"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I know some of you folks are into flashlights as well as knives. I find myself needing a decent small flashlight. My current go to flashlight is a monster of a maglight that has just gotten to big and heavy for my old hands. Any suggestions for a good flashlight around $25?

Randy: For what it's worth, I have Fenix lights up to $90.00 which I deploy on my boat. They are rechargeable via USB/12 Volt. As long as it has been available, I need that kind of functionality on the boat for safety. I also have a Fenix that uses AA batteries but it's about $50.00.

I bought a couple "Surefire" LED flashlights with rechargeable batteries and a charger. It uses 18650 batteries which are readily available. I think I paid less than $20 for the whole shooting match! I use this as a house flashlight and recharge about once every 6 months. I just keeps working. Amazon. Give it a shot.

Great photo, and hilarious caption, Todd! :D:thumbup::D
That pup is growing fast!
How big will he get??

English Shepherds are supposed to be somewhere between 50-70lbs. His father was a big boy on the upper end of that scale. He's only twelve weeks this Thursday, but my vet says she should be able to see how he might turn out when he reaches 16 weeks. We'll see. He is getting bigger though... and heavier... and stronger... and smarter...

Thanks for the info, Todd; he's gonna be a big guy!
(I think it's cool that you named your dog after a knife; I'll bet you have a knife named Old Yeller, too! :D:D)

I have found as a reasonable rule of thumb - when a pup hits the 5 month mark, weigh it and double that -- you should be within 5 pounds of adult weight.

So, what counts as "small" for you?
My go-to flashlight for most purposes is "the indestructible flashlight" made by Rayovac. requires two AA batteries. Available in big box hardware stores and online. LED. Has a low and a high setting, 70 lumens and 300 lumens. Robustly made. The walls of the flashlight are over 1/8" thick and it has rubber caps on the base and around the lens. Throws a good white light. Costs about $15. Fills the hand without being overly large and heavy. I have one in each car, one in the kitchen, and have have given one to my son, my daughter, and to a few friends. Everyone I've given them to absolutely loves them.

I've used this one daily for over five years without fail. 2 AA, LED. As you can see, it hasn't been babied (it even makes a decent light use hammer). $29.99 at Walmart. Don't forget One Stop knife shop sells flashlights too.

Thank you, Frank. Computers make life easier and so much more complicated.

I see that my new computer came with something called Outlook 2016, but I'm not sure if it's something I can use just for email. I'll experiment with different options this week. :)

That should be the same as a purchased version of Outlook, but be careful that it's not just a 30 day trial version.

So, I used to just view new posts in all areas. The last couple weeks, I've only looked here. Today I went and looked at all again. I realized that I was missing nothing.

Does anyone else misplace things? I seem to misplace stuff all the time but at some point these things will show back up. Right now I have an Ebony single blade #14 missing as well as a chestnut jigged bone Back Pocket. Along with these the remote for the TV (not the cable box) and the remote for the fireplace. It seems to be never ending in our home and it's not just me My wife has been on a 2 week rampage for some diamond earrings she can't find. And then I always hear "you know the one's I'm talking about" but the truth is I have no idea what ones she is talking about because I have no idea what any of her jewelry looks like even though I most likely purchased it. When these things show back up it will be something else's turn to fall in the black hole of missing things. My wife's answer to this enigma is (you need to stay out of my things or what did you do with my fill in the blank). It never occurs to her that she may have mislaid them.
Ann and I were married 33 years ago and were the Brady Bunch. We had both been married before and both had total custody our our children Ann had a son and a daughter, I had a son and two daughters. So for years we had the kids to blame for missing things but these days it's just up to me to take the blame of all things missing. :D

Randy, I know exactly what you mean. My problem is when I have something I want to keep safe, I put it somewhere saying to myself "it will be safe here". Problem is a few months down the road when I'm looking for it, I can't remember where the "safe place" I put it is. Usually, lost items eventually make it into the kitchen junk drawer. That's where I found my Waterman fountain pen - mixed in with the kids school pens. :S

Randy, Karen and I go through the same thing. I think it comes with age, and getting a little absent minded. I got so worried over the possibility that I was "loosing it," that I talked tony doctor at the V.A. about tit. After a battery of testing, she informed me that I was average for my age group. A bit of a relief, but still questing the age group thing.

The doc explained to me that we are living a far more complex life than our parents and grandparents. It's like a conveyor belt that gets more and more stuff on it as it goes around. When it gets really loaded, some stuff falls off it before it comes back around to you. It's called information over load. The brain can only deal with so much, and that gets a bit less with age, so if we keep cramming more stuff in, the brain will start to subconsciously blot out some data to make room for other data. Like the tax payment on the house is more important than where the spare car keys are, so there you are wondering where the heck you put the keys.

Age ain't for the faint of heart!

Thanks for the support, folks. Gary and I appreciate it. I won't go into details. You know who you are.

Randy,

I admire you being in custody of your kids. So many men leave them.

I, too, had sole custody of my daughter. Still do but now I'm married again to a great woman who treats her like her own. We also have a basketball team. Yours, mine and ours (soon). Good on ya, my friend.

As far as misplacing things, yep. And I'm young. Lol.

Also walking into a room and can't remember what you're looking for? I think about the here-after often. "What the heck am I here after?"

Our house isn't too bad with misplacing things. My wife loses stuff, but I can usually find it within a few minutes. However, the garage is an Abyss, and I'm pretty sure 3/4 of everything I own is missing in there. I'll go in there looking for something, and within moments I can't even remember why I went in there, and then I'll walk out with something that I needed 2 months ago.

"Honey, look what I found, the jumper cables that we needed. And when we couldn't find them, and we bought a new set. By the way, where is the new set we bought?"

Er....ALL the time Randy, and increasingly! About the only thing I don't seem to misplace is knives...well as far as I can remember!

I am 36 and things go missing all the dang time. Sometimes I feel like I must be on some game show completely for the amusement of others :D
