifemaker we have here on our little corner of the internet and a darn good guy to boot. The first knife I bought from Gerry was for my son and since he only lives about 45 mins from me we went to his shop and he a was most accommodating and friendly fellow. This one is mine though and my son can just keep his paws off of it. :D Thank you Gerry I love this knife.
