"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

The next couple of days will be both hectic and wonderful for me as we celebrate Christmas with our family. I most likely won't have a chance to post here again until Monday. So I would like to say to all my friends here on the porch a heartfelt Merry Christmas At my age it seems that time between one year to the next is getting shorter. But all you wonderful folks here have made my year much better and I thank you for it.

A MERRY CHRISTMAS to you as well Randy, sorry I missed this post earlier. So HAPPY your wife is doing better. You have a WONDERFUL family and FAMILY is the most important thing to me:thumbup:

MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY HANUKKAH Everyone:thumbup:

I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday surrounded by loving family, and lots of cutlery!

I hate thieves. This Christmas season had hitherto been a wonderful one, relaxing and spending time with family. No knives, but I didn't really want any. I did have something incredible I've been looking forward to. Our good friend NirreBosse had carved me a kåsa, after I had mentioned that I was looking for one. In case you don't know what that is, it's basically the Finnish kuksa's Swedish cousin. He mailed it to me a couple of weeks ago, but as this is the post office's busiest season, it didn't arrive until earlier this afternoon. I was initially very excited when I opened my mailbox and saw the padded envelope with the customs declaration. Excitement quickly gave way to disappointment when I pulled the envelope out and it was empty. The envelope had been opened prior to my receipt of it. Somewhere between Sweden and my home, a sticky fingered individual with an eye for quality took my kåsa.

It would have to be the irreplaceable package that was stolen. I'm still in shock. This was no mass-produced, soulless consumer good. This cup was special, painstakingly hand made by a friend on the other side of the planet. I'm going to the P.O. to file a complaint tomorrow, but I don't see anything good coming from it.

Thanks for letting me vent.

Christian, petty theft like that is a major offence, nasty spiteful and meaningless. Malice in fact. Having worked part-time in a Post Office, I know that postal workers have a particular abhorrence for people who thieve from the mail, it's an offence against them too. I think you must report this to the P.O. it's kind of odd they would deliver a packet that's obviously been opened and is empty though. Was the envelope damaged, like a machine may have ripped it open?

Regards, Will

Christian- I know your pain and I am gutted for you.
I hope karma does work - that's all I can say that can be said here.

kamagong, that's WAY less than ideal! So sorry to hear that you're the victim of something like that. I worry about theft once a package reaches my front steps, but never thought too much about how many chances there are for goods to "go missing" in transit.

It might have been snatched from the mailbox. You'd think there might be procedures for something as wrong as an empty package at Customs.

Very sorry to hear about this Christian, particularly with you having lost something so special. I send a lot of international parcels, and it's always a worry. Only actually happened twice thankfully, once where a package I sent Charlie was 'damaged in the post', with the contents, or most of them (I forget), going missing, and with a package sent to R.c.s. here in the UK, which was 'lost in the post'. In both cases, there was no redress I'm afraid :(

When I worked for Canada Post (quite a while ago), we treated insured mail like the crown jewels. If I want it to get there for sure I insure it, and I send literally hundreds of parcels by mail every year.

I think they have lost one out of well over a thousand.

They hate paying out on the insurance!

I once insured an item that I was returning because it did not work as advertised. The company did not want to refund my money and said that they did not receive it. When I went to claim my insurance from the Post Office, they said "Oh yes they did - here is the signature to prove it." The company had to pay up, of call Canada Post a liar, which usually does not end well.

About 15 years ago there was an insertion program in various administrations, including PO, and parcels started to arrive erraticly, when they arrived, newspapers were opened to be read, record parcels checked for some rap (I always received my R&R CDs - just an opened box :)-) aso...
The problem stopped as soon as the program was ditched.
Now there's a crawling privatization of PO and some parcels are delivered by private ventures but it seems that some children of the forgotten insertion programme are working in them.
I posted a parcel to Finland on dec. 16, had a curious "routing error", before reaching Finland 11 days later (but still not delivered).
Now I may have made a mistake when writing the address, wait and see, this may also be linked to the content of the parcel...

Another problem we have recently is people using small children's arms and hands to steal small parcels in the letter boxes.

My best wishes to all for a happy and healthy 2017!

Hip Hip Hurrah!

My wish for all is health, happiness, and peace. Happiness, peace, and health. Peace, health, and happiness.

I remember that ripped package well! It looked like a pair of rollers had "squeezed" a knife or two out of the end of the package, like toothpaste out of a tube!
May we all take reliable deliveries in the coming year, in good health and happpiness!

Wishing a Happy New year to you and your families! May it be a peaceful and prosperous year for all.
