"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Hi folks,
after a long (for me) absence, I finally manage to get back to the Porch. I missed this place quite alot. I've been very busy lately with lots of things (work, decisions to make and so on) but I'm fine and I love my traditional knives just like I always did. I hope everyone here is having a nice holiday season, and that this 2017 brings you joy, surprises (good ones of course), new paths to walk, and the same passion and virtues that you all share here.
Happy 2017 folks!

Fausto

Hey there Fausto
I'm glad you are going well and hope that you have managed to have some spare time to have a wee break.

Welcome back my friend.

I want to save somebody's corgi from a fate worse than death and be made a Knight Bachelor. Gules a sword or pendant belted sheathed and/or whatever. And I think there are spurs too.

It's great there's enough humanity in high places that Stan gets an MBE though.

Ben tornato Fausto!
We don't talk much, but I always enjoy your take on knifely things!!

The correct form address for those awarded the honour of MBE is Mr, Mrs ,Sir or Madam.
the MBEs and OBEs have no title.
Well done Stan.I reckon he should have been Knighted. Especially considering some of the cretins that do get that honour and for what? (not all).

I myself feel that I am worthy of the OBE and the title of Earl -then i could be a Earl OBE.:p

I've just had a nice phone-call from Stan Shaw. Stan not only celebrated his 90th birthday in December, but he was awarded a prestigious MBE (Member of the British Empire) in the Queen's New Year Honours List. Stan must be one of the most down-to-earth gentlemen ever to be awarded the medal, but he certainly deserves it in my book. Stan is chuffed, and what a great end to his 90th year :)

I was hoping to meet him for lunch tomorrow as I am in Sheffield anyway, and had been intending to phone him tonight, but it sounds like his first day back at work after his Christmas break is going to be a busy one, with the press and paparazzi dropping in on him! :)

Congratulations Stan Shaw MBE :) :) :)

Jack mate.
I missed this earlier- What a WONDERFUL read!

You must show Stan this thread- and send him both Sue and my congratulations! We are both so so rapt for Stan.
A prestigious honour for such a wonderful man.

Quick question for those who work leather - I'm going to dabble with a new hobby - what sort of glue would you use to prep prior to stitching?

Contact cement is what they call it here. Use it sparingly. Shoe repairers use it. It remains flexible when cured. Have fun!!

Good to see you Fausto, Happy New Year :)

I dare say Stan's gong will put a few noses out of joint at the Cut-throats Hall! ;)

currently I use DAP brand contact cement.
it comes with a brush in the bottle - coat both pieces of leather, wait a few minutes until it's no longer wet but still tacky to the touch, then press the sides together firmly. (if you have a heavy rubber mallet, you can use that to "hammer" the edge to make sure you have a good seal.)
prior to gluing, only punch holes in one piece of leather - after gluing, use those holes as a guide to punch through the second layer. otherwise, you'll never get the holes to line up properly.

Hey guys, just letting you know, I'm installing a new computer this weekend, so if you don't hear from me for a while, it's because I'm really not good at this whole hooking up the computer thing. :D So many wires & cables back there...

Good bye, good old XP :(

I got a new laptop from my wife for Christmas and I'm off the Kindle YEA!!!

I'm going to load my camera software tomorrow and post pictures and give kudos to some friends that sent me some great knives for Christmas. It started with a package from Jack (Mrknife) he sent me a Tidioute #15 he modified from a one arm razor to a clip point, a S&M large saddlehorn and a solid silver guitar pick he made for me. Then I received from Shawn (Wurrwulf) a NOS Boker 493 Barlow still in the blister pack. And last but definitely not the least Bob (Bigbiscuit) sent me a Tom's Choice Tidioute #15 single blade clip point Barlow. These are some great friends and they sure made my Christmas special. Thanks guy's I will post pictures tomorrow.

Good luck, r8shell! I recently built a new PC for living room use, and it was waaaay more nerve-racking than I remember it being back when I was in high school!

Sounds like a special Christmas, Randy! I can't wait to see the pictures of Jack's modified 15 and guitar pick!

when you first turn it on, make sure it's not plugged into a network, your wireless router is turned off, etc...
otherwise it will try 7 ways from Sunday to get you to create a windows account that ties it to all the MS based social media.
once you have it up and running, go into the settings folder and turn off all the automatic sharing/notifications stuff you can.
then turn on your internet and watch it update and reboot for an hour and a half.

Thanks, I think I understand. I don't want all my personal documents floating around on the cloud.
Maybe I'm just old and set in my ways, but it seems like half the ads on TV are telling me to do my banking, insurance claims, etc. on my cell phone, and half the news stories are about fraud, identity theft, and hacking.

Wires? Not to worry.
All the USB plugs can be inserted into any USB jack. They don't care which one goes where.
The monitor has its own plug which is a different shape from any of the others.
These days the jack for your speakers is usually green and it is also marked.
And the line to your router or cable modem has its own unique plug as well.
And of course the power cord has its own plug which is unlike any of the others.

external cable line goes to cable modem.
If you don't use a router, then then output of the cable modem goes to the computer via an Ethernet cable.
if you use a router, then the output of the cable modem goes to the router. And you connect your computer to the router with an ethernet cable.

My first computer was a slide rule. If I can do it, you can, too.

Wood glue or Elmers glue. Water salable and cleans up easy and won't effect your dyes.
