"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Great pics of the march JP.
I love a bit of pageantry.
as a side note only 2 armies have ever fought the British to a standstill -The Afghans and the Maori.
I don't include the American War of Independence because at that stage the Yanks were mostly of British heritage.:foot:
What is the purpose of the butchers? apron worn by the Legionnaires?

Don't forget Jeanne d'Arc! :D
Images are grabbed from TV.
The leather apron is a reminiscence of the sapers, digging mines, etc., they wear an axe on the shoulder. They are also allowed to have a beard.

Jeanne d Arc now she had a lot at stake:D
Im referring to the time of the British Empire i guess.
Back inJeannes day it was pretty much a part of France as far as royalty and ownership. The language spoke in England would not be understood today.:)

Looks like a great day, Jolipapa. I never saw the top of the Arc before.
I didn't realize Maoris were still using that flat stick with the tongue and face handle. (Can't think of the name.)

Great pictures Jolipapa. I love to see pictures all of you post of the area or events in the area you live, Thanks for posting.

I was visiting in-laws last Friday through Monday and am trying to catch up on various threads now.

I have a $10 Mora that is one of the best food prep knives I have ever owned. We had some left over chicken breast I had grilled and with the help of my Mora turned them into a great chicken salad sandwich. This little Mora is simply outstanding.

Randy, I'm not very interested in fixed blades (I don't have time to open that whole can of worms), but I DO plan to pick up a Mora or two sometime soon. I appreciate your "testimonial".

Randy, I'm not very interested in fixed blades (I don't have time to open that whole can of worms), but the handle of your new knife is splendid! What type of wood is it?

Air horn. I need to get one before the scam IRS call.
Leghog back in the day when telemarketers called continuously one of my good friends Jerry kept a referee whistle next to his phone and let them have it when they called. :D
I used to be able to get telemarketers to hang up on ME by acting like a clueless moron who couldn't stay on topic (no comments about how that wasn't acting ). Probably not an efficient use of time, but it certainly had entertainment value for me and my family! :D

I sliced part of my finger at work last night got home form sr around 12pm
Tyler
That sounds WAY less than ideal, Tyler. :( How are you doing now??

I started working at a new job at a high end furniture shop yesterday and, despite being dead tired from 6am-4pm shifts, I'm happy as can be. This job has a lot of room for me to grow and is really the first big break I've gotten in several years.
...
I might buy some new boots in a few months too, pull over Pecos from Red Wing so i can clean out chips and dust easily throughout the day.
...
Connor
Congrats on the new job, Connor! Sounds like you're liking it so far, and I hope you enjoy it even more as you get used to what's going on at work. 6am-4pm shifts sound fairly intense; do you get some overtime for that? For what it's worth, when I was growing up on a dairy farm, we wore lace-up boots with tops at least 8 inches off the ground and tucked into our pant legs. That was hot in the summer, but we rarely got hay, dust, grain, dirt, etc. in our shoes with that set-up!

10 days after the 4th of july comes the 14th and the big military show
14J-1.jpg

and I can't help thinking to my Grand Pa a century ago in the redoute de Mecheria, a fort in the middle of nowhere, Sahara.
...
14th of july is never a day like all others! Here the drawings for the petty officers' menu (crayfish and St Julien!!!)
...
simple légionnaires had a lighter version
...
this year the honoured guests are Australian and New Zealand (with impresssive Maoris) troops in memory of their help during WWI
...
as always the Legion is the last to come as it walks at a slower pace and do not split at the end of the march.
...
Happy Bastille Day, Jolipapa! Thanks for the excellent pics!

I agree wholeheartedly with Randy. Hanging around The Porch has certainly broadened my horizons in numerous ways!

A monumentous moment.

Someitmes things happen that cause you to take a moment to evaluate what's happening in your life.

I lived most of my life in Maryland. Or as some people call it, The People's Repubik Of Maryland. It wasn't always so, and it was one of those things that it changed subtly over many years. But I was always a bit resentful over the fact that I was being deprived of my full constitutional rights. It bugged me.

Moving to Texas was a change in many ways, no more winter blizzards with a couple feet of heavy wet snow to move. No layering up 10 layers of clothing to go out for a walk when the high temp of the day is going to be 17 degrees. No more state income tax!:D

But today, one of my many "bugs" was fixed. The mail contained an envelope from the Texas Department Of Public Safety. A few weeks ago, Karen and I took our class for the CCw, and summated the paperwork. Zipping open the mail with a nice sharp knife, (Boker 240 pen knife in carbon, for the record) I found a nice color permit with my photo from my drivers license, and the words; License To Carry Handgun.

I sat and contemplated it for a few minutes, then got up and poured a shot of Evan Williams and tossed it down. It is passing strange that my newly adapted state of Texas, of where I have only been a resident of since November 2d of 2015, has shown a trust in me that my home state, that I was born and bred in, lived in for most of my life in and paid taxes in, never did.

Life is strange!

It is strange - and unfortunate that many of us feel the need to carry a firearm as protection against two legged predators. But it's good to have that option without being considered an outlaw. Just be very careful when interacting with law enforcement officers when you're carrying. And never ever let your firearm be out of your direct control.

5KQs, tell us about your fixed blade can of worms. Anything to do with any fb being a proscribed dagger or dirk, except for a hunting knife being carried for that purpose?

OK its Taiaha and heres a link although subtitled of a vid from NZ about this weapon.

Take care.
