"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I was wondering if there is a dedicated thread for traditional knife videos. I found this one today and thought some of you might not have seen it already.

I think the videos can fit just fine within threads centered on their subjects, giving providing information-- visual and spoken-- that still images alone may not capture.

A videos-only thread would likely become cumbersome, with it hard to locate specific subjects/knife patterns within it...? Especially given BF's failing, failed, currently-no-longer-indexing-properly rassnfrassen Search function(s). Grrr.....

Thanks for that useful link, once again.

I hear what you're saying P. Let's just say in the pre internet days when I kept clippings of newspaper and magazine articles and notes of stuff that interested me, I had a lot of folders marked 'Miscellaneous'! :p:rolleyes:

Dude, I have folders on my computer, and browser bookmark folders, labeled "Misc."

When I find myself creating "Misc Misc" sub-folders, I sense it's time to do some digital housecleaning. :D

mmm... My folders for miscellaneous stuff are called "stuff" and "stuff1".:D

interesting, the stuff folder is where i book marked things ive bought/incoming on my browser bar. right next to that is the WANT folder :D

I remember file folders. I have not replaced my laptop yet and am very limited to what I can do. I can't download pictures from my camera to post new pictures and that frustrates me the most. I might be able to but I really don't know how. Anyway I found one I wanted to order but was stopped by my wife who said "Christmas is almost hear so just wait to see what Santa brings."

That's a great video thanks for posting that. It reminds me of a few photos I took recently. A few weeks ago I went to the Sheffield Beer Festival which was held within the grounds of Sheffield's Kelham Island Industrial Museum, which you'll of seen in various posts by Mr Black.
In the foyer of the museum proper was a display case detailing a celebration of a variety of Sheffield trades which during my visit just so happened to be knives. I thought I'd share them with you all.

Which day were you there Donn? I was there on the Thursday before the beer festival began, visiting Stan Shaw. That display has been there a while now, 'Sheffield Collectable Knives' is something the Eggington Group are doing, they have a separate web site for it. Hope you had a good visit

Thanks for the videos my friend, and sorry I have not replied before, my internet speed has been slow and I couldn't view them until now. The knife Stan is showing is his Hallamshire Knife. He recently made one for one of his granddaughter's 18th birthday, and I was lucky enough to be able to see and handle it several times, and at various stages of Stan making it. By coincidence, I have just spoken to Stan on the phone, and am taking him for lunch tomorrow (before I go to the dentist :( ) :) When I see videos like this, I kind of regret not taking some myself, or at least taking more photographs, but the camera kind of gets in the way, and I am perhaps better leaving it to others who have better skills

I'd like to just say that this past week or so on The Porch has been truly special. We've seen several threads full of member's generosity, and we've had even more new threads providing fascinating history, information, and (of course) lovely pictures that I have just consumed as quickly and thoroughly as possible. The current discussion in the Lambsfoot thread, the Case history thread, the Steel discussion, and several others have made this past week incredibly wonderful for me. Kudos to you all, and thank you all for making this place my Happy Place.

Shawn this is a special place this. This may sound a little crazy but I feel like the folks that end up on the porch are drawn here rather than just happened upon it scouring the internet. Also for all those people that stereotype knife enthusiast as second rate citizens that are dangerous thugs are proven totally wrong by the kind and generous folks here on the porch.

I started lurking around on Blade Forums almost 3 years ago and joined a year and a half ago. At first I stayed in the general discussion area and wondered over to the porch and it was a different world. Folks were very friendly and welcoming and made me feel as I belonged here. Since I have been on the porch I have made a lot of friends, learned a lot about knives and spent a ton of money.

The credit for the "porch environment" goes to Gus and Elliott (Bastid & Blues). They founded the Traditional Forum over 10 years ago. From the get-go they insisted that posters mind their manners and remain friendly. It was their insistence on folks being polite that created this place. When folks are polite to one another, they often end up being friendly, and then becoming friends. Once the environment was created, new folks picked up on it. But it was Gus and Elliott who created this place.

Well said Shawn. And you've absolutely done your part in making it a happy place for others. ;):D

Cheers to Gus and Elliot. I, for one, am truly enjoying this forum. It really does feel like I'm sitting around with a group of old friends. Even though I am new to this forum, this is how I feel. Thank you!
