"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Thanks, Gary, same to ya, and to all the mods for your efforts at making this a great place to hang out.

I'll add my voice to the chorus wishing everyone a safe and blessed New Year! I hope 2017 turns out to be even better than you dream it might be!

Happy New Year to all the friends I've made here. I'm looking forward to many years to come, spending time with you on the Porch!

I'm Canadian and live in Canada. I still - sad to say - US Mail is faster and more reliable than Canada Post.
I do think though I will insure next time its a big ticket item.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL.

MR CHIPS - QUOTE

When I worked for Canada Post (quite a while ago), we treated insured mail like the crown jewels. If I want it to get there for sure I insure it, and I send literally hundreds of parcels by mail every year.

I think they have lost one out of well over a thousand.

They hate paying out on the insurance!

I once insured an item that I was returning because it did not work as advertised. The company did not want to refund my money and said that they did not receive it. When I went to claim my insurance from the Post Office, they said "Oh yes they did - here is the signature to prove it." The company had to pay up, of call Canada Post a liar, which usually does not end well.

Just had a friend round with his three kids, aged 7 and under. I gave them presents (Jack London stories, train-set, compendium of playground games), and then they just went completely crazy! Last day of the holidays here  My mate looked completely exhausted! :D They were only here 30 minutes, and I'm feeling pretty worn out myself! :D

I took one last vacation day and my wife and I went to the zoo. I don't usually take photo's at the zoo, because the pros do it better. But this fella struck my fancy...

Back to work tomorrow.

Kool Flamingo  I wouldn't mind being able to stand on one leg all day, certainly beats going to work!:D:D:D:eek::cool:

Being nearly 56, I was quite surprised to receive this toy crossbow from a friend for Xmas! :D He picked it up at the Kelham Island Industrial Museum Victorian Christmas Fair. I'll probably give it to the kids of another friend (see my post above), so that they can terrorize him with it! ;) :D I did think it was quite cleverly made though - some bits of wood, two screws, two rubber bands, a few drawing pins, a clothes-peg, and some ping-pong balls - and thought that some of the parents/grandparents here might think it was a simple and interesting project. It does work pretty well! :D

That's very cool. I'm 59, and I got a little plastic-and-steel crossbow for Christmas that allegedly flings cotton swabs. We'll never know, because it broke while I was trying to assemble it.

Thanks guys  That's a shame about your crossbow Jer :(

I've just had a nice phone-call from Stan Shaw. Stan not only celebrated his 90th birthday in December, but he was awarded a prestigious MBE (Member of the British Empire) in the Queen's New Year Honours List. Stan must be one of the most down-to-earth gentlemen ever to be awarded the medal, but he certainly deserves it in my book. Stan is chuffed, and what a great end to his 90th year :)

I was hoping to meet him for lunch tomorrow as I am in Sheffield anyway, and had been intending to phone him tonight, but it sounds like his first day back at work after his Christmas break is going to be a busy one, with the press and paparazzi dropping in on him! :)

Congratulations Stan Shaw MBE :) :) :)

Very cool to get toy cross bows guy's but I'm sorry yours broke Screen. I'm ---well Let's just say older than you two guys :D:eek: anyway I have a RC helicopter my son gave me a few years ago that I love and play with it a lot. So I guess there's something to that old saying "the only difference between men and boys is the price of their toys." :D

LOL! I've had a few crossbows in the past Randy, but they didn't fire ping-pong balls! :D

That's so cool, Jack. Thanks for passing along good news.
Are we to call him "Sir Stan" now?
