"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

On Friday a nice lady called our shop (50 years in business as an import shop) asking if we would do a pre purchase inspection on an MGB for her. I asked her some questions and quickly realized she had no idea what she was getting into. She thought she'd be able to just hop into that car and head out whenever and wherever she wanted to. I probably busted her bubble but did her a huge favor by recommending she buy a Miata instead, same (if not better) driving experience, with unbeatable reliability. What great cars!
I wonder if I'll hear back from her?

Quite a "wake-up call", Randy! I don't envy you at all, but the forecast is that I'll see the same sight out my back door Monday morning. :( I'm more than ready for some of those 60s and 70s you mentioned!

Same here Randy. Now they are predicting 12-18" of snow for Tuesday here in my area.:mad:

Sorry to hear of your approaching bad weather guy's. Bob you guy's have had a mess all winter not sure about your winter Gary. I know when I was a kid I couldn't get enough snow but these day's it's nice around Thanksgiving and Christmas but other than that I would rather not have any,

It's not over yet fellas! that snow is still coming. We thought the storm on friday wouldve slowed the clinic down but turns out no. This bigger storm on the horizon might do it tho. Stay safe and warm all of you in the dangerzones! old man winter is not done yet :(

Yeah, when I was a child, we lived in Pennsylvania. I loved snow, but when you're a kid, snow means a "snow day" from school. I never had to shovel the car and driveway and go to work. Here in Austin, half an inch will shut down the city.

Not to rub it in, but I planted my tomatoes, peppers and eggplants this weekend. :)

Austin gets snow???!!

I may have to move further south! Now having completed my second winter in Georgetown, and not having seen a single snow flake, I've been very happy. Don't miss the cold either, and I fear that I'm getting spoiled here. When it's not a sunny day and at least 70 degrees, I start getting hincky. Like today, where's the blasted sun????
:D

As of a week ago we had the most snow of any city over 100,000 in the US at 71.6". But, we average 106.3". It hasn't been a particularly bad winter. The winter weather started early here so it just seems like a long winter.

My family and friends were all down hill skiers when I was growing up. The more snow the better! We skied 2 or 3 nights a week at the local municipal slope and weekends we were off to McCauley Mountain in Old Forge, Snowridge in Turin or Whiteface near Lake Placid. Holiday weekends it was Killington or Mt. Snow or one of the other ski areas in Vermont.

Now I just cross country ski, snow shoe or shovel/snow blow it off my driveway.

Anyway, I'm ready for spring!

Amen to that, Im in the city so all the stuff becomes a nightmare. snow as a kid meant snow day from school but as an adult it means either shoveling or a mess that affects travel to work for the next week or so. No skiing or any fun stuff like that sadly. plus it just piles up here since theres no where to push it. On the positive note, i guess they will be cancelling alternate side parking

Sure, we get snow. Every five years or so, sometimes as much as an inch! Sometimes we get a little ice, too. Don't worry, it melts within a day. Just don't try to drive on it. No one knows how to deal with it, and they go slip sliding all over the road. At least I admit that I don't know how to drive on ice. That makes me a better driver than the folks who think they can.

I have similar feelings about my Convertible Tank, an '06 Wrangler-- a (predominantly impractical) delight, especially once the top and doors come off....]

C'mon, Spring.

Now that's my kind of convertible. Actually, no convertible is my kind of convertible, as I go straight from pale to sunburnt with no stops in between. I drove my '07 Wrangler for a few years and loved driving around with the doors and windows off while still benefiting from the shade of the top. :D

(Sorry for the old, low-quality, pre-smart-phone cell phone pic.)

I traded it in shortly after we moved to Arizona. Unlike most climates, it was actually perfect for winter here, but the black soft top wasn't much fun when it got up to 115°+ in the summer. I do miss it though. :(

I really feel for those of y'all who are still getting snow. We had to turn the air conditioner on this past week because it's been hitting 90°.

Nice selection RR. I too am very fond of the Barlow, esp. with 2 blades.

We were having a blether and he mentioned that in his younger days he was a fisherman by trade, which I didn't know, and that in the Western Isles a knife the like of which he carries is known by the fishermen as a 'gut n mend'. As in; for gutting the fish and mending the nets. Useful to know, I would be totally flummoxed had someone previously said to me "here Paul, can I borrow your gut n mend
Gut and Mend, great nick name! Can't wait to try it out on my brother when we're walleye fishing next month:thumbup:

I want a hamburger sub so bad, but I want to through hike the AT more.
I have watched my wife struggle with her weight for years. She's had good luck for several years with the low carb diet. Good luck on your goal!

My dad turned around once to see me holding the end of a 6' tape measure, spinning around in circles as fast as I could to see how far I could make the tape extend in midair. By the time he got to me, I already had it out past the end of the spring. It ended up in the trash can. It's really a wonder my dad never killed me
That's a hoot! Funny you mention it. I was clearing out some stuff the other day and found an old coiled charging cord for the car. I just started twirling it, heavy end outward. That thing was singing. Hadn't done anything like that in years.

We had a respite a week or so ago. Now it's 10 degrees. south of Syracuse.
Yup, same here. Getting in some late season skiing today. Nothing nice with me today, just a cheap flipper I 100% wouldn't feel bad about losing. Guess Frost Cutlery knives are good for something!;)

Now that is a love story, in so many ways!

I love the story, and the car, and the part where all this (evidently) happened in Wisconsin!

Nothing says "Mazda Miata" quite like Wisconsin. :D

Yes, right smack dab in the middle of Wisconsin. She sure stands out at the Hub City car show. Jeeps are at least a little more practical than my roadster!:D

Your an honest man! Could have let her buy it and have yourself a steady income stream.;)

Gary, I too am sensitive to too much caffeine. I got the idea of an espresso machine after reading an article about medically managed caffeine in professional sports. The idea is to titrate to need. And, espresso has less caffeine than regular coffee. With my 2-3 espressos or cappuccinos (never a latte) daily missing it is not a problem.

Folks, there is no requirement in this thread to post about knives, but if you do, please make them traditional knives.

Roger that. Offending picture removed. Thanks for the reminder Frank.

I went to school in Binghamton, and it seemed like EVERY SINGLE TIME I drove through Syracuse on the way to visit my family in Rochester, it was raining or snowing. Miserable city...[emoji6]

small world, we got lost driving to Binghamton and ended up deep in to philly almost on the ride back. my father asked if i was still interested in Bing. the answer was no. 5 years in stony brook

Funny what influences, what seems like, such an important decision.

Yeah we're #8 on the list of the "top 10 Cities with the most depressing winters". That's a dubious claim to fame! I guess I have to buy more knives to lift my spirits!

Because P.Bucket is getting more or less useless; I used to think that it's because I'm outside the USA but I know that's not the case; I decided to try Imgur. I'm finding it impossible to resize images though. When I took images from my Macbook to P.Bucket I could crop/resize them and then put them in the Bucket and they would come out acceptable size for the Forum. Now when testing Imgur, the images are huge, what am I dong wrong eh?

Thanks, Will

Not sure, Will. I've switched to Flickr from Photobucket because of how bad it's become. It allows you to choose what size picture you want to share when you select the BBCode.
I can choose thumbnail sized

up to large size and even bigger.

I dread going to Pbucket to post older pics anymore. It is either not working or it loads super slow. I won't even try to edit photos through the website anymore, as it frequently causes my browser to crash. I cringe when I see other people recommend it to folks who are new to posting pics here.

Will, I was having the same troubles on Imgur. I think I've got it figured out. When you log onto your Imgur library, just above the thumbnail pics, click the drop down labeled View Image info. Select Edit images. Then click on the thumbnail images you want to edit, ten again just above the thumbnails click the edit button. They will come up one at a time so you can edit color, brightness, size or whatever you want. overlayed on the image in the top right will be a size edit selection. I've been resizing to 1600 X 1200 for landscape image format and 1200 X 1600 for portrait format. After changing the size, click apply, and then up top click Save. And you're done resizing and it will go to the next image you selected to edit.
