"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Speacial Easter times this year.

It all started the wrong way : while collecting some lily in our small garden I found a set of keys and mirror that clearly had been thrown there by a bag stealer.
Then I had my wallet emptied by a pickpocket (same evil??) while having coffe with friends in a bar.
The forums were closed to me until this morning and the first post I read warned me I am the luckiest of guys, winning an outstanding muslin micarta 13 whittler!
Tout est bien qui finit bien! all's well that ends well!

This place is definitively a special place!!!
:)

Jolipapa: As mentioned, I'm sorry you had such a tough weekend. I'm glad I could bring a little sunshine at the end. :)

I. Hate. Change.

Seriously, I'm sure it will be great once I get used to it, but right now I'm finding the new look hard to read.

Nice to see you, Andi. :)

First off, I have to agree with this^^^^!!!!

I'm old and set in my ways, and really hate changes, But I suppose I will just get used tot the 'new' format.

And it is nice to see Andi is still around!

Commiseration on the wallet and congratulations on the whittler!

You can also highlight text within a given post, hit reply (either a pop-up gray bubble or the standard link), and the software will properly format a response including just the highlighted text.
Thanks Sarah, this one was a new one to me, you have a knack for always teaching something useful :) I couldn't get it to work on the ipad, and don't seem to be seeing auto correct kicking in either.

Not getting alerts on tags yet, I'm guessing that will come along later as Spark keeps tweeking the software. I really like Xenforo, it was a great move. PS, nice to see you :)

Shipping Overseas:

Some folks, I know are hesitant to do this in trading forums etc..

I just wanted to share this information for what it's worth. I just shipped a second knife to France. The first one I sent to the UK. This is just not that big of a deal. I put some details below.
I live in Virginia, outside DC.
I shipped one knife in a bubble envelope that cost $1.29 to the UK. Filled out a customs form, indicated a value of $50 and the item was a slip joint folder, and a gift. This cost me $22.5o for first class mail.

Shipped the second knife the same way in the same bubble envelope to France, same customs form. For some reason, this only cost $13.50 but I do think the clerk made a mistake. It should be $22.50 also.

You can track these until they leave the US airport of departure. This is the downside, there is no way to track shipment after that.

This is not meant to be advice, just information. Obviously, if you're selling a somewhat expensive knife, you could be taking some risk.

Being a U.K. Resident who tends to buy a lot of US sold cutlery, I appreciate someone who is willing to do that; I have lost out a few times on the exchange due to geography.

I have had kind people living in the US act as a proxy in the past, which worked fine but I always felt a bit of worry that if something were to go wrong there might be some element of guilt or blame. So on the advice and recommendation of a fellow forumite, I now use comgateway as a US address, storage and shipping facility and don't even bother asking for shipping to the UK unless the seller has already stated that they'll do it in the OP. It costs more due to the charges and the FedEx or DHL fees plus the customs fees. But for a prized and possibly rare GEC 25 - I'm happy to pay a little more.

Starting to get the hang of it now. I'm not fond of change but if it means less crashes/blackouts dot-def stuff then good.

Rather poor selection of emoticons though, no BARF symbol?? Hmmmhh.

Like that you have 3 viewing options, didn't fancy the default one too much but now I connect to the others well.

About pictures. If you don't have to use P.Bucket or the like how do you do it? Go to your i-photo library on Mac or equivalent? Confused... what do you need to copy?

Might it be possible to reduce the No. of stickies on this Forum by say amalgamating a couple of them? There seem to be an awful lot of them.

Thinking of Bob, he's such a brave man and amusing.

... And here's our ray of sunshine, right on time. :D

Cheers, Jack! I've been thinking of you often, in light of the forum change and other knifely matters.

Hopefully, we'll catch up, or learn to stumble forward together again, soon enough. :)

LOL! :D You too P

I dare say, I'll catch up eventually, but so far I'm absolutely HATING the changes - :barf: as they used to say! What ARE these darn things?!

(Seems  doesn't even work!) Clunky as it comes, and looks REAL ugly. If I wandered across this site for the first time, and saw how it looks, I don't think I'd be back (oops, we're missing another icon)!

Thanks for adding that pmew. I know it must be frustrating sometimes? As I said, there could be a risk of uninsured loss and maybe a proxy is a better idea if you do a lot.

Jack, my friend. You'll get used to ito_O It's not ugly on my Mac? Looks pretty much like the old form, a lot more white space.
One thing I did notice right away. It is very much faster. < That's good, isn't it ?

It's ugly to be sure and this is the best format that exists so far...I tried them all. i hate that you can't see who's on the sub forum/ page /thread. Makes you feel alone! It must be fixed. It is faster and I'm adapting but....

Thanks my friend! I hope to participate more often heren than I did in last one and a half year.

Good news

And the dumcons don't work for me unless I type in the code manually! :(

Weird! I posted @ 5 minutes ago, then again a couple of minutes later, but my second post REPLACED my first post!
